  • Arc B580 vs. RTX 4060: Power Consumption and Performance Review

Arc B580 vs. RTX 4060: Power Consumption and Performance Review

After a long wait, reviews for the Intel Arc B580 have finally arrived, and it looks like the new Battlemage desktop graphics card is a solid choice for those on a budget. On average, this GPU outperforms both the RTX 4060 and RX 7600 by a nice margin. Moreover, Intel has improved its ray tracing capabilities, with the Arc B580 reportedly being faster than the RTX 4060 at 1080p; the performance gap widens to an impressive 28% at 1440p, as noted by TechPowerUp.

    Power Consumption Insights

Now, let’s discuss the power usage of the Arc B580. Has Intel achieved significant improvements here as well?

The answer is yes! Intel has made some advancements compared to the previous generation Arc Alchemist cards, with the Arc B580 consuming less power than the Arc A580. However, it still can’t quite compete with the RTX 4060 in terms of efficiency.

Digital Foundry reports that in A Plague Tale Requiem, the Arc B580 performs better than the RTX 4060 but uses notably more power. The RTX 4060 is the most efficient card in this scenario, drawing between 120 to 130 W. In contrast, the Arc B580 pulls the most power in this test, ranging from 160 to over 170 W.

    Performance vs. Power

The Arc B580 also beats the RTX 4060 in Cyberpunk 2077 (non-ray tracing), but this comes at a higher power cost. While the RTX 4060 uses only 120-130 W, the Arc B580 varies from 150 to 170 W. In Alan Wake 2, the Arc B580 again consumes more power compared to the RTX 4060 without delivering any extra performance.

Linus Tech Tips also examined the Arc B580 and reached similar conclusions. The card has a Total Board Power (TBP) of 190 W, while the RTX 4060 sits at 116 W. It’s no shock that during F1 23, the Arc B580 appears to use about 186 W compared to the RTX 4060’s 129 W, marking a difference of a significant 44%.

    Final Thoughts

Intel has definitely improved the power consumption with the Arc B580 compared to the Arc A580. LTT shows that the Arc A580 uses 206 W, which is 11% more than the Arc B580.

In short, the Arc B580 Battlemage GPU is a commendable release from Intel with solid performance and impressive ray tracing features. Nevertheless, Intel still needs to work on matching the power efficiency of Nvidia’s products. Therefore, if power consumption isn’t a concern for you and you’re after a budget-friendly GPU with more than 8 GB of RAM, the Arc B580 is definitely worth considering.

  • Borderlands 4 Gameplay Trailer Launch: Mixed Reactions Unveiled

Borderlands 4 Gameplay Trailer Launch: Mixed Reactions Unveiled

After the varied responses to Borderlands 3, the expectations for Borderlands 4 are exceptionally high for the team at Gearbox Software and its publisher, 2K Games. Many fans felt disappointed with the last installment due to its weak storyline and uninspired character designs, leading to a Metacritic user score of 5.5. This rating is notably low for the series, especially when compared to Borderlands 2, which enjoyed a much better reception with a user score of 8.2.

    Improving on Previous Mistakes

Borderlands 4 was officially announced in August during gamescom 2024, with the goal of correcting earlier issues. The developers have promised a more engaging narrative that draws inspiration from the cherished Borderlands 2 and a redesigned character aesthetic aimed at making the Vault Hunters feel unique and unforgettable again. New gameplay mechanics, such as the laser lasso, are intended to enhance combat, making it more dynamic and varied. Fans can catch a sneak peek of these features in the recently released trailer, which provides a first look at actual gameplay.

    Trailer Highlights

The trailer kicks off with a cinematic scene showcasing a battle between two groups: the recognizable psycho mask-wearers and a futuristic faction. At 1:06, it shifts to gameplay footage, sometimes shown from a first-person view, hinting at four characters available to play. A standout moment for many is the return of Zane Flynt from Borderlands 3. Now older and with a beard, his character brings a sense of nostalgia to the mix.

The exciting shooter action is on display, along with a brief appearance by Claptrap, the robot who divides opinions among players. The trailer also introduces the laser lasso, featuring grappling hook elements. While no exact release date is given, the tagline “coming soon” and the mention of “2025” at the end offer a vague timeline. Fans can already place the game on their Steam wish lists.

    Community Feedback

Reactions from the community have been mixed across platforms like YouTube and Reddit. Many fans have expressed appreciation for the more serious tone that harkens back to the glory days of Borderlands 2. The lesser focus on slapstick humor has been positively received by a sizable portion of the audience. The new villain displayed in the trailer, who radiates a dark and intimidating vibe, has also gained favorable reactions. Fans have longed for an antagonist to match the legendary Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2.

On the flip side, a number of players feel that the design of the Vault Hunters lacks distinctiveness and seems too standard. Some fans have also voiced their concerns about the diminished focus on the signature cel-shading art style that has been a hallmark of the series. Additionally, there are worries about the potential similarities to Borderlands 3, raising fears that Borderlands 4 might repeat its predecessor’s mistakes by failing to innovate enough.

  • Is This the Actual Nintendo Switch 2? Dbrand Confirms It

Is This the Actual Nintendo Switch 2? Dbrand Confirms It

Dbrand, a brand recognized for its bold designs and playful marketing, may have accidentally revealed what Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console will look like. The company has introduced a new accessory called the “Killswitch 2,” crafted specifically for this next-generation Nintendo device.

Design Insights on the Switch 2

The case showcases a bigger console with a unique style, including an extra button on the right Joy-Con and an enhanced kickstand. It seems that the Joy-Cons are now magnetically connected and can be removed by pressing a button located on the back.

Another interesting feature is a new USB-C port situated on the top of the console. This clever placement might enhance connectivity and make charging easier, tackling a usual complaint from users of the existing model.

    Confirmation from Dbrand’s CEO

Adam Ijaz, the CEO of Dbrand, has assured that the design is genuine, as it’s derived from a 3D scan of the real hardware. Although details such as the type of screen (whether it be LCD or OLED) and the exact release date are still unclear, Ijaz hints at a launch for the case in late March or early April, which could also suggest when the Switch 2 might hit the market.

This leak supports earlier rumors and a design mockup shared by SwitchUp, adding more weight to the design’s credibility. The Switch 2 is anticipated to have backward compatibility with existing Switch games and will likely continue the Nintendo Switch Online service.

    Hardware Improvements and Expectations

Speculation indicates that the console will feature an 8-inch OLED screen, a major upgrade compared to the original 6.2-inch LCD. There are also rumors of it having 12GB of RAM, tripling the memory of the original Switch, along with a new CPU/GPU that can provide 1080p resolution at 60fps when docked.

  • Nintendo Switch Pro Kit Enhances Handheld to Home Console Performance

Nintendo Switch Pro Kit Enhances Handheld to Home Console Performance

Over a year has gone by since we last talked about the Re-shell kit for Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED. To summarize, this kit was meant to turn either console into a home gaming system. While it might seem a bit odd at first, the Re-shell kit could really help breathe new life into a Switch that had a broken screen. Additionally, the kit’s better cooling features helped to tap into the Switch’s overclocking capabilities.

    Popularity and Drawbacks

Despite the popularity of the Re-shell kit in the Switch modding community, it had its flaws. For one, the kit didn’t provide access to external MicroSD and USB Type-A ports. Plus, it couldn’t stop a Switch or Switch OLED from leaving its fan on when plugged into power. Thankfully, Macho Nacho Productions reports that the developer SetEngineering has fixed these problems with the new Switch NXii kit, which they’ve nicknamed the ‘Switch Pro shell mod.’

    New Features and Compatibility

It’s important to note that this fresh kit only works with V1 and V2 consoles. In response to feedback from users, SetEngineering has added a fan control PCB and an SD card breakout board. This means that the Switch NXii can now turn off the fan when the console is in sleep mode or completely powered down. Additionally, users can now easily access the MicroSD card reader and USB Type-A ports located on the left side of the kit.

    Enhanced Performance and Pricing

The new kit is also compatible with a Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM 92 mm fan (currently priced at $18.95 on Amazon), in contrast to the 80 mm unbranded fan that came with the Re-shell kit. Because of this, the Switch NXii kit allows for a modded Switch to operate at 50% RAM, 50% GPU, and 125% CPU overclocks without facing any heat issues. In fact, Macho Nacho Productions has shown that their Switch Pro shell mod achieves a temperature drop of 7.5°C on the PCB.

Even better, the Switch NXii kit comes with brass inserts for easier assembly. This means you won’t need to glue or solder anything together. Right now, you can buy the kit on Etsy, either with or without a Noctua fan for $95 and $110, respectively. Additionally, SetEngineering has a vertical stand available for $15, and you can choose from nine different primary and secondary color options. For more details, check out the video by Macho Nacho Productions and SetEngineering’s product listings linked below.

  • Sony PS5 Gets 30% Cooler with New AI Fan Technology

Sony PS5 Gets 30% Cooler with New AI Fan Technology

The SCRY Arctic V2 is an external cooling device that connects to the back of the Sony PlayStation 5, utilizing three small fans along with a heat sink to keep the console cool. According to the manufacturer, the airflow is claimed to be five times stronger, resulting in a reduction of temperatures by "30%," but no specific measurements or detailed data are provided.

    Versatile Design

SCRY can function in both portrait and landscape positions. It features white LED lighting designed to enhance the gaming aesthetic. Unlike its first version, the SCRY now includes AI technology for smarter fan control, which is likely a response to numerous complaints about the loudness of the first model’s fans, which were advertised as nearly silent. However, since the PlayStation 5 operates quite quietly on its own and there aren’t widespread reports of overheating issues with the console, the actual benefits of a product like SCRY may be quite limited.

    Pricing and Funding

Currently, the SCRY Arctic V2 for the original PS5, along with the Arctic S for the PS5 Slim and Arctic Pro for the PS5 Pro, is being funded on Kickstarter. The cooler is available through an "Early Bird" offer for $39, plus shipping and import taxes. At the time of writing, the project has successfully raised about $58,000 from 668 backers.

    Considerations for Backers

Like any Kickstarter campaign, there are risks to consider when supporting such projects. Comments from backers of the first SCRY Kickstarter reveal that some individuals never received their coolers, while others reported the fans were significantly louder than what was advertised. Given the number of negative reviews from previous customers, it is wise to approach this new campaign with some skepticism.

  • Fortnite Ballistic: Fast-Paced Fun with Frustrating Moments

Fortnite Ballistic: Fast-Paced Fun with Frustrating Moments

Fortnite has introduced a new game mode called Ballistic, which is currently in early access. This mode offers a fresh twist on the classic Fortnite gameplay by having two teams of five players compete in a search-and-destroy format. Teams are divided into attackers and defenders, switching roles at the halfway point, and the match is won by the first team to score seven points. Players begin each round with a market system that allows them to buy upgraded weapons and items using credits they earn during the game. With familiar mechanics, it’s easy and enjoyable to pick up, but there are some issues, particularly regarding the experience with teammates.

    Match Duration and Gameplay Dynamics

Matches are typically quick, wrapping up in about 20 minutes, although they can extend if teams play slowly. Initially, players start with only a pistol but soon unlock access to all nine weapons and four consumables, including shields, after the first few rounds. If a player is eliminated in a round, they will lose their purchased weapon but can earn enough credits to buy it back in the next round. Players who are eliminated do not respawn until the following round, adding another layer of strategy to the gameplay.

    Map Design and Tactical Play

At the moment, there is just one map available. Fortunately, the A and B bomb sites are spaced far apart with varied terrain, keeping matches from feeling repetitive. The landscape allows for easy flanking and cross-firing opportunities that benefit both teams, keeping players engaged. This positioning is particularly crucial given the gunplay mechanics and time-to-kill (TTK) dynamics of the Ballistic mode.

When it comes to gunplay, Ballistic mirrors games like Counter-Strike 2 by significantly limiting aiming precision while moving. This feature emphasizes the importance of counter-strafing, peeking, and headshots to effectively lower a player’s TTK. During testing, the average TTK was found to be between one to three seconds, and utilizing the aforementioned tactics can make this time even shorter. Consumables, like flashbangs, are also essential in reducing TTK, and weapon choices play a big role, too. In the current version, the “Nemesis AR” and “Reaper Sniper Rifle” are favored options due to the “Nemesis AR” being easy to control and the “Reaper Sniper Rifle” being capable of taking down an enemy in one hit. Overall, the weapon mechanics felt solid and enjoyable, but teamwork is key to securing victory.

    Team Dynamics and Player Retention

Finding teammates in Ballistic is generally fast, but maintaining a stable team can be challenging. During testing, both teams frequently lost players, resulting in one-sided matches. Occasionally, a replacement may join, but this often happens only after a significant number of points have already been scored. Unfortunately, many matches faced this issue, diminishing the overall experience. It’s hoped that as the Ballistic mode develops, Fortnite developers will introduce features to encourage players to remain in games. Until that happens, casual matchmaking remains fun, although it can lead to mixed experiences with teammates.
