Similar to certain smartphone brands, Panic does not provide a charger with the handheld. However, they’ve now introduced their own charging adapter specifically for the Playdate.

    Packaging and Cable

    The Playdate comes in a slim yellow box, clearly indicating that a charger is not included due to its thinness. Buyers will find a matching yellow USB-A to USB-C cable inside, which can be used for charging the device or connecting it to a computer. To complete the set, Panic has launched a charging brick in the same vibrant yellow.

    Charging Adapter Details

    This charging brick is a compact rectangular unit with a power output of 10W. It features a NEMA Type 1 plug suitable for North America and Japan, along with a USB-A port located at the top. Although a USB-C port might have been a better choice, Panic’s use of USB-A is logical since the Playdate comes equipped with a USB-A cable.

    The Playdate AC adapter is incredibly affordable at only $5, and you can also get an additional USB cable for the same price. Panic is providing a one-year warranty on the charger. Shipping within the United States typically takes about a week, while international deliveries can take between two to four weeks.

    Custom VR Game Engine Development with Python for Game Developers

    Developer DaFluffyPotato is well-known in the VR game development scene. Sadly, open source engines such as Godot have shown to have their limits and are not the first choice for many developers anymore. With a new 3D game on the horizon that requires a fresh development stack, DaFluffyPotato discovered an interesting mix of Python, GLFW, ModernGL, and OpenAL to build a surprisingly efficient VR shooter.

    The Role of PyopenXR

    One of the key elements that enable this creation is a project called PyopenXR. PyopenXR gives Python bindings for OpenXR, which is a collection of APIs designed to assist developers in making XR applications compatible with various VR and AR headsets. This open standard lays the groundwork for the entire tech stack. Since OpenXR doesn’t handle graphics rendering and merely acts as a communication link with XR devices, the developer turns to ModernGL, a high-performance rendering framework for Python. In addition, GLFW is utilized for window creation and input management, as PyopenXR is already compatible with it. Unfortunately, during testing, DaFluffyPotato finds a memory leak originating from PyopenXR but manages to fix the problem after locating the bug and applying the patch.

    Developing the Game

    Now that the stack is primed for use, DaFluffyPotato constructs a working prototype featuring a full asset setup. This includes various weapons, a character, game physics, a Minecraft-like block world, and enemy NPCs that appear on the map. The only thing left to add is spatial audio; fortunately, OpenAL can effortlessly provide 3D sound and has a workflow for implementation that’s similar to ModernGL. After dedicating some time to enhance the game, the outcome is quite impressive. The game boots quickly, taking around just a few seconds, which is significantly quicker than the majority of VR games. Moreover, the game does not overburden the CPU it operates on. Overall, this is a thrilling project, and DaFluffyPotato is already mapping out future updates that will include improved enemy NPCs and multiplayer features.

    When Google decided to close its Stadia game streaming service in early 2023, they gave users of the Stadia Controller a chance to transform it from a Wi-Fi controller to a Bluetooth controller, making it usable with other devices.

    Extension of Deadline

    Initially, the online tool designed for this conversion was set to be discontinued on December 31, 2023, but Google has pushed this date back to December 31, 2024. Recently, the tech giant has once again extended this deadline.

    New Conversion Date Announced

    The Stadia Controller webpage now indicates that users can convert their Wi-Fi controllers to Bluetooth mode until December 31, 2025, giving them an extra year. This conversion makes Wi-Fi functionality unusable, but users can still utilize USB mode.

    Pros and Cons of Switching

    Although switching to Bluetooth mode helps avoid the Stadia Controller becoming e-waste, there are some limitations. For instance, users cannot connect headphones through the 3.5mm audio jack or USB port because the Bluetooth Low Energy connection does not allow passthrough audio. However, if the controller is used in wired mode via the USB port on Windows or Android, the audio jack remains functional.

    Upon completion of the switch, the controller can be connected to various devices like Windows 10 and 11 PCs + Steam, macOS 13 + Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. Additionally, users can customize the functions of the Assistant and Capture buttons.

Players can go solo or team up with up to three friends, engaging in turn-based battles and exploring procedurally generated maps. These maps are made up of hexagonal tiles, and every turn brings chances to explore, meet enemies, fulfill quests, or encounter random events. This varied gameplay helps keep the adventure lively and interesting.

    Created by Curve Games and published by IronOak Games, For The King II was released in November 2023. It is priced at approximately $25 on Steam and has earned a “Mostly Positive” rating, with around 70 percent of 9,800 reviews being favorable.
