  • Hideaki Itsuno on Leaving Capcom: Insights on Devil May Cry 5

Hideaki Itsuno on Leaving Capcom: Insights on Devil May Cry 5

    Key Takeaways

    1. Hideaki Itsuno has left Capcom after 30 years, focusing on creating a new AAA title instead of continuing established franchises.
    2. At 55, Itsuno views this as his “last chance” to explore new concepts, feeling limited by Capcom’s focus on existing IPs.
    3. He has joined Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios to develop a cross-platform AAA game, with a team that includes former Capcom staff.
    4. Itsuno aims to manage costs and timelines carefully while creating a unique gaming experience, inspired by recent successful titles.
    5. His departure raises questions about the future of the Devil May Cry series and whether his new project will compete with it.

Hideaki Itsuno has made the decision to part ways with Capcom after thirty years of leading major franchises such as Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma. His departure came after the launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2 last year.

    Reasons for Departure

In a talk with VGC, Itsuno shed light on the reasons for his exit from Capcom, mainly linking it to his age. At 55, he sees this moment as a “last chance” to craft a brand-new AAA title, rather than just building on already successful franchises.

With Capcom currently focused on revitalizing established IPs like Resident Evil and Street Fighter, there was not much opportunity for Itsuno to explore new concepts, despite the company’s remarkable successes over the past ten years.

    Pursuing New Challenges

Itsuno felt the need for a new beginning or a fresh challenge, believing he had already fulfilled his vision with the release of Devil May Cry 5 in 2019 and the successful launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2 in 2024. “With Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, I already did what I wanted to make,” he remarked.

He pointed out that if he continued at Capcom, he would likely find himself working on yet another Devil May Cry game without even realizing it. While he did show some interest in future sequels, he felt it wouldn’t bring the same satisfaction as creating something entirely new.

    New Ventures

Currently, Itsuno has joined Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios as a lead, where he has formed a team to develop a cross-platform AAA game. Recently, Lightspeed Studios expanded by launching a second office in Osaka, which is the hometown of Capcom.

The studio is home to 40 employees, with one-third of them being former Capcom staff, including Toshihiro Nakagawa, a writer for Devil May Cry who has collaborated with Itsuno since Devil May Cry 2. Also joining the team is character designer Daigo Ikeno, who has worked on both Devil May Cry and Street Fighter, alongside the legendary illustrator Bengus from Capcom.

    A Thoughtful Approach

Itsuno is taking a careful approach in developing his new AAA game, ensuring that costs do not spiral and that project timelines are adhered to. He mentioned being influenced by recent standout titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, in contrast to the Souls-like games that have been flooding the market recently.

The director is eager to deliver a unique experience that doesn’t simply follow the formula of any existing blockbuster video games. It remains to be seen if his new project will directly compete with future releases in the Devil May Cry series.

Gamescom has proven once more that it is the leading gaming event in the world, breaking previous records with an astonishing 357,000 attendees in Cologne, Germany, from August 20 to 24. This is a slight rise of 6.5% from the 335,000 visitors from 120 countries who attended the event in 2024. The information was shared by Geoff Keighley, the host of Opening Night Live, through a tweet on X last week.

    International Growth

The participant count from various countries also increased from 120 to 128, showing a rise in global interest in gaming, with over 34,000 trade visitors arriving from Asia and North America. The Cologne Fair show floor was extensive, featuring a record of 1,568 exhibitors from 72 nations, all spread across 233,000 square meters of exhibition space.

    Record Viewership

The Gamescom Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley on August 19, 2025, attracted an impressive 72 million viewers worldwide, nearly double the 40 million viewers in 2024, marking an 80% surge year-over-year. On Saturday night, 630 million people tuned in for various Gamescom content broadcasts and showcases.

Felix Falk, managing director of the German Games Industry Association, commented on the magnitude of Gamescom, stating:

“Gamescom 2025 sets new standards. Bigger, more diverse, and more international than ever before, the most important festival of gaming culture underscores the positive force that games, the industry, and the global community represent.”

    A New Milestone

Gerald Bose, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse, which organizes Gamescom, also shared his thoughts, saying, “Gamescom 2025 has once again set a new standard for large-scale international events.

Gamescom merges business and entertainment like no other event in the world, as demonstrated by the 1,568 exhibitors across 233,000 square meters of total exhibition space. With record figures in almost every category, the vast array of experiences and global participation, Gamescom stands as the key event for the worldwide gaming community.”

The record attendance this year was driven by an impressive lineup of games, including Hollow Knight: Silksong, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Dying Light: The Beast, Lords of the Fallen 2, Call of Duty Black Ops 7, Ninja Gaiden 4, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Silent Hill f, and many more.

Given the remarkable attendance and Opening Night Live viewership numbers, Gamescom 2026 faces a significant challenge in surpassing these achievements when it takes place next year from August 25 to 29 in Cologne.

  • Battlefield 6 Weapon Skins Leak: Authenticity Debate in Shooters

Battlefield 6 Weapon Skins Leak: Authenticity Debate in Shooters

    Key Takeaways

    1. Battlefield 6 is adopting a realistic military-themed design for skins, focusing on traditional camouflage and subdued colors.
    2. The game aims to distinguish itself from Call of Duty, moving away from flashy designs and celebrity collaborations.
    3. Fan reactions are mixed, with many praising the return to authenticity, while others feel the designs are dull and lack creativity.
    4. Overall sentiment is positive, with many fans appreciating the focus on realism, even if it limits personal expression.
    5. The impact of the leaked skins on the final version of Battlefield 6 remains uncertain, sparking discussions about authenticity in modern shooters.

The recent leak, which appeared on August 25 on X, reveals several camouflage designs that suggest the path DICE might be taking with Battlefield 6. Rather than using bright hues or extravagant designs, the emphasis seems to be on military-themed skins: traditional forest and natural camouflage, along with more subdued variations. While there are some artistic patterns present, the general vibe stays realistic and down-to-earth.

A New Direction for Battlefield 6

With this practical design style, Battlefield 6 seems to be trying to distinguish itself from its main rival, Call of Duty. Recently, Call of Duty has been criticized for its anime collaborations, celebrity-themed skins, and vivid neon colors. DICE appears to be moving away from flashy marketing tricks and is instead focusing on authenticity and realism, aiming to position Battlefield 6 as a serious, military-oriented shooter.

    Fan Reactions Are Mixed

The feedback in the comments on X has been primarily positive. Many fans consider Battlefield 6 as a comeback to the series’ core elements, with authenticity being a crucial aspect of its charm. Comments like “Finally, weapon skins that don’t resemble a toddler’s art class” show strong backing for DICE’s realistic approach. However, not every player shares this enthusiasm; some called the skins dull or lacking in creativity. One user put it simply: “Could be better.” Others voiced a wish for greater customization options, like the ability to create their own designs.

    Overall Sentiment Is Positive

In summary, most fans appear to be happy. Many perceive the move towards realism as a positive change, even if it sacrifices some personal expression. Whether the leaked skins will appear in the final version of Battlefield 6 is still uncertain, but the leak has already ignited a wider conversation about authenticity and realism in today’s shooters.

  • Microsoft Pressures Candy Crush Team to Use AI After Job Cuts

Microsoft Pressures Candy Crush Team to Use AI After Job Cuts

    Key Takeaways

    1. Microsoft has heavily invested in AI technology, impacting its gaming divisions, particularly King, the developer of Candy Crush, which experienced significant workforce reductions.
    2. King employees face a challenging work environment, with management making decisions without clear communication and recent job cuts affecting morale.
    3. The mandatory use of AI for daily tasks is causing stress among King employees, who worry that it may lead to further job losses.
    4. There are concerns about the quality and creativity of AI-generated content, with creators fearing it may replace skilled artists’ work.
    5. Analysts believe Microsoft is focused on cutting costs and increasing its commitment to AI, but employees are hesitant to embrace these changes.

Microsoft has put a lot of money into AI technology, which has significantly affected its gaming divisions. One of the most impacted is King, the developer behind Candy Crush, which recently had a large reduction in its workforce. A report from Mobilegamer.biz reveals that Microsoft is encouraging its remaining staff to depend heavily on AI. However, with worries about more layoffs, employees are reluctant to adopt these new tools.

    A Difficult Work Environment

The article highlights the challenging work conditions that King employees endure every day. The management frequently makes decisions without providing any explanation to the developers and artists involved. When Microsoft cut 200 jobs, many were selected without regard for their actual performance.

    AI’s Uncertain Role

The mandatory use of AI adds more stress for the remaining employees at King. A source from Mobilegamer stated that the company expects “70 or 80% daily usage of AI for routine tasks.” This reliance on AI could lead to further job losses, especially for those who were instrumental in developing and training these technologies.

King has enjoyed great success with mobile games like Candy Crush and Farm Heroes Saga. Nevertheless, this shift could endanger vital roles for developers, artists, and writers. Analysts believe that Microsoft aims to cut costs and bolster its commitment to the AI sector. However, the workers are not eager to accept these shortcuts.

    Concerns About Quality and Creativity

Along with the fear of job loss, creators criticize the often subpar quality of output produced by these AI tools. Since the technology relies on a pre-existing database of codes and images, there is a risk of copyright violations as well.

While AI tools like ChatGPT that streamline everyday office tasks might not be as controversial, gamers remain cautious about AI-generated content taking the place of skilled artists’ work. For instance, Microsoft’s Muse project uses generative AI to craft gaming experiences.

    2. Microsoft plans to extend the new handheld mode to three additional gaming handhelds currently available on the market.
    3. The Xbox full-screen experience will first be available for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, with updates for existing models to follow.
    4. The Xbox on Handhelds website has been updated but does not include the ROG Ally, focusing instead on the Legion Go S and MSI Claw 8 AI+.
    5. A clear timeline for when the Handheld Gaming Mode will be available for existing devices has not yet been provided.

The recent launches of the ROG Xbox Ally and the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X during Gamescom 2025 have finally wrapped up. Asus and Microsoft’s partnership is set to be the first to demonstrate the Handheld Gaming Mode of Windows 11, but they won’t be the only ones.

    Upcoming Updates for Existing Devices

Microsoft has now subtly let it be known that three other gaming handhelds currently on the market will also get the new handheld mode for Windows 11. In June, the company shared some details, mentioning:

The Xbox full-screen experience will debut with the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X, and our next priority will be to update the available ROG Ally and ROG Ally X… Similar full-screen Xbox experiences are planned for other Windows handhelds, beginning next year.

Details from the Xbox on Handhelds Website

Interestingly, the Xbox on Handhelds website has updated to match Microsoft’s previous announcement about the ROG Ally X. However, the ROG Ally is oddly missing from the site. Instead, it features the Legion Go S and MSI Claw 8 AI+ (currently priced at $999 on Amazon) alongside the ROG Ally X. Sadly, we still don’t have a clear timeline for when Windows 11’s new Handheld Gaming Mode will reach existing devices. • Mid-September Nintendo Direct Expected for Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary

Mid-September Nintendo Direct Expected for Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary

    Key Takeaways

    1. A Nintendo Direct event is rumored for mid-September 2025, possibly on September 12 or 13, coinciding with Super Mario Bros.’ 40th anniversary.
    2. High anticipation surrounds Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, with age ratings granted and a potential late 2025 release.
    3. The recent Gamescom presentation showcased Kirby Air Riders, launching on November 20, 2025, at a price of $70.
    4. Competition from third-party games in September may influence Nintendo’s decision to limit first-party title showcases.
    5. The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 but has had a limited number of first-party game releases initially.

Rumors are buzzing around the internet about a possible Nintendo Direct event scheduled for mid-September 2025. This news was first shared by SwitchForce on X, and it may address the somewhat limited number of first-party game releases following the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch.

    Speculation on the Date

As of now, Nintendo has not officially confirmed the date for a Nintendo Direct announcement. Still, many are guessing that it could take place on either September 12 or September 13, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., first launched in 1985. This has fueled speculation about the potential unveiling of a new Mario game in the coming month.

High Hopes for Metroid Prime 4

Excitement is also reaching new heights for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which was first revealed back in 2017. The title has already received age ratings from the ESRB in the U.S. and the South Korean classification board, suggesting that a release date could finally be on the horizon. Earlier this year, Metroid Prime 4 was showcased at the Gamescom 2025 event in Cologne, Germany, allowing attendees to experience an early hands-on demo. While various leaks and rumors hint at some last-minute development issues, Nintendo has reassured fans that the game is still set for a late 2025 release.

    Upcoming Releases and Competition

The rumored Direct event follows Nintendo’s recent presentation at Gamescom, where they introduced Kirby Air Riders, a continuation of the 2003 GameCube title Kirby Air Ride, which is expected to launch on November 20, 2025, priced at $70.

However, a number of third-party games, including EA Sports FC 26, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Cronos: The New Dawn, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, are also lined up for a September launch. This could mean that Nintendo may choose not to showcase its first-party titles in a way that could hurt sales during such a crowded release period.

Nintendo typically announces a Direct event 24 to 48 hours ahead of time, implying that an official announcement could be made on September 10, 11, or 12 if these rumors are accurate.

The Launch of Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 was released a few months ago, at the start of June 2025. While the console boasts a collection of retro and Nintendo Switch 1 titles, its selection of first-party games has been somewhat limited from the beginning.

Nonetheless, owners of the Nintendo Switch 2 have seen their game libraries expand significantly over time, with titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Drag x Drive, Mario Kart World, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour now available. Additionally, Kirby Air Riders, Splatoon Raiders, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and The Duskbloods are set to arrive later on.

The game was first hinted at during the Game Awards in 2023, as part of Sega’s “Power Surge” initiative aimed at reviving old IPs. This initiative also includes the revival of other classics like Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi.

  • Roblox Hits 47.4 Million Players in August Amid Legal Issues

Roblox Hits 47.4 Million Players in August Amid Legal Issues

    Key Takeaways

    1. Roblox achieved a record of 47.4 million players online simultaneously in August 2025, driven by the popularity of the games “Steal a Brainrot” and “Grow a Garden.”
    2. The competitive “Admin War” between the game’s creators contributed significantly to user engagement, with “Grow a Garden” reaching 20 million players and “Steal a Brainrot” peaking at 22.3 million players.
    3. Roblox faces legal challenges, including 300 lawsuits from parents and officials over concerns about player safety and insufficient safety measures.
    4. Despite legal issues and restrictions in some countries, Roblox’s active user base grew to 380 million monthly users, marking a 23.3% increase from early 2024 to mid-2025.
    5. Roblox is focused on improving safety measures while maintaining user engagement, despite criticisms and controversies surrounding third-party users labeled as “vigilantes.”

Despite facing some recent legal issues, Roblox keeps on growing strong, setting new user records with an impressive 47.4 million players online at the same time in August 2025.

This information came from internal data shared by James Purell, a Roblox Strategy Consultant, in a post on LinkedIn. Purell noted that this remarkable achievement was driven by two of its most loved games: Steal a Brainrot and Grow a Garden, which have developed a friendly rivalry called the “Admin War,” known for its playful banter.

    Game Popularity Soars

Grow a Garden alone reached 20 million concurrent players, while Steal a Brainrot attracted 21.1 million users, later rising to 22.3 million based on community reports. This record engagement is largely due to the competitive “Admin War” between the game’s creators, whose playful exchanges brought millions of players to their respective Roblox games.

Purell acknowledged the developers’ efforts, stating, “These developers are creating the content that keeps 47M people engaged.” The platform has grown to have 380 million active users each month, marking a 23.3% rise from early 2024 to mid-2025.

    Legal Challenges Ahead

However, this achievement comes against a backdrop of concerns regarding player safety, as Roblox currently faces 300 lawsuits from parents and officials. This includes a notable case brought by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, who accused Roblox of endangering children through insufficient safety measures.

The lawsuit in Louisiana did impact Roblox’s stock price, resulting in a quick drop when it became public. Nevertheless, the company has managed a moderate recovery since then, with its stock price significantly higher than the lows recorded last week.

    Continued User Engagement

Similar incidents have emerged in states such as Michigan, involving cases with a 10-year-old girl and a 13-year-old victim from St. Louis. Despite the criticism and the platform being restricted in nations like China, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey, Roblox’s user base is still growing. The online gaming platform attracts millions, thanks to its game creation tools and sandbox gameplay, which cater to various play styles for its target audience.

While shareholders may wish for Roblox to keep enhancing its safety measures and to maintain open communication with law enforcement and users, the company is committed to ensuring the platform remains safe for younger players.

Roblox has also taken a firm stance against labeling certain 3rd-party users as “vigilantes,” claiming they participate in simulated child endangerment, despite many online communities opposing this view.
