Latest software update adds AI capabilities to OnePlus 11 and 12 models

While the Samsung Galaxy S24 series made headlines with its AI-powered features, OnePlus has quietly introduced its own AI offerings through a recent ColorOS update in China.

OnePlus Introduces AI Features in ColorOS Update

The update is rolled out to the OnePlus 12 and 11 models within the Chinese market. For the OnePlus 11, the firmware version is PHB110_14.0.0.403(CN01), and for the OnePlus 12, it is PJD110_14.0.0.405(CN01).

    New AI Features

Though not as extensive as Samsung’s offering, the update adds three generative AI features.

First up, there’s an AI Summarizer that can generate summaries of phone calls with key information like time, location, and other relevant details.

Next up is the AIGC Remover, an image editor that lets you erase unwanted people or objects from your photos, similar to AI photo editing on Samsung and Google Pixel devices.

Finally, OnePlus is offering an Article Summarizer feature that provides quick summaries of articles with just a single tap.

    Additional Updates

Beyond AI, the update also offers the ability to unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner without waking the screen. Users can now control QQ Music on Always-On Display, and there is an option to display the screen recording indicator in the status bar or a floating window.

The OnePlus 12’s update not only enhances Bluetooth, NFC, and WLAN network stability and compatibility but also addresses the issue of network signals in places with subway-like conditions. You can check the complete changelog of the update via the screenshot below.

    Possible Global Rollout

As aforementioned, currently, these AI features are only available on the Chinese version of ColorOS. However, as ColorOS shares a similar base with OxygenOS used globally, there’s a possibility they might be rolled out to the global OnePlus 12 and 11 models in the future.

  • India launch of Honor Pad 9 is imminent after receiving BIS certification.

India launch of Honor Pad 9 is imminent after receiving BIS certification.

Honor launched the Pad 9 in China in December, and it seems like the global release is imminent since the tablet has already received certification in Singapore. Additionally, the Honor Pad 9 has now secured the BIS certification, indicating its likely launch in India.

BIS Certification for Honor Pad 9

The BIS certification, granted on Jan 19 under the model number HEY2-W09, matches the one previously given by IMDA in Singapore.

    Specifications of Honor Pad 9

For a quick recap, the Pad 9 comes with a 12.1–inch screen with symmetrical bezels on all sides. Honor says the tablet has a paper-like display with a matte finish and a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.

The LCD panel offers a peak brightness of 550 nits, an 88 percent screen-to-body ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate. Moreover, the company claims the device can eliminate 98 percent of reflected light for a glare-free viewing experience. The tablet is also compatible with stylus and keyboard.

    Camera and Audio Features

On the camera front, the tablet features a circular camera module on the back housing a 13MP sensor, along with an 8MP selfie camera. For audio, the device is equipped with eight speakers.

    Powerful Performance and Battery

Under the hood, the Honor Pad 9 is powered by a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, coupled with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. It is backed by an 8,300mAh battery with 35W fast charging support. Software-wise, it runs on MagicOS 7.2 based on Android 13 out of the box.

    Color Options and Possible Launch

The Honor Pad 9 is available in three color options, namely Azure, White, and Gray. The company hasn’t confirmed any launch timeline for the tablet, but Honor has been teasing the launch of Honor X9b and Choice Earbuds X5 in India. So there’s a possibility the tablet might launch alongside them.

  • Samsung is parting ways with Google Assistant on all of its smart TVs

Samsung is parting ways with Google Assistant on all of its smart TVs

A significant change is coming to Samsung smart TVs. Starting March 1, 2024, Google Assistant will no longer be available on any Samsung TV model, including those that previously came with it.

Samsung TVs Losing Google Assistant Support

This development follows the quiet elimination of Google Assistant from Samsung’s 2023 TV lineup. The Samsung support page now confirms the discontinuation of this feature across all Samsung smart TVs, including:

    • 2022 models
    • 2021 models
    • 2020 8K and 4K QLED TVs
    • 2020 Crystal UHD TVs
    • 2020 Lifestyle TVs (Frame, Serif, Terrace, and Sero)

    Reason for Removal

Samsung started integrating Google Assistant into its TVs in 2020, but in a mere four years of time, the feature is now being removed from all supported models. Samsung says the removal is due to “a change in Google’s policy,” although the specific details remain unclear.

    Alternative Voice Assistants

The support page notes, “Important: Due to a change in Google’s policy, Google Assistant will no longer be available on Samsung TVs beginning March 1st, 2024. Check out other options for voice assistants on Samsung TVs.”

Google recently made changes to Assistant by removing 17 features, though any connection to this development is unknown.

With the departure of Google Assistant, Samsung TV owners will now have to switch to other pre-installed voice assistants, that is, Samsung’s Bixby and Amazon’s Alexa.

    Considerations for Samsung TV Owners

But for those who are accustomed to Google Assistant, we guess you now have no option other than switching to a different TV brand altogether. This could be a viable option if you’re considering purchasing a new TV, but surely isn’t the most practical.

Google Assistant Support in Other Brands

Currently, almost all smart TV brands, excluding Samsung, such as LG, Sony, TCL, and Hisense, continue to offer Google Assistant support in their TVs.

Global smartphone shipments for Q4 2023 show 8.6% YoY growth, according to Omdia, with Apple experiencing a 6.5% YoY increase.

The global smartphone market experienced a growth of 8.6% year on year (YoY) in Q4 2023, according to a report by research firm Omdia. This is considered a decent performance, despite rising inflation in some markets. The report also highlighted a 6.5% YoY improvement by Apple during the same quarter.

    Positive Growth in Smartphone Market

In Q4 2023, the global smartphone market achieved shipments of approximately 328 million units. This growth marks a significant change in fortunes, ending a streak of 9 consecutive quarters of decline in YoY smartphone shipments since 2021. The market faced numerous challenges in 2022, including supply chain disruptions, but has managed to bounce back.

    Apple’s Leading Performance

Apple emerged as the top performer among its competitors in Q4 2023. The company recorded shipments of a record-breaking 78.7 million units, representing a 6.5% improvement from the same period in 2022. The surge in shipments can be attributed to the increased demand for the iPhone 15 lineup. On the other hand, Samsung experienced a 9% decline in shipments compared to Q4 2022. Xiaomi, a Chinese powerhouse, continued its recovery efforts with 41.2 million units in shipments. Other notable brands on the list include Transsion, Oppo, Honor, and Motorola.

    Positive Outlook for 2024

The outlook for the global smartphone shipment trajectory in 2024 is positive, with expectations of returning to growth this year. However, Omdia predicts potential challenges that could result in declines in the second half of 2024. Factors such as delays in economic recovery, political instability, and the growing demand for used/refurbished smartphones due to reduced purchasing power of consumers may impact the growth trajectory.

Revolt Motors is making waves in India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector with its innovative approach. The company is focused on democratizing electric mobility and has recently launched the RV400 BRZ, an electric motorcycle that offers both affordability and performance, making it an appealing choice for a wider range of Indian consumers.

    Affordable and Powerful

Priced at approximately $1,662, the RV400 BRZ stands out as the most budget-friendly option in Revolt Motors’ electric motorcycle lineup. This move showcases the company’s commitment to making sustainable transportation accessible to more people. Despite its affordable price, the RV400 BRZ does not compromise on quality or performance. It shares the same technical features as its higher-end counterparts, including a 3.24-kilowatt-hour battery and a 5-kilowatt motor. With these specifications, the bike can reach a top speed of 85 kilometers per hour and offers a range of 80 to 150 kilometers, depending on the riding mode selected.

    Simplified Features for Affordability

To achieve its affordable price point, the RV400 BRZ simplifies its feature set. It does not include advanced tech features like smartphone connectivity or keyless ignition. However, it retains essential safety features such as regenerative braking, a combined braking system, and a sidestand motor cutoff. The bike also features a fully digital instrument cluster that provides information on speed, battery status, and selected ride mode. Additionally, charging the RV400 BRZ is relatively quick, with a full charge achievable in just 4.5 hours.

    Sporty Design and Vibrant Colors

The RV400 BRZ maintains the sporty, naked bike design that has become a signature of the Revolt brand. It is available in five vibrant colors, ensuring that riders can choose a style that matches their preferences.

    Driving Sustainable Urban Mobility

Revolt Motors’ launch of the RV400 BRZ represents more than just a new model; it signifies a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility in India. By making electric motorcycles more accessible, Revolt Motors is not only selling a product but also contributing to a cleaner and greener future on India’s roads.

  • Apple Vision Pro exceeds expectations in drop tests with impressive durability

Apple Vision Pro exceeds expectations in drop tests with impressive durability

Apple’s new Vision Pro headset has been put through drop tests to assess its durability, and the results may surprise some users. Sam Kohl of Apple Track conducted the tests, which showed that the headset can withstand bumps and falls from significant heights, although there are some caveats.

    Summary of the Drop Tests

During regular usage, the Vision Pro headset experienced minor scratches on the glass from accidental bumps against walls or doors, but no significant damage occurred. Even intentional bumps against walls did not shatter the glass. However, the light seal, which helps block out ambient light, did come off easily during the testing.

When the headset was dropped onto a carpet from a low height multiple times, it survived without major damage. However, the right speaker stopped working after the third drop due to an internal break in the band connection. Despite this, the headset remained in good overall condition and fully functional.

A significant fall from 10-12 feet finally resulted in shattered front glass. However, the glass did not break into pieces, and the headset continued to function normally.

It is worth noting that the front glass of the Vision Pro can be peeled off to expose the display layer, which, although still functional, is likely very delicate and prone to damage.

    Conclusion

Overall, the Vision Pro headset demonstrated better-than-expected resilience in everyday usage scenarios. The only weak points seem to be the speakers and light seal becoming loose. While users should exercise caution, especially if they tend to drop their gadgets frequently, the headset offers good durability.

  • Vision Pro Gets Developer Strap (USB-C Dongle) from Apple

Vision Pro Gets Developer Strap (USB-C Dongle) from Apple

Apple Vision Pro is now officially available for purchase with a collection of nearly 600 apps designed specifically for the headset. Although this number may seem substantial, it falls short compared to the extensive app stores of the iPhone and iPad.

Apple Introduces “Developer Strap” for Vision Pro

In an effort to support developers, Apple has introduced a “Developer Strap” for the Vision Pro, priced at $300. It essentially functions as a USB-C dongle allowing developers to make a direct connection between the headset and a Mac.

The strap is exclusively available through the Apple Developer website and is targeted at developers who can use this USB-C dongle to “accelerate the development of graphics-intensive apps and games.”

This likely means compiling and debugging apps directly on the device, bypassing the need for a wireless connection. However, Apple hasn’t confirmed if file transfer is also possible (via 9to5Mac).

Developer Strap Benefits for Vision Pro Projects

While development options are available for other Apple devices like Apple TV and Watch, transferring VisionOS apps with 3D features can be cumbersome over Wi-Fi. Hence, the Developer Strap can be particularly valuable for developers working on Vision Pro projects involving these advanced features.

However, it’s important to note that Apple is strictly positioning this accessory for developers and not for consumers. Thus, it’s not available through the regular Apple Store. Instead, it can only be ordered via the Apple Developer site and currently by only US-based developer account holders.

Interestingly, the Developer Strap includes a built-in speaker, as developers need to replace the right audio strap that comes with Vision Pro.

Vision Pro Demos Now Available in Apple Stores

Separately, Apple Stores in the US are now providing 25-minute Vision Pro demos, showing the device’s capabilities, available content and apps, and more. The headset might launch in additional countries later this year.

  • Sale Begins for Skarper E-Bike Conversion Kit, Featuring Rear Disc Brake Integration

Sale Begins for Skarper E-Bike Conversion Kit, Featuring Rear Disc Brake Integration

Skarper has recently launched its highly anticipated e-bike conversion kit, which utilizes the bike’s rear disc brake. This innovative conversion kit was first introduced in 2022 and is now available for purchase.

    Unique Design

The Skarper e-bike conversion kit stands out from the numerous bicycle conversion kits on the market. Unlike traditional kits, Skarper’s kit taps into the bicycle’s disc brake system to power the converted e-bike. It includes a sleek 4kg clip-on mount that seamlessly integrates the motor, battery, and electronics into the bicycle. This compact unit is attached to the bike’s chainstay and uses the disc brake to drive the rear wheel. As a result, the kit does not require complex modifications to the bike itself, maintaining the bike’s integrity and ensuring a hassle-free conversion to an e-bike.

    Innovative Brake Engagement

One of the unique features of the Skarper e-bike kit is its method of engaging the disc brake without interfering with the braking surface. Instead of making contact with the standard section of the disc, the kit engages a section closer to the hub. This requires the replacement of the bike’s disc rotor with the Skarper rotor. However, Skarper assures users that this alteration does not significantly affect the bike’s performance when the kit is detached, allowing riders to easily switch back to pedal power.

    Impressive Performance

The Skarper e-bike kit complies with European regulations, offering a power output of 250W and a maximum assisted speed of 25km/h. Unlike some e-bike conversion kits, the Skarper kit is activated by pedaling rather than using a throttle. With a single charge, the kit can achieve a range of 50km, and the battery can be fully recharged in just 2.5 hours.

    Pricing and Availability

The Skarper e-bike kit is priced at £1,295 ($1,650). Despite its high price tag, the initial batch of kits has already sold out. Skarper is currently accepting pre-orders for the next batch, which is expected to be delivered shortly.
