  • Free Mixed-Rate Card-Idler RPG Launches on Steam with New Guilds

Free Mixed-Rate Card-Idler RPG Launches on Steam with New Guilds

    Key Takeaways

    1. Launch and Development: DPS Idle 2 has been released after its early access phase, but it has received a mixed response primarily due to ongoing issues with damage calculations at higher levels.

    2. Gameplay Mechanics: The game introduces a card-collection system and distinct elemental categories (Ice, Sun, Earth) to enhance character builds, but players face challenges with the prestige system that leads to significant “grind walls.”

    3. Player Concerns: Many players feel that the balancing decisions favor microtransactions, making late-game achievements seem statistically unattainable and detracting from the overall experience.

    4. Initial Enjoyment: The early gameplay experience is enjoyable and engaging for the first 50-100 hours, appealing to casual players as a low-commitment option.

    5. Caution Advised: Players should be aware of potential grind walls, especially on later levels, as progress may stall without game patches or significant time investment.

The sequel that many have been eagerly waiting for, DPS Idle 2, finally launched this week after completing its early access phase. The developer YDKR, who is also known for creating the original DPS Idle, aimed to offer players a more intricate and technical gameplay experience with this updated version that includes new “World” tabs. However, the full release has received a “mixed” response from gamers. While YDKR has actively worked on fixing bugs during the beta phase, the transition to a full release has revealed persistent issues, particularly in how DPS Idle 2 calculates damage at the higher levels.

    Game Mechanics and Features

DPS Idle 2 follows the “line goes up” principle. It implements a card-collection mechanism to enhance your damage against various monsters. This sequel introduces distinct elemental categories such as Ice, Sun, and Earth, which are meant to add diversity to character builds. However, the main point of contention arises from the “prestige” system. Players have observed that later stages of the game tend to present a “wall” that can only be surpassed by either waiting for months in real-time or spending money on premium crystals.

    Player Reactions and Concerns

The “Mixed” rating appears to stem from the balancing decisions made by the developers, as mentioned earlier. Unlike the first installment, which felt more like a project made by hobbyists, DPS Idle 2 resembles a product aimed at commercial success, heavily centered around its microtransactions. Although the card mechanics are genuinely engaging for the initial 50-100 hours, many players express differing opinions on whether the “insane” late-game demands—where certain achievements seem statistically unattainable—are worth it for a free game.

    Conclusion and Warnings

In any case, this game serves as a low-commitment option for casual players, with the first several hours of DPS Idle 2 being quite enjoyable and essentially free. Nevertheless, be cautious of encountering the “grind wall” commonly seen in this series; if you find yourself stuck for weeks on the third island, it’s unlikely that just idling will help without a patch from YDKR.

  • Meta Unveils Four New AI Chips by 2027 to Disrupt Silicon Cycle

Meta Unveils Four New AI Chips by 2027 to Disrupt Silicon Cycle

    Key Takeaways

    1. Meta is launching four new generations of its MTIA hardware in the next two years, with the MTIA 300 already in production for ranking and recommendations tasks.
    2. Future models (MTIA 400, 450, and 500) will primarily focus on generative AI inference while managing all workloads.
    3. Meta aims to reduce reliance on external suppliers by developing its own AI chips, transitioning from being a buyer to an architect of its technology stack.
    4. The company plans to implement shorter release cycles, unveiling new MTIA generations every six months or less to adapt quickly to evolving AI techniques.
    5. The modular design of the MTIA chips allows for easy integration with existing systems, facilitating faster deployment and cost management for AI infrastructure.

Meta has laid out a bold new plan for its own AI chips, announcing that it will create and launch four new generations of Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) hardware over the next two years.

    New MTIA Lineup

The company explained in a post that the upcoming MTIA series will be used for ranking, recommendations, and generative AI tasks, with custom silicon becoming a key part of its overall AI infrastructure approach.

The most immediate news is that the MTIA 300 is already being produced. Meta mentioned that this chip will support training for ranking and recommendations, which expands the role of MTIA beyond just inference acceleration.

    Future Generations

Meta also indicated that the MTIA 400, 450, and 500 will manage all workloads, although the company plans to mainly use these later models for generative AI inference in the near future and through to 2027.

This gives Meta a much quicker chip release schedule compared to what’s common in the AI industry. The company noted that the four-chip strategy will be implemented over two years, which it considers a faster pace than traditional chip development cycles.

    Shift in Strategy

Originally introduced in 2023, MTIA was a series of custom-built chips aimed at AI tasks, but Meta’s latest announcement shows that this initiative is now a central focus. The company stated it is currently using hundreds of thousands of MTIA chips for inference tasks across organic content and advertisements in its apps, claiming these chips are more efficient and cost-effective than generic silicon for its purposes.

The key takeaway is clear: Meta is aiming for increased control over the hardware that powers its AI systems. Rather than depending solely on external suppliers, the company is working to create more of its own technology stack for the workloads that are vital to its platforms.

    Response to External Suppliers

Even though Meta recently entered into a multi-billion-dollar agreement for Nvidia’s latest GPUs, this new roadmap signals that the company is fed up with waiting on outside supply chains. By shifting its substantial inference workloads—which make up a large chunk of its AI expenses—onto custom MTIA hardware, Meta is directly contesting the dominance of third-party suppliers. This marks a transition from being merely a “buyer” to becoming an “architect,” enabling the company to control its own infrastructure margins for the first time.

Meta highlighted that its chip strategy emphasizes quick iterations, an inference-first design, and easier integration with standard software and hardware systems. This means that MTIA 450 and 500 are being primarily optimized for generative AI inference while still being able to support other tasks as needed, including training and inference for ranking and recommendations, as well as generative AI training.

    Importance of Inference

This focus is logical for a company that runs services at the scale of Meta. Inference can become particularly costly for large AI products, and Meta is obviously developing these later generations to better cater to that demand.

Meta also pointed out that its MTIA roadmap is built around shorter release cycles. While the industry typically launches a new AI chip every one to two years, Meta claims it can now unveil new MTIA generations every six months or less by utilizing modular designs. The company believes this will allow it to adapt swiftly to evolving AI techniques and decrease the costs associated with creating and deploying new hardware.

    Practical Advantages

Another benefit is the compatibility with existing systems. Meta said that the modularity of its silicon allows the new chips to easily integrate into current rack system infrastructure, which should facilitate quicker deployment.

AI infrastructure is rapidly becoming a crucial battlefield in the tech world, and Meta’s announcement underscores its serious commitment to chip design in this competitive landscape. The goal of releasing four new MTIA generations in two years is an ambitious plan, but the more significant message is that Meta no longer regards custom silicon as an experimental project. Now, MTIA is being framed as a fundamental component of how Facebook, Instagram, and its other platforms will handle ranking, recommendations, and generative AI workloads in the future.

Seiko has launched its newest exhibition for the Power Design Project in Tokyo, showcasing a range of innovative watch ideas under the title “Passionately and Obsessively Crafted Watches.” This exhibition is open from March 14 to March 29 at the Light Box Studio in Aoyama, featuring seven prototype creations from the brand’s internal designers.

    Unique Designs

One of the concepts comes from Naoya Sukeda, who illustrates how machining marks can influence the appearance of metal surfaces. This timepiece features a round, multi-layered case where the bezel, dial, and crown appear to be arranged in stepped layers. The strap design cleverly references the belts typically used in manufacturing machinery.

Another creation by design director Yu Ishihara showcases spherical shapes. Its rounded case smoothly arches from the front to the back, and the surface employs a mix of polished and brushed finishes to highlight the metal’s curves. Takuya Matsumoto, recognized for his contributions to Seiko’s high-end lines, has designed a third watch that focuses on dial textures. This dial is divided into four sections, each inspired by seasonal themes like spring rivers, summer sun, autumn skies, and winter snow.

    Mechanical Inspiration

Designer Kento Ito presents a concept centered on the mechanical aspect of winding a watch. In this design, rotating the bezel winds the movement while the off-centered hands provide room for a larger display of the power reserve. Another prototype by Miho Wada, who is the design director at Credor, features a dial composed almost entirely of hour marker elements. This design consists of 23 separate index pieces, creating a shiny surface that changes with the light.

The sixth concept from Akihiro Hasegawa experiments with the day indicator. The dial displays the current day in both Japanese and English, along with a preview of the next day’s date. This design uses Seiko’s classic blue for Saturday and red for Sunday.

    Whimsical Touch

The final watch is quite playful, featuring a cat named Ten-chan, designed by Yuki Omori. In this design, the cat’s body serves as the time display; the tail shows the hours, the feet indicate minutes, and the hands function as the seconds indicator. The case lugs resemble paws, complete with paw-pad details on the underside.

It’s important to mention that all seven designs are merely studies and not intended for production. You can also find the Seiko SSK001 available on Amazon.

  • New Light-Based Computing Tech Reaches 10,000 GHz Speed

New Light-Based Computing Tech Reaches 10,000 GHz Speed

    Key Takeaways

    1. Researchers from Politecnico di Milano used oscillating light to send and process data, achieving speeds over 10 terahertz (THz), significantly faster than current processors.
    2. The innovative use of tungsten disulfide, a two-dimensional material just three atomic layers thick, allows manipulation of electrons in different quantum states or “valleys.”
    3. The technique utilizes super brief laser pulses to control information states, functioning similarly to classical computing’s zeros and ones but at much higher speeds.
    4. High-speed operations were successfully conducted at room temperature using commonly available light pulses, essential for practical applications.
    5. The experiment provides a foundation for future developments in light-powered, ultra-fast computing, despite existing challenges in scaling and complexity.

Modern computers depend on the movement of electric charges through semiconductor transistors, but this method is limited by how fast it can be. To overcome this limitation, a team of researchers from Politecnico di Milano has innovatively utilized oscillating light to not only send data but also to process it. Their findings, published in the journal Nature Photonics, reveal that highly controlled laser pulses can manipulate materials to carry out logical operations at frequencies higher than 10 terahertz (THz), which is more than 1000 times faster than the fastest processors currently available.

    Innovative Materials

To reach these astonishing speeds, the scientists employed tungsten disulfide, a remarkably thin two-dimensional material that is only three atomic layers thick. In this ultra-thin structure, electrons can be pushed into two different quantum states, often called “valleys.” These valleys serve as a new kind of information unit, similar to the conventional zeros and ones found in classical computing, but they can be managed at a much quicker pace. By using a specific sequence of super brief light flashes, each lasting just a few quadrillionths of a second, the team was able to selectively turn on, off, and control these information states.

    Room Temperature Operations

Interestingly, these high-speed operations were performed at room temperature with light pulses that are already commonly used in labs. This optical method also enabled the team to independently assess how long the information they encoded remains stable before it starts to degrade, which is vital for any future practical uses.

Despite the recognition that challenges still exist—like increasing the number of bits and creating more intricate sequences of light pulses—this successful experiment lays a solid groundwork for the next wave of light-powered, ultra-fast computing hardware.

  • Valve Responds to NY Attorney General’s Loot Box Lawsuit: Disappointed

Valve Responds to NY Attorney General’s Loot Box Lawsuit: Disappointed

    Key Takeaways

    1. Valve claims that loot boxes in their games do not count as illegal gambling, viewing them as a common gaming feature.
    2. The lawsuit was filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who argues that loot boxes can create harmful gambling patterns, especially for children.
    3. Valve highlights their belief that their loot boxes are similar to traditional collectible activities and do not give players any competitive advantages.
    4. The company refutes the lawsuit’s demand to make digital items non-transferable, stating that item transfer benefits consumers.
    5. Valve has taken actions against real gambling sites misusing their game items, disabling over one million accounts involved in gambling and fraud.

Valve has finally made a statement regarding a lawsuit that was brought against them by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In their response, Valve insisted that the loot boxes found in their games do not constitute illegal gambling and are simply a common feature in the gaming industry.

    Valve’s Reaction

It’s not common for Valve to release statements like this one, which came out on March 11. The company mentioned that they were disappointed, noting they had been collaborating with the Attorney General’s office since 2023, yet still ended up facing this legal challenge.

    Details of the Lawsuit

To provide some background, the lawsuit was filed against “mystery boxes” in popular Valve games such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2. Attorney General James claimed that these loot boxes let players spend real money for a chance to get rare and valuable virtual items, which can eventually be sold for real cash.

She described this as a harmful gambling loop that particularly affects kids and teenagers. The lawsuit aims to compel Valve to eliminate loot boxes in New York, surrender profits, and pay fines. However, Valve countered that their loot box system doesn’t breach any laws in New York.

    Valve’s Defense

Valve articulated their stance, addressing players in New York, saying, “We informed the NYAG that these types of boxes in our games are commonly used, not only in video games but also in the real world, where many have grown up opening baseball card packs and blind boxes, trading and selling the items they find.”

Valve’s statement is significant since the trend of blind-box openings, Pokémon card collecting, and the currently popular Labubus has been around for many years. The concept of trading digital items, seen in games like World of Warcraft, Diablo II, and RuneScape, predates the introduction of loot boxes by Valve.

Moreover, Valve emphasized that the digital items available in their games are purely cosmetic and do not provide any pay-to-win advantages. They reassured gamers that they can enjoy their titles without ever needing to engage with loot boxes. Valve stated, “Since the items in the boxes are just cosmetic, players who don’t spend money won’t face any disadvantages.”

    Efforts Against Gambling

The company also pointed out the extensive efforts they’ve made to combat real gambling websites that misuse their Counter-Strike cosmetics. “Valve does not work with gambling sites,” they asserted. “So far, we’ve disabled over one million Steam accounts that were misused by third parties for gambling, fraud, and theft.”

The lawsuit includes a notable demand from the New York Attorney General that items must not be transferable. Valve, however, disagrees, asserting, “We believe that allowing the transfer of digital game items benefits consumers.”

In conclusion, Valve wrapped up their announcement by stating, “In the end, it will be up to a court to determine whose viewpoint—ours or the NYAG’s—is the right one.”
