  • iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air: Scratch Issues with Dark Colors

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air: Scratch Issues with Dark Colors

    Key Takeaways

    1. Apple launched the iPhone 17 series on September 9, introducing the slim iPhone Air alongside Pro and Pro Max versions.
    2. Display units in multiple countries showed noticeable scratches after a few hours of use, raising concerns about durability.
    3. A scratch test by YouTuber Wylsacom revealed significant vulnerability to scratches, especially on the Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro.
    4. Scratches were commonly found around the MagSafe charging area of the iPhone Air and on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro models.
    5. Apple claims the iPhone’s front is three times more resistant to scratches and the back is four times less prone to cracking than previous models, though scratch resistance on the back is not emphasized.

Apple introduced the iPhone 17 series on September 9, bringing forth the slimmest model yet, called the iPhone Air, along with the familiar Pro and Pro Max versions. The iPhone 17 Pro features an aluminum body, while the iPhone Air has a ceramic shield on both the front and back. Nevertheless, display units at Apple Stores in China, France, and London have been observed to have noticeable scratches and marks after just a few hours of use.

    YouTuber’s Scratch Test

On September 18, Russian YouTuber Wylsacom released a video where he conducted a scratch test on the iPhone 17 Pro. He pointed out that the Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro showed a significant vulnerability to scratches. This observation was supported by French publication Consomac, which confirmed similar issues during their hands-on experience at the Apple Store in Lyon Confluence. The dark-colored variants, like the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Space Black iPhone Air, also experienced these problems.

    Findings on Scratches

Scratches were especially common around the MagSafe charging area of the iPhone Air and throughout the back of the iPhone 17 Pro models. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg similarly reported finding scratches on demo units in cities like Shanghai, Hong Kong, and London. The Pro models feature an aluminum unibody, a choice made by Apple to incorporate a vapor chamber for better heat dissipation.

The iPhone Air, in contrast, features a ceramic shield that is fairly resistant to bending, but struggles with color retention. According to Apple, the front of the phone is three times more resistant to scratches and the back is four times less prone to cracking than earlier iPhone models, though they do not emphasize the back’s scratch resistance. Many enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the well-known JerryRigEverything to test the durability of the iPhone 17 series, particularly the iPhone Air. Meanwhile, several bend tests available online demonstrate the strength of the iPhone Air.

Wylsacom’s YouTube channel, along with reports from Consomac and Bloomberg, highlight these concerns regarding the iPhone 17 series.

The OnePlus 13 was launched last year in China. This smartphone was a flagship model and one of the first to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Soon, the OnePlus 15 will take its place, anticipated to be equipped with the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.

    Geekbench Scores

In earlier tests, the OnePlus 15 showed a low score on Geekbench due to its underclocked CPU. It achieved only 639 points in single-core performance and 1,871 points in multi-core tests. The recent Geekbench listing for a device with the model number PLK110, believed to be the Chinese version of the OnePlus 15, indicates it has 16GB of RAM and operates on Android 16. The phone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset scored an impressive 3,709 points in single-core tests and 11,000 points in multi-core tests.

This display is likely to be smaller than that of its predecessor and might feature a lower resolution. The phone is also set to remove the Hasselblad camera tuning, opting instead for the in-house DetailMax Engine.

On a brighter note, the OnePlus 15 is rumored to have a large 7,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging, an upgrade from the 6,000mAh battery with 100W charging found in the OnePlus 13. Furthermore, it is expected to showcase a new design language featuring a square rear camera housing. The smartphone might debut in China as early as October, with a global launch potentially happening in early 2026.

Xiaomi is getting ready to launch its first flagship phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in China, known as the Xiaomi 17 series. Although the exact launch date hasn’t been officially announced, it is rumored to be on September 30. The company has already introduced the “Magic Back Screen” feature for its Pro and Pro Max models.

    Exciting Features Unveiled

The back screen on the Xiaomi 17 Pro models can display widgets like a stopwatch, controls for music playback, allow users to answer phone calls, and provide updates on flight information and ride status.

    Selfie Capabilities and Camera Upgrades

  • iPhone 17 Pro Cost: Global Affordability Index Highlights Divide

iPhone 17 Pro Cost: Global Affordability Index Highlights Divide

    Key Takeaways

    1. The iPhone Affordability Index shows significant global disparities in the number of workdays required to purchase an iPhone 17 Pro, with the U.S. averaging just four days of labor.

    2. In India, acquiring the iPhone 17 Pro takes about 160 workdays, highlighting extreme cost differences compared to wealthier nations.

    3. Other countries with high workday requirements include the Philippines (101 days), Vietnam (99 days), and Turkey (89 days).

    4. Switzerland and Luxembourg have the lowest affordability, needing only about three days of earnings to buy the iPhone 17 Pro.

    5. The index relies on the official U.S. retail price of $1,099, and calculations may not reflect actual take-home pay, as seen in Germany where it effectively costs nearly two weeks of salary.

Tenscope has revised its iPhone Affordability Index, using the newly launched iPhone 17 Pro as a reference point. This index provides insights into the differences in wealth and income around the world. For example, in the United States, an average worker only requires four days of labor to buy an iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB).

    Global Disparities in Pricing

In stark contrast, in India, this new flagship phone costs about 160 workdays, which translates to 32 weeks or 8 months of labor when calculated on a 5-day workweek. The iPhone 17 Pro is also extremely pricey in other nations like the Philippines (101 days), Vietnam (99 days), and Turkey (89 days). On the flip side, individuals in Switzerland and Luxembourg find the iPhone 17 Pro most affordable, as they only need about three days of earnings to acquire the device.

    Pricing Considerations

It’s important to mention that Tenscope based their analysis on the official US retail price of $1,099, even if the costs may differ across regions. Additionally, the calculations for the index sometimes rely on gross income. For instance, in Germany, while the average gross income is around €4,700 ($5,533), the actual take-home pay is significantly lower at about €2,950 ($3,473). This implies that the iPhone 17 Pro realistically costs nearly two weeks’ worth of salary in Germany. Therefore, the findings in the iPhone Affordability Index should be interpreted as a rough estimate.
