While the laptop debuted in January during CES 2026, it did not go on sale in the US until the end of May. Nonetheless, HP has already discounted its gaming laptop before it begins shipping.

    Initial Pricing and The New Starting Point

    Initially, the new Omen Max 16 started at $2,679, featuring Intel Arrow Lake HX Plus processors. Now, Intel models start at $1,999 with the Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus and a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU. A 25% reduction, this $680 saving is not the $800 discount claimed on HP’s website.

    Comparing the RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti Configurations

    Still, one can also configure the GeForce RTX 5080 for $250 less than what HP originally charged for its GeForce RTX 5070 Ti sibling. According to our benchmarks, the GeForce RTX 5080 is around 16% faster than the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti when gaming. Some of HP’s pricing is misleading, though.

Moreover, it features a 4K 60 Hz IPS display, which is also included in a higher-priced version at $7,599 that comes with a Core Ultra 9 275HX, a GeForce RTX 5090, 128 GB RAM, and a 4 TB SSD.

    On the other hand, the entry-level models in Australia start with a Core Ultra 7 255HX, a GeForce RTX 5080, 16 GB RAM, and no storage for AUD 5,174. The ThinkPad T16g Gen 3 can be upgraded to the Core Ultra 9 285HX and a GeForce RTX 5090 along with a 3.2K Tandem OLED display, 192 GB RAM, and 12 TB of storage, which costs AUD 14,432. At the same time, an insider named Huang514613 has pointed out that Lenovo is set to launch at least four more gaming laptops featuring this new discrete GPU.

    As illustrated in the images below, these are updates to the existing models like the Legion Pro 5 16ADR10, Legion Pro 5 16IRX10, LOQ 15IRX10, and LOQ 17IRX10, rather than entirely new versions. Notably, every model except for the Legion Pro 5 16ADR10 comes equipped with Intel Arrow Lake HX processors, while the 16ADR10 uses AMD’s Dragon Range platform. Reports suggest that Nvidia has placed an embargo on manufacturers that will lift ‘around [the] end of April.’ This aligns with Amazon’s information that Lenovo is expected to launch its new Legion 5i on May 1.

Nevertheless, it’s anticipated that the refreshed processor will achieve slightly elevated clock speeds. Geekbench highlights boost clock frequencies just shy of 5.4 GHz, which is 100 MHz less than its predecessor. However, the real clock speeds will largely depend on the power capacity provided by the specific laptop.

    Performance Benchmarks

    In the Geekbench 6 results, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus scored 3,198 points in single-threaded performance and 21,581 points in multi-core performance. This indicates an increase of 5.6% and 4.6%, respectively, compared to the Core Ultra 9 285HX in this benchmark. Thus, while there is some performance improvement, a drastic leap shouldn’t be anticipated, as the new chips utilize the same architecture as the previous Arrow Lake models.

While this is technically safe, it is still very close to the limits for operational temperatures. The impact on performance is noticeable; the CPU clock rate peaks at 4 GHz at the beginning of the stress test, but then drops to 3.3 GHz after a brief time. If the CPU could maintain cooler temperatures, it might sustain higher clock speeds for longer durations.

    Unique Features

    Among its other interesting features are modular USB-C ports designed for easier repairs, along with support for USB-C charging up to 300 W. This eliminates the need for traditional barrel AC adapters.

It’s also been stated that the GeForce RTX 5080 will be included, boasting 16 GB of GDDR7 VRAM.

    This new version of the ROG NUC can accommodate up to 96 GB of DDR5-6400 RAM and comes with two M.2 2280 slots for PCIe Gen 4 SSDs. In addition, the mini-PC supports Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, along with a variety of ports:

    On top of that, Asus has packed all this tech into a newly designed chassis that measures 282.4 x 187.7 x 56.5 mm and weighs 3.12 kg. The mini-PC is equipped with three fans, one of which is specifically for cooling the CPU. Sadly, Asus hasn’t shared any details regarding pricing or when it will be available.

    If the GeForce RTX 5090 seems too pricey, there’s also an option for the Predator Helios 16 with a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. Other specifications consist of a 1080p webcam and a 90 Wh battery.

    Larger Model

    The Acer Predator Helios 18 AI serves more as a desktop replacement, featuring a massive 18-inch 4K mini-LED display that refreshes at 120 Hz, with a peak HDR brightness of 1,000 nits (600 nits SDR) and full DCI-P3 color coverage.

    Acer has not announced whether alternative screen types will be available for this model, but you can exchange the 4K 120 Hz panel for a 1600p 240 Hz option if you prefer greater refresh rates.

    For memory and storage, you can max out at 128 GB and 6 TB, respectively. The only other GPU option seems to be the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080. Additionally, the Predator Helios 18 AI comes with a 99 Wh battery and a 1080p webcam.

    Sadly, Acer has not revealed any pricing details for these laptops and mentioned they will be available in the market sometime in Q2, 2025.

    On the flip side, the vendor has also disclosed that AMD is working on successors to the “Dragon Range” CPUs, which will likely include a version with 3D V-Cache. Reports from both Golden Pig Upgrade and HXL suggest the new chip might be called the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, which would be fantastic if accurate, as it would save us from yet another rebranding. However, no specific details have been provided, so information about core counts and clock speeds is still unclear. The previous “Dragon Range” processors featured 16 cores and cache options of 64/128 MB, so we might expect something similar from the “Fire Range” series as well. Regardless, having desktop-grade chips in a mobile setup should guarantee remarkable performance, especially for high-end laptops.
