HP’s New Omen Max 16 Gets a Price Cut Before It Even Ships
Hardly any time has passed since HP released the new HyperX Omen Max 16, replacing the 2025 model we reviewed over a year ago. While the laptop debuted in January during CES 2026, it did not go on sale in the US until the end of May. Nonetheless, HP has already discounted its gaming laptop before it begins shipping.
Initial Pricing and The New Starting Point
Initially, the new Omen Max 16 started at $2,679, featuring Intel Arrow Lake HX Plus processors. Now, Intel models start at $1,999 with the Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus and a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU. A 25% reduction, this $680 saving is not the $800 discount claimed on HP’s website.

Comparing the RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti Configurations
Still, one can also configure the GeForce RTX 5080 for $250 less than what HP originally charged for its GeForce RTX 5070 Ti sibling. According to our benchmarks, the GeForce RTX 5080 is around 16% faster than the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti when gaming. Some of HP’s pricing is misleading, though.
Misleading Discounts and Higher-End Variants
Last month, it was possible to configure the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, RTX 5090, 64 GB of RAM, 2 TB of PCIe Gen 5 storage and a 240 Hz OLED display for $4,469. However, this variant now costs $4,769, allegedly down from a $5,569 MSRP. By contrast, AMD alternatives cost at least $2,899 with the Ryzen AI 7 450 and an GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.
