Apple is said to be making changes to the back design of its upcoming iPhone 17 series. Reports indicate that the new model will have a rectangular camera bump, moving away from the square design that has been around for several generations.
Design Insights
A leaked chassis for the iPhone 17 Pro from the supply chain offers a peek at this new design, which appears similar to a Pixel’s camera visor. While there are shifts in the design of the camera, fans hoping for a complete revamp of the camera system in the iPhone 17 Pro series may find themselves let down. According to a leak from a trusted tech source, Digital Chat Station (DCS), it seems that Apple will maintain the camera setup that was first introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro series.
Camera Specs for the iPhone 17 Pro
In a recent leak, DCS noted that the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to keep the same triple-lens rear camera configuration as its predecessor. This means it will feature a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 48-megapixel periscope telephoto lens that offers 5x optical zoom. The report also pointed out that both the main and telephoto lenses will likely still use a blend of glass and plastic components, known as GP lenses.
There might be an improvement for the selfie camera, as per the leak. DCS proposed that the front-facing camera could be upgraded from the present 12-megapixel sensor to a 24-megapixel one. While the absence of significant camera enhancements might disappoint some, it’s not a big shock, as Apple usually takes a multi-year strategy when it comes to rolling out major camera upgrades across its smartphones.
Expectations Moving Forward
Apple recently made noteworthy updates to its camera hardware with the iPhone 16 Pro series, introducing a new 48MP fusion camera, an enhanced 48MP ultrawide camera, and a dedicated camera control button. It’s anticipated that these specifications will be carried over to the iPhone 17 Pro models. However, there is a chance that the iPhone 17 Pro could see improvements in software processing, even if the hardware remains unchanged.
We will probably need to wait for Apple’s official announcement to fully understand what the iPhone 17 Pro has for photography enthusiasts. But based on this leak, it appears that Apple feels secure with its current camera system and might be directing its attention to improving other significant features for the next generation of iPhones.
