iFixit Teardown Reveals Apple Watch Series 10 Lacks Upgrades

The Apple Watch Series 10 features a case that is a bit larger and thinner compared to the Series 9. Nevertheless, the modifications in design and functionalities are rather minor, and the overall construction of the smartwatch remains almost the same as its earlier version.

    Inside the Smartwatch

To access the internal components of the smartwatch, one must first remove the display from the case. The screen is secured using a substantial amount of adhesive. Once you take off the display, it becomes impossible to put it back on; the display cable is arranged in a manner that requires almost complete disassembly of the smartwatch to swap the screen out.

    Battery and Other Components

Fortunately, the battery and the Taptic Engine can be swapped out fairly easily once the case is opened. However, the mainboard, which includes the processor, RAM, and storage, must be replaced as a single unit, similar to the glass back and all sensors present in the smartwatch. It’s almost funny how little has changed between the teardown of the Apple Watch Series 10 and the first-generation model: even after ten years, Apple has made only slight adjustments to the smartwatch’s design.

    Repair Rating

iFixit has rated the Apple Watch Series 10 with a repair score of 3 out of 10, indicating that the design modifications for easier repairs are significantly overdue. Apple itself provides a battery replacement service priced at $99. For any other type of damage, Apple suggests a complete replacement, which can range from $299 to $399 depending on the model.

  • Apple Watch Ultra and AR Glasses to Embrace MicroLED Soon

Apple Watch Ultra and AR Glasses to Embrace MicroLED Soon

Apple is anticipated to broaden its Vision series of "spatial computing" wearables, introducing a new design that resembles AR glasses more closely than the current Pro headset. These upcoming glasses may provide a more comfortable fit for the face, though they could still be pricey. They are rumored to feature cutting-edge displays utilizing microLED technology instead of the traditional OLED, as shared by leaker Jukanlosreve. The first-generation Apple Glasses, possibly named iGlass, are expected to debut alongside the latest version of the Watch Ultra, which might also sport a similar type of display.

    New Launch Timeline

Additionally, the release timeline for these devices has shifted to 2026. Previous reports about the initial Apple glasses and the future Watch Ultra hinted at delays that could push their launches to 2027. This new timeline suggests that Apple is making some progress on these projects, although fans may have to wait a bit longer than anticipated.

    Competing in the Market

If Apple aims to compete with products like the ‘smart’ Ray-Bans, it would be ideal for the tech giant from Cupertino to focus on privacy more than Meta’s approach, which often raises concerns about intrusive data collection. The potential for a more privacy-conscious design and usage would certainly differentiate Apple’s offering in a crowded market, making it an appealing choice for consumers who value their personal information.

Jukanlosreve shared this information via Twitter/X, keeping everyone updated on the latest developments in Apple’s wearable tech journey.

  • Apple AirTag 2 Launching in H1 2025 with Upgraded Tracking Chip

Apple AirTag 2 Launching in H1 2025 with Upgraded Tracking Chip

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to launch a new version of its AirTag in the first half of 2025. This will be the first significant update to the tracking device since it was launched in 2021.

    New Technology for Better Tracking

Gurman suggests that this new version will be equipped with a more sophisticated chip, probably the second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, which was recently featured in the iPhone 15. This new technology is likely to improve how accurately the AirTag can track locations.

The original AirTag is powered by Apple’s U1 chip, which uses UWB technology along with Bluetooth to connect to Apple’s Find My network. This allows users to pinpoint their devices with high precision. Its stainless-steel design is both compact and lightweight, offering IP67 water and dust resistance for some protection against the elements.

    Features to Assist Users

The AirTag includes a tiny built-in speaker, which makes it easier for users to locate their AirTag by playing a sound when activated via the Find My app. The back cover can be removed, allowing users to change the battery as needed.

With the Find My app, users can track the AirTag on a map. Furthermore, the app offers more detailed assistance, including sound, haptic feedback, and visual directions using ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope technology.

In situations where someone misplaces an AirTag, it can be set to Lost Mode, which alerts the user when it’s found or comes back into range. If someone else finds the AirTag, they can tap it using an NFC-enabled device, which will show the owner’s contact details if they have been provided.

    Privacy Measures in Place

Apple has incorporated privacy features in the AirTag to stop unwanted tracking. For example, the Bluetooth signal identifiers used by the AirTag change frequently to prevent tracking by unauthorized users, and communications within the Find My network are encrypted from end to end.

The new AirTag is also rumored to work with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, although specific details about this feature are still unclear. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted last year that the production of AirTag had been postponed until 2025, but both he and Gurman expect a launch next year. So far, there are no signs of any changes in the design.

  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black Titanium Scratch Resistance Tested

Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black Titanium Scratch Resistance Tested

The new Black Titanium update for the Apple Watch Ultra might appear to be the ultimate gesture for fans of the device, unless you’re looking for a real hardware upgrade.

    Color Comparison

Zach Nelson, the host of JerryRigEverything, remarked that the newly introduced finish resembled Space Gray more than Jet Black, which was the iPhone 7’s infamous colorway that gained notoriety for negative reasons.

    Durability and Design

Despite this, Apple claims that the Black Titanium edition of its rugged 49mm watch will not face the same issues as the past. Interestingly, this version features a “diamond-like” coating made through a physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. This coating is designed to prevent the typical natural titanium from showing through and performed admirably in durability tests against the standard Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Garmin Fenix 7X, as examined by the YouTuber Chase the Summit.

    Testing Challenges

In the durability tests, each smartwatch was exposed to everyday objects like keys and concrete, and the debris simply wiped off the Black Titanium finish, which appeared to be the tougher surface. The testing continued on the JerryRigEverything channel, where Nelson subjected the Black Titanium surface to more extreme challenges, including contacting hollowpoint bullets.

    Final Thoughts

However, the tests concluded when Nelson used a standard razor blade from a branded knife. While it did leave typical titanium marks on the coating, it had no effect on the Ultra 2’s sapphire-enhanced display. Overall, it might be wise to handle the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the new color with extra caution. A protective case like the Lite Fit Pro (priced at $24.99 on Amazon) from Spigen could provide some additional security.

  • Garmin Fenix 8 with microLED and Tactix 8 with AMOLED Leaked

Garmin Fenix 8 with microLED and Tactix 8 with AMOLED Leaked

After Garmin previously listed a Fenix 8 Pro and a Fenix 8 microLED in an app back in September, the microLED version is making another appearance. Reports from Gadgets & Wearables indicate that this new model has been included in a watch face compatibility list that developers can access when they want to launch a watch face in the Garmin Connect IQ Store.

    Imminent Launch Indication

The presence of the smartwatch in multiple public records suggests that its launch is around the corner. Garmin has already partnered with Vuzix, a provider of the microLED panels that are set to be used in this flagship smartwatch. The Garmin Fenix 8 may become the very first smartwatch in the world to feature a microLED display. This technology, when compared to OLED, promises significantly increased brightness with less power usage and a longer lifespan without the risk of burn-in, though its production costs are notably higher.

    New Tactix Series Model

In addition, Garmin is also announcing a successor to the Tactix 7 AMOLED Edition, which will come in sizes of either 47 millimeters or 51 millimeters. In contrast, the previous Tactix 7 was solely available in the 51 millimeter size. The Tactix line is known for its various "tactical" features, including an integrated LED flashlight, a mode for visibility with night vision devices, and a kill switch that can erase all smartwatch data instantly. However, specifics on what new features the Tactix 8 will bring, besides the smaller size option, remain unknown.
