  • Silk Smart Textile Converts Body Heat to Electricity Efficiently

Silk Smart Textile Converts Body Heat to Electricity Efficiently

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed a new type of textile that converts body heat into electrical energy by using specially treated silk threads.

    How It Works

The concept revolves around a conductive silk thread that is coated in a unique plastic polymer. This polymer captures thermal energy created by the temperature difference between a person’s body and the surrounding air. This innovation brings us closer to creating wearable devices that function without batteries.

    Unique Advantages

"The polymers we use have special benefits – they are flexible, lightweight, and can be applied in both liquid and solid forms while being non-toxic," explains Mariavittoria Craighero, the lead researcher and doctoral student at Chalmers.

    Demonstrating the Technology

The research group presented two variations of this technology: a small button-sized gadget and a larger fabric panel. These devices generate electricity when there is a temperature difference, with the output voltage varying depending on the temperature gap and the amount of conductive material present.

The material has shown to be sturdy, remaining effective for over a year and enduring multiple washes. After undergoing seven washes, it retained about two-thirds of its conductive strength, although enhancements are needed for practical applications.

    Current Production Challenges

At present, producing these thermoelectric fabrics is a time-consuming process. In the laboratory, it involves a painstaking manual method that requires careful preparation and stitching. One sample of the fabric took four days to hand stitch.

    Future Implications

This innovation could revolutionize wearable technology, allowing garments to power devices such as fitness trackers and health monitors without the need for regular battery replacements. The technology harnesses the natural heat difference between our bodies and the air to continuously generate power.

This advancement represents a significant leap towards creating self-powered wearables, suggesting a future where smart clothing is comfortable, washable, and does not require battery recharging.

  • Samsung to Launch Apple Vision Pro Competitor in 2025

Samsung to Launch Apple Vision Pro Competitor in 2025

According to a recent presentation aimed at its investors, Samsung has identified key goals for 2025. These goals include expanding Galaxy AI, increasing mobile device sales, and venturing into XR. Thus, the company plans to launch its upcoming headsets by next year.

    Enhancing Device Compatibility

Additionally, Samsung is committed to improving its wearable devices, like the Galaxy Watches, to ensure better integration with current flagship devices such as the Galaxy S24 and the Tab S10 series of smartphones and tablets. There’s even speculation that the Galaxy Ring could serve as a controller for Samsung’s headsets.

    Collaborations for Development

On a related note, it is believed that Samsung will collaborate with Google to develop the software for their new hardware, similar to what was done with the latest Galaxy Watches. They are also expected to team up with Qualcomm to acquire XR-series chips for their headsets, akin to Meta’s approach.

    Premium Features Ahead

Samsung’s future XR devices might include options with micro-OLED displays, potentially positioning them as a more high-end alternative to the Quest 3S, which starts at $299 on Amazon. Consequently, the South Korean giant may soon compete with Apple’s Vision Pro or its future iterations.

  • Redmi Band 3 Launches in China: HyperOS, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC

Redmi Band 3 Launches in China: HyperOS, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC

Xiaomi just held a big event where they showed off the Xiaomi 15 series smartphones, the Pad 7 series tablets, the Watch S4, and the Smart Band 9 Pro. In a more low-key announcement, the company also revealed the Redmi Band 3, which is the next version of the well-liked Redmi Band 2.

Features of the Redmi Band 3

The Redmi Band 3 keeps the same design as the earlier model, sporting a 1.47-inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 172 pixels and a refresh rate of 60Hz. The display is framed by silicone bands that come in several colors such as white, pink, yellow, black, and dark gray. This new band has a slim profile, measuring only 9.99mm thick, and it weighs just 16.5 grams.

    Improvements Over Its Predecessor

This latest band brings a number of enhancements compared to the last one, including Bluetooth 5.3 for better connectivity, a water resistance rating of 5ATM, and NFC for making contactless payments. However, it does not have built-in GPS, which could be a downside for those who enjoy outdoor activities. It also includes 50 sports modes, along with All-Day Heart Rate Monitoring, All-Day Blood Oxygen Monitoring, and Scientific Sleep Tracking.

The smart band runs on Xiaomi HyperOS and offers more than 100 customizable watch faces. It is powered by a 300mAh battery that Xiaomi says can last up to 18 days on a regular charge. If used heavily, you might expect it to last about 9 days.

    Pricing and Availability

At the moment, the Redmi Band 3 is available in China for 159 yuan (around $22) in black and beige color options. It is still uncertain whether this device will be released globally, but given that the previous version was available internationally, there is a good chance the Redmi Band 3 will eventually reach other markets.

  • Humane Recalls 10,500 AI Pin Charging Cases Due to Safety Issues

Humane Recalls 10,500 AI Pin Charging Cases Due to Safety Issues

Humane has announced a recall for approximately 10,500 charging case accessories designed for the AI Pin. The notification was shared on X (via Engadget), where the company reported an incident involving one of the cases overheating and melting when used with a third-party USB-C cable and power source.

    Reason for Recall

The decision to recall was made "out of an abundance of caution," as the company discovered quality problems with battery cells supplied by an outside vendor. Humane has since terminated its relationship with this vendor to ensure customer safety.

    Assurance to Users

Humane confirmed that this problem does not stem from the hardware design of their products. The AI Pin, Battery Boosters, and Charge Pad are not affected, as the batteries for these items are supplied by a different vendor that has not been disqualified.

    Replacement and Refund Options

The company expects that replacements will be ready in 3 to 6 months. Users will have the option to select either a replacement or a refund. Customers who purchased the Charge Case accessory alone will be eligible for a refund of $149 (€137.02 or £115.51). Those who acquired it as part of the AI Pin Complete System will receive a refund of $129 (€118.63 or £100.02).

For more information, customers can check the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Humane Ground Control on X, and Engadget.
