A major realignment is underway at NEC Personal Computers as the company merges its Mate and VersaPro enterprise brands into the consumer-focused LAVIE lineup. The restructuring coincides with the launch of a strikingly engineered flagship notebook that pairs an ultra-light chassis with a battery normally reserved for much heavier workstations.
Engineering a 999-Gram Frame with a 99.9 Wh Battery
The new LAVIE BM94C tops a seven-model business refresh and weighs just 999 grams, yet it houses a 99.9 Wh battery—the maximum capacity permitted for air travel. Achieving that combination demanded fresh materials engineering in partnership with Toray. The base panel employs an aerospace-grade carbon laminate with resin-reinforced edges, while the lid builds on the same carbon layup by sandwiching a new, previously unsupplied ultralight core between layers of glass-fiber-reinforced resin.
Under Japan’s JEITA 3.0 testing protocol, the machine is rated for approximately 30.5 hours of video playback and up to 50.8 hours at idle. NEC frames those numbers in practical terms: enough endurance, the company says, to leave the charger behind for an overnight trip.
AI-Driven Battery Care and Fast Charging
Long-term battery health is managed through an AI-based charging profile designed to preserve around 72.7% of the cell’s capacity after five years of use. When power is needed quickly, 30-minute fast charging delivers enough energy for a full eight-hour working day. A one-tap power-saving mode is also built in, giving users a simple way to stretch runtime further during critical moments.
Specifications, Ports, and Availability
NEC offers the LAVIE BM94C with a choice of Core Ultra 5 (322 or 335) or Core Ultra 7 355 processors, paired with up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory and an SSD of up to 1 TB. The 14-inch display runs at a resolution of 1920×1200. Despite its sub-kilogram weight, the port selection remains practical: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet. Wireless connectivity covers Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The LAVIE BM94C is scheduled to ship in late July, with pricing starting at ¥584,100, which converts to roughly $3,600. The seven-model range arrives at a moment when several Japanese manufacturers are refining ultraportable designs aimed at hybrid-work endurance, though few have pushed the capacity-weight ratio this far.
