TerraMaster has introduced a second-generation model in its direct-attached storage lineup, the D8 Hybrid 2, preserving the original design’s hybrid architecture while upgrading core capabilities. The new unit is engineered to house up to four SATA hard drives alongside four M.2 NVMe solid-state drives inside a single enclosure.
Expanded Capacity and Real-World Performance
Users with demanding storage requirements can configure the D8 Hybrid 2 with up to 152 TB of total capacity, achieved by populating the bays with four 30 TB hard drives and four 8 TB SSDs. Reaching that ceiling, however, will come at a considerable cost given current storage pricing. On the performance side, a single NVMe SSD can deliver transfer speeds of approximately 1020 MB/s, while a properly configured four-drive hard disk array can reach around 980 MB/s. It is worth noting that the device does not include hardware RAID; users must rely on third-party software to set up any RAID configuration.
Tool-Free Design and Quiet Operation
The enclosure adopts TerraMaster’s push-lock drive trays for a completely tool-free experience when handling hard drives. Access to the M.2 slots is just as straightforward, thanks to a sliding side panel that allows quick SSD installation or swaps. For noise-sensitive environments, TerraMaster states that the D8 Hybrid 2 can operate as quietly as 21 dB, and the built-in cooling fan is rated for more than 50,000 hours of continuous use. These acoustic and durability claims remain to be validated in independent testing.
Connectivity and System Compatibility
Connection to a host computer relies on a single USB 3.2 10 Gbps port, and a dedicated power-saving mode can be activated via a physical switch. The D8 Hybrid 2 is compatible with a wide range of operating systems, including macOS, Windows, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS, Unraid, and TerraMaster’s own TOS software. Since the device functions strictly as a DAS, no networking features are included. The D8 Hybrid 2 is available now with a starting price of $239.99.
