Advanced stages achieved in the development of LG Innotek’s under-panel camera

LG Innotek is following in Samsung’s footsteps by developing Under Panel Camera (UPC) technology. The company is reportedly working on resolving the issue of low light in under-display cameras and has even filed for several patents to address these concerns. It appears that LG is preparing the UPC for future Apple iPhones set to launch in 2026.

Advantages and Disadvantages of UPC

UPC, which stands for Under display Camera, allows users to enjoy a seamless full display view without any distractions. The camera is hidden under the screen and only becomes visible when in use. However, one disadvantage of this technology is that it limits the amount of light that reaches the camera lens, potentially impacting the overall image quality. This may not meet the expectations of advanced photography users who often require high-resolution photos.

LG’s Solution: FreeForm Optic Lens

To overcome the issue of insufficient light, LG is working on a special lens called the “FreeForm Optic” lens. This lens module includes a “free curve” shape lens that allows more light to enter, resulting in improved photography capabilities. LG Innotek filed a patent in 2021 that describes the Optical module and other aspects of this new lens technique. The patent explains the need for a new optical system to compensate for the loss of brightness and improve resolution and illuminance, regardless of the camera’s position.

Advancements in UPC Development

LG Display is leading the development of UPC technology and aims to improve light transmission through the lens by 20% by 2023 and 40% by 2024. The company plans to use a transparent PI substrate instead of the normal PI substrate for UPC, further enhancing the technology’s capabilities.

Competition with Samsung Display

These advancements are crucial as Apple plans to integrate Face ID into Under Panel Cameras by 2026. LG is working diligently to improve the quality of UPC to compete with Samsung Display, which has already developed similar modules. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphones already feature Under Panel Cameras.

With LG’s ongoing efforts to overcome the challenges associated with UPC technology, the future of under-display cameras looks promising. Users can look forward to a more immersive display experience without compromising on image quality.
