OnePlus 12 & OnePlus Open Get Android 15 Beta 2 Update with Fixes

OnePlus has started distributing the second beta update for Android 15 to the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus Open smartphones.

This update is still in its early development stages, and the company advises that it’s “best suited for developers and other advanced users.” They caution against using it if you lack experience in software development or if you intend to use the device as your primary phone. Therefore, it’s recommended to download the update only if you’re comfortable with navigating potentially unstable software.

Focus on System Stability and Performance

According to the official announcement on the OnePlus forum, Android 15 Beta 2 aims to enhance system stability and performance. Additionally, it includes a fix for the Auto Pixelate function that wasn’t working during screenshot previews. OnePlus Open devices, in particular, will also benefit from a fix for issues encountered in split-screen mode.

    Known Issues

However, keep in mind that this is still a beta update and comes with some issues. OnePlus has identified several problems in the latest build.

For OnePlus 12 users, there may be issues when playing music, using Air Gestures, switching camera modes, and selecting icon styles in the Wallpapers & Style settings. There are also reports of probabilistic stability issues.

OnePlus Open users will face similar issues with music playback, Air Gestures, and icon styles. Additionally, recent task cards might not disappear after splitting the screen, photos may lack the ProXDR button, the booting animation might be incomplete, and the taskbar may display abnormally when using floating windows. You can review the full changelog and issues at this link.

    Participation in the Beta Program

Those interested in joining the beta program can find instructions on the OnePlus forum. If you choose to update, ensure that you back up your data beforehand, as the installation process will wipe the phone clean.

  • OnePlus 12 Adds ‘Repair Mode’ in Android 15 Beta 1, Needs Refinement

OnePlus 12 Adds ‘Repair Mode’ in Android 15 Beta 1, Needs Refinement

OnePlus has introduced the Android 15 Beta 1 update for its OnePlus 12 and OnePlus Open devices. While this initial Android 15 Beta isn't perfect, it does bring security enhancements and some minor user interface updates. Additionally, the OnePlus 12 has gained a new “Repair mode” feature with this update, designed to protect your privacy when sending your phone for repairs.

Typically, before sending your device to a technician, you need to back up and erase all your data. After the repair, you have to reinstall everything, which can be quite time-consuming.

    Repair Mode Needs Refinement

Those using the OnePlus 12 with the Android 15 Beta 1 update can access the Repair mode by navigating to Settings > System & updates > Repair mode. However, the feature still has some kinks to iron out.

When you select the Repair mode option, you'll need to complete a setup process that takes a minute or two, after which you'll be taken to the home screen as a separate user. Once you exit the repair mode, the phone will erase all data stored during the process and revert to its previous state.

    Similar Features from Competitors

We've seen similar features from Samsung and Pixel. Samsung introduced this functionality in OneUI 5 based on Android 13, naming it Maintenance mode. Google included a similar feature, called Repair mode, in its Pixel devices starting with Android 14 QPR1.

Although OnePlus’s version of Repair mode isn't as refined as those from Samsung and Google, it's still a valuable addition due to the time and effort it saves. Hopefully, OnePlus will address these minor issues before releasing the stable version.

  • OnePlus Executive Provides Insight into Four-Year Software Updates for OnePlus 12

OnePlus Executive Provides Insight into Four-Year Software Updates for OnePlus 12

OnePlus 12 was unveiled in 2023 and came with quite a lot of improvements compared to the OnePlus 11, particularly in the camera and battery department. However, when it comes to software updates, OnePlus is still not very active against other OEMs. Google Pixel 8 Pro and S24 Ultra will receive software updates for 7 years, however OnePlus 12 will only receive updates for 4-5 years.

OnePlus claims users don’t need long-term software support

For years, one of the worst things about Android devices compared to iOS devices has been the lack of long-term software updates. Apple has always continued to update iPhones for a long time. So much so that the iPhone X introduced in 2017 is still receiving security patches. Google and Samsung promise long software support, making them strong competition to Apple in the Android world.

OnePlus on the other hand, things are a little different. OnePlus’ president Kinder Liu explained in an exclusive interview with Tom’s Guide why OnePlus 12 will have 4 years of software support. Liu wants you to imagine that your phone looks like a sandwich!

    OnePlus 12

Kinder Liu explains why the OnePlus 12 won’t have 7 years of software support: ‘It’s not just software update policies that are important to the user; it’s the fluency of your phone’s user experience too.’

Liu also stated: ‘Imagine your phone is a sandwich,” he said. “Some manufacturers are now saying that the filling in their sandwich — their phone’s software — will still be good to eat in seven years’ time. But what they’re not telling you is that the bread in the sandwich — the user experience — might be moldy after four years. Suddenly a seven-year software update policy doesn’t matter, because the rest of your experience with the phone is terrible.‘

OnePlus’s president, Kinder Liu, points out with this statement that being able to use the phone for a long time is more important than long software support. Liu also emphasizes that tests simulating many years of use on OnePlus phones have been conducted and that OnePlus phones can last for a long time.

Kinder Liu makes a valid point, but phones released recently now feature far better technology, such as more durable UFS storage chips rather than eMMC. Furthermore, each new phone released has only slight upgrades over its predecessor nowadays, so OEMs would rather offer more software support and release phones less frequently.

  • Latest software update adds AI capabilities to OnePlus 11 and 12 models

Latest software update adds AI capabilities to OnePlus 11 and 12 models

While the Samsung Galaxy S24 series made headlines with its AI-powered features, OnePlus has quietly introduced its own AI offerings through a recent ColorOS update in China.

OnePlus Introduces AI Features in ColorOS Update

The update is rolled out to the OnePlus 12 and 11 models within the Chinese market. For the OnePlus 11, the firmware version is PHB110_14.0.0.403(CN01), and for the OnePlus 12, it is PJD110_14.0.0.405(CN01).

    New AI Features

Though not as extensive as Samsung’s offering, the update adds three generative AI features.

First up, there’s an AI Summarizer that can generate summaries of phone calls with key information like time, location, and other relevant details.

Next up is the AIGC Remover, an image editor that lets you erase unwanted people or objects from your photos, similar to AI photo editing on Samsung and Google Pixel devices.

Finally, OnePlus is offering an Article Summarizer feature that provides quick summaries of articles with just a single tap.

    Additional Updates

Beyond AI, the update also offers the ability to unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner without waking the screen. Users can now control QQ Music on Always-On Display, and there is an option to display the screen recording indicator in the status bar or a floating window.

The OnePlus 12’s update not only enhances Bluetooth, NFC, and WLAN network stability and compatibility but also addresses the issue of network signals in places with subway-like conditions. You can check the complete changelog of the update via the screenshot below.

    Possible Global Rollout

As aforementioned, currently, these AI features are only available on the Chinese version of ColorOS. However, as ColorOS shares a similar base with OxygenOS used globally, there’s a possibility they might be rolled out to the global OnePlus 12 and 11 models in the future.
