Samsung's dominance in the foldable phone market could soon face competition, as evidenced by a recent patent filing from Honor.
According to information available on China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) website, Honor has secured a patent for a new foldable phone design. This patent, submitted in 2022 and approved this month, showcases a flip phone model that might set Honor's device apart.
Unique Design
The most eye-catching feature of the patent drawings is the phone's angular corners. This sharp, futuristic design diverges from the typical rounded edges seen in most foldable phones, offering a more unique and modern look.
Display and Camera
While the patent does not divulge technical specifications, the illustrations indicate that the phone will feature a full-screen cover display and a lozenge-shaped cutout for the cameras, likely accommodating a dual-camera setup.
Previous Rumors
This isn't the first time rumors have circulated about a clamshell Honor phone. Well-known leaker Digital Chat Station has previously suggested that Honor’s flip phone will have a bezel-less external screen, describing the bezels as merely the "frame of the phone." This implies that Honor might aim to deliver an exceptional cover screen experience.
Potential Competitors
If these rumors are accurate, Honor's foldable phone could pose a significant challenge to Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6, expected to be unveiled in July 2024, and Motorola’s Razr 50 Ultra, which is anticipated to launch in the near future.
Possible Name
Though the official name of Honor’s flip phone remains undisclosed, it is speculated to be called "Honor Magic V Flip," aligning with the naming convention of Honor's existing foldable devices.
