Spectacles ’24: Try On Snap Inc.’s New Glasses Today

While it may not be a complete launch, Snap Inc. has revealed its newest version of Spectacles. Known as Spectacles ’24, this iteration utilizes the company’s expertise in augmented reality (AR) and incorporates a significant amount of artificial intelligence (AI). Spectacles ’24 is part of Snap Inc.’s ongoing mission to help users "Get closer with friends."

    Enhanced Features and Specifications

Powered by Snap OS, Spectacles ’24 comes with new features that previous versions lacked. Users can still take snaps, but these spectacles also function as a standalone AR headset, equipped with "My AI" for launching immersive applications. The AR capabilities are driven by two unspecified Snapdragon processors, two high-resolution full-color cameras, two infrared computer vision cameras, and a 6-axis inertial sensor. Additionally, the glasses support WiFi 6 and Bluetooth. Designed for outdoor use, they include lenses that automatically dim in bright light.

    Engaging User Experience

With a runtime of 45 minutes, users can explore a variety of experiences through their spectacles. Snap has integrated standard AR headset features such as AR gaming, web browsing, video viewing, and the ability to enhance the real world with 3D objects. Moreover, users can unlock extended functionality by connecting the glasses to the Spectacles App. This app allows users to mirror their phone screens or use their phones as controllers for Snap OS. To combat the loneliness sometimes associated with AR glasses, Spectacles ’24 enables others to view what the user is seeing via the linked phone.

    Focus on Mass Appeal

Snap Inc. is clearly committed to creating a wearable device that appeals to a broad audience. By offering Spectacles ’24 exclusively to developers through a $99 monthly subscription, the company aims to refine the product into a consumer-ready version with an attractive feature set. Since the initial launch of Spectacles, Snap Inc. has faced challenges such as low sales, surplus inventory, and high return rates. However, the innovative features of this new release could signal a positive shift for the future.

  • Garmin inReach Messenger Plus Launches with Picture and Voice Support

Garmin inReach Messenger Plus Launches with Picture and Voice Support

The introduction of a new device to the inReach lineup may appear somewhat unnecessary, especially since Garmin, the manufacturer, is now offering satellite services for Android devices. Nevertheless, the Messenger Plus could maintain its relevance for a while, thanks to its novel capability of sending non-text messages without needing mobile data or Wi-Fi.

    Features and Battery Life

Moreover, the Messenger Plus is rated IPX7 for waterproofing and boasts a battery life that can last up to 600 hours on a single charge, even when set to share location every 10 minutes.

Despite these advantages, it still requires a connected smartphone to send voice or photo messages through Garmin’s app. These messages can be forwarded directly to Garmin Response, which is a "24/7-staffed international emergency assistance coordination center," or sent to a user’s contacts. Additionally, the messages can include GPS coordinates.

    Subscription and Pricing

Ultimately, the device offers standalone satellite connectivity; however, this feature requires a monthly subscription starting at $14.99.

As for pricing, the inReach Messenger Plus communicator retails for $499.99 on garmin.com, while its predecessor, the Mini 2, is available for $359.79 on Amazon.

    New Feature: Garmin Share

The standout addition in this update is Garmin Share, which enables users to easily transfer workout and waypoint data between compatible Garmin devices. The changelog also mentions "improved race time predictions." While Garmin hasn’t provided much detail on this, users of other models, such as the Forerunner 955, have noted that the forecasts appear to be more favorable than before.

  • Google Wear OS Smartwatch with Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 Announced

Google Wear OS Smartwatch with Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 Announced

Google, Masimo, and Qualcomm are collaborating to create a reference smartwatch platform aimed at assisting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in launching new Google Wear OS smartwatches.

    Background of the Collaboration

This initiative follows the decision of several companies, including Fossil and Casio, to cease production of Wear OS watches. The planned wearable will integrate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 system-on-a-chip (SoC) along with health-tracking sensors from Masimo. The SoC features four ARM Cortex A53 processor cores, an Adreno 702 GPU, an LTE modem, and connectivity options including Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth 5.3. The biosensors are identical to those found in the forthcoming Masimo Freedom smartwatch, which was associated with the import ban on Apple Watches. Expected features of the reference smartwatch include hydration level tracking, blood oxygen saturation monitoring, respiration rate assessment, heart rate measurement, and step counting. However, it seems that capabilities for taking ECG or blood pressure readings will not be part of this offering.

    Customization for OEMs

Masimo states that while this will be a "standardized package," OEMs will have the freedom to customize the physical design of their smartwatch and the user interface. These smartwatches will be marketed under the respective OEM brands. As of now, it remains uncertain which companies will adopt this reference smartwatch platform, or when the initial wearables might be released.

  • New Affordable Apple Watch Coming Soon, Cheaper than SE

New Affordable Apple Watch Coming Soon, Cheaper than SE

Apple recently launched the second-generation Watch SE alongside the Series 8. Since that time, the smartwatch range has expanded with new models like the Watch Ultra 2, Series 9, and Series 10. Nevertheless, the third-generation SE has yet to be unveiled.

    Expectations for Watch SE 3

There was speculation that the Watch SE 3 would be announced during the September 9 event, but only the Series 10 was revealed. Additionally, no successor to the Watch Ultra 2 was presented, despite expectations for its debut at the iPhone 16 launch.

    Design and Pricing Insights

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, a trusted source, Apple is focusing on making the upcoming SE model more budget-friendly. Specifically, Gurman mentioned that the new SE smartwatch will likely use a plastic frame instead of aluminum. This change could not only reduce the overall cost but also allow for a variety of vibrant colors, reminiscent of the iPhone 5c.

Currently, the Watch SE 2 is the most affordable smartwatch Apple offers, with the 40 mm version priced at $250 and the 44 mm version at $280. There are also cellular options available for both sizes, which add an additional $50.

    Potential Hardware Updates

Furthermore, Gurman suggests that the new Apple Watch SE might receive a chipset upgrade. The existing model is equipped with the Apple S8 SiP, which is also found in the 2022 Series 8, but it remains uncertain whether the new budget-friendly smartwatch will feature the latest S10 chip. It might instead include the S9, which is used in the Series 9 (the GPS 45 mm version is currently priced at $329 on Amazon).
