  • G-SHOCK GA-V01 Watches Launch in the US with Shock-Release Feature

G-SHOCK GA-V01 Watches Launch in the US with Shock-Release Feature

    Key Takeaways

    1. The GA-V01 combines toughness with modern features while honoring G-SHOCK’s roots, inspired by Kikuo Ibe’s rubber ball prototype.
    2. The watch’s design includes a fused bezel and band, shock-absorbing glass, and a unique magnetic holding mechanism for the hands, enhancing durability.
    3. It features a hybrid analog-digital display with oversized hands, a metallic skeleton dial, and various functionalities such as world time and alarms.
    4. The GA-V01 is shock-resistant and water-resistant up to 200 meters, with a battery life of up to ten years.
    5. The retail price is $140, available on gshock.com and select retail locations.

Casio America has introduced the GA-V01, a new addition to the G-SHOCK lineup that combines toughness with modern features while honoring the brand’s roots. The watch takes inspiration from Kikuo Ibe’s initial rubber ball prototype, which was pivotal in creating the shock resistance that is now synonymous with G-SHOCK.

    G-SHOCK GA-V01 Overview

According to Casio, the narrative behind the GA-V01 unfolds in three stages. Initially, the rubber ball emerges from the lab, symbolizing the start of G-SHOCK. Next, it evolves through the concept of resilience. Lastly, it transforms into something innovative, driven by creativity and intention. The available colors—metallic silver, neon yellow, purple, and matte black—represent these stages.

    Design and Features

The watch features a fused bezel and band that create a unified structure, enhancing its robustness. It incorporates curved, shock-absorbing glass, large bumper-style markers, and angled side buttons, which contribute to its durability and striking appearance.

In a groundbreaking move for G-SHOCK, the GA-V01 employs a magnetic holding mechanism for the watch hands. Rather than being attached to a shaft, the minute hand is secured by magnetic forces. This unique design, referred to as the Shock Release Hand, improves impact absorption and allows for larger, more visible hands.

    Display and Specifications

The GA-V01 showcases a hybrid analog-digital display. It features a metallic skeleton dial, a full-screen LCD, oversized hands, and an additional indicator hand, all crafted to provide a sophisticated, layered look.

This watch is both shock-resistant and water-resistant up to 200 meters. It boasts several functionalities including world time for 48 cities, a stopwatch, a countdown timer, five daily alarms, a hand shift feature, and dual LED lighting. The battery is designed to last up to ten years.

    Pricing and Availability

The GA-V01 retails for $140, and it can be purchased on gshock.com, at the G-SHOCK Soho store, and other select retail locations.

  • New Casio G-Shock GBX-100S: Brushed Stainless Steel Bezel Revealed

New Casio G-Shock GBX-100S: Brushed Stainless Steel Bezel Revealed

    Key Takeaways

    1. New Design: The G-Shock GBX-100S models feature a transparent skeleton-style exterior and a brushed stainless-steel bezel, maintaining the classic G-Lide square shape.

    2. Color Options: Two new color variants are introduced: a black-and-blue split strap and an all-black version.

    3. Features: The watches retain the high-contrast MIP LCD and include standard surf data, fitness tracking, and compatibility with the G-Shock Move app.

    4. Environmental Considerations: There may be a bioplastic strap option, although the case remains regular resin, suggesting marketing rather than significant material changes.

    5. Release Timeline: The watches are expected to launch in May in Japan, with a possible price around $190, making them a fashionable addition to the GBX series.

Just a few weeks after we first shared that Casio was developing a new skeleton-style version of the G-Shock GBX-100, we have now gotten clearer visuals of what to expect. The most recent images, likely intended for promotional use in Japan, showcase two GBX-100S models. These models maintain the classic square shape of the original G-Lide series but add a refreshing “summer” vibe to both their design and materials.

    Design Changes

The updated variants keep the essential GBX-100 look but replace the solid resin case with a transparent skeleton-style exterior, complemented by a brushed stainless-steel bezel. This pairing is something that hasn’t been seen in Casio’s surf-oriented collection thus far. While we were aware of the design changes, we were not informed that there would be two new color options. One variant boasts a striking black-and-blue split strap, while the other opts for an all-black aesthetic. Both models keep the signature G-Lide square shape and seem to preserve the recognizable high-contrast MIP LCD, which shows tide information, moon phases, and sunrise/sunset timings synced through Bluetooth.

    Features and Functionality

As per the images, the software user interface appears to be the same. The watches will include standard surf data along with fitness tracking capabilities through the G-Shock Move app. Even with the design enhancements, the main features still relate back to the GBX-100TT-2JF model.

One of the images suggests that there might be a bioplastic strap involved, although the case still seems to be made from regular resin. The environmental aspect could be more of a marketing strategy rather than a significant material shift—though Casio has made more substantial efforts in previous G-Lide and Surfrider releases.

    Release and Pricing

A launch is anticipated in May in Japan, with broader availability following shortly after. Pricing details have not yet been revealed, but if Casio maintains the approximate $190 price point, this could turn out to be the most fashionable (and sought-after) GBX variant to date.

  • New Casio AQ-S820 Solar Analog-Digital Watches in 3 Variants

New Casio AQ-S820 Solar Analog-Digital Watches in 3 Variants

    Key Takeaways

    1. Casio is hinting at a comeback of the AQ series with the new AQ-S820 models, available in black, olive green, and beige.
    2. The AQ series started in 1982 with the AQ-500, designed for everyday users seeking solar-powered analog-digital watches at an affordable price.
    3. The AQ-S820 maintains a familiar design with features like 100-meter water resistance, five alarms, and an LED backlight, but lacks advanced features found in newer models.
    4. The release feels underwhelming for 2025, as it mainly offers color updates rather than significant advancements in technology or design.
    5. Pricing is expected to be below G-Shock models, likely in the $60 to $80 range, with further details on regional releases still to come.

Casio seems to be hinting at the comeback of a less prominent series: the AQ-S820. Recently, Casioblog shared that three new variants of this solar-powered analog-digital watch have emerged, available in black, olive green, and beige, with “Tough Solar” prominently displayed. Although it isn’t part of the G-Shock lineup, this series shares a similar design vibe, though it lacks the shock resistance and high-end casing.

A Look Back at the AQ Series

If you’re curious, the AQ series isn’t exactly a new concept. The inaugural model, the AQ-500, was released by Casio in 1982. The brand aimed to blend analog aesthetics with digital features at a more affordable price. It was made for everyday users – those in need of a dependable watch with solar charging, but without the extras or style of a G-Shock.

A Fresh Take on a Familiar Design

It appears that Casio is reviving this series, or at least giving it a refresh with new color choices and minor design tweaks. The overall shape remains recognizable, featuring bold screws on the bezel, a clear analog-digital hybrid face, and labels around the edge for its main buttons. Expect to see features like 100-meter water resistance, five alarms, LED backlight, and world time, based on the specifications of the original model.

    Familiar Territory for Casio

That being said, the new AQ-S820 doesn’t really venture into new territory. It feels somewhat underwhelming for a release in 2025, especially since even Casio’s lower-end models have begun incorporating Bluetooth syncing or updating their design aesthetics. What we have here is essentially a simple reissue with new colors – military green (AQ-S820W-3B), tactical tan (AQ-S820W-5A), and an all-black option (AQ-S820W-1A). This is great for those who missed out before, but perhaps not so thrilling for those already immersed in Casio’s offerings.

It’s still uncertain whether Casio plans to promote this as part of a larger retro reissue strategy or just update its standard collection quietly. Though pricing details are not yet confirmed, based on previous trends, it should be priced below G-Shock models, likely in the $60 to $80 range.

We’ll monitor for regional release dates and any potential changes to the features list.

    4. The watch tracks dive time, surface rest time, and can save up to 30 dive entries, with Bluetooth connectivity for remote settings adjustment.

    5. It features automatic time setting in specific regions, a Tough Solar power system, and is priced at approximately $4,079, available starting May 23.

Casio has introduced a brand-new G-Shock diver’s timepiece, the MR-G Frogman MRG-BF1000RG, inspired by the largest frog in the world, the Goliath (Conraua goliath). The high-end MR-G features various shades of green along with design elements taken from the Goliath frog.

    Rugged Design for Diving

This sturdy watch is built using more than 70 individual parts, featuring a locking screw-down crown, protective cladding, and cushioning made from fluorine rubber to safeguard the main module. The titanium case, bezel, and case back have been specially treated with titanium carbide and hardened to enhance their strength, enabling them to withstand depths of up to 200 meters (656 ft.) underwater.

    Unique Sapphire Glass

The center of the screw-on case back showcases a vivid green vapor-deposited sapphire glass resembling the frog’s eyes. This sapphire enhances the watch’s ability to receive radio time signals globally, outperforming a metal case back in this regard.

    Enhanced Visibility for Divers

The front of the watch is safeguarded by a dome-shaped sapphire glass with internal anti-reflective coatings, ensuring easy reading of the dive time and surface rest time indicators. The hands and hour markers are coated with extra-thick Neobrite phosphorescent paint and can also be illuminated by the high-intensity LED Super Illuminator for excellent visibility under any diving conditions.

For divers, the watch tracks dive time in increments of 1 second for up to 2 hours and monitors surface rest time for 24 hours. It can save up to 30 dive entries for future reference. Additionally, users can connect a smartphone via Bluetooth to adjust settings remotely.

    Automatic Time Setting

The watch automatically sets the time when in regions like China, Japan, Europe, or the US. Its Tough Solar watch face can keep it powered continuously, with a full charge lasting up to five months. The Frogman comes with standard features like a tide graph, dual-time, stopwatch, and alarm.

This feature-rich watch is set to be available for purchase starting May 23, with a suggested retail price of 572,000 yen (~$4,079). Pricing for other regions has yet to be revealed. It’s important to note that Casio watches at this level of specifications are usually sold through the company’s official website and high-end watch retailers, not through the Casio store on Amazon US.

    4. The expected price in Japan is approximately ¥27,500 (~$190), with a release timeframe set for June.
    5. International availability details are not confirmed, but G-Shock typically launches new models in broader markets shortly after the Japan debut.

The G-Shock GBX-100 series by Casio is about to welcome a fresh edition, and this one is more suited for beach vibes, at least in terms of looks. A new surf-oriented digital watch model is expected to drop this summer, featuring a skeleton design, according to the well-known Japanese blog, Great G-Shock World.

    Surfing Features

The GBX-100 has been promoted as an essential tool for surfers, offering features such as tide graphs, moon phases, and sunrise/sunset timings, all retrieved via Bluetooth from a vast database of over 3,000 coastal sites. It boasts a high-contrast MIP LCD for better visibility under bright conditions and incorporates standard G-Lide features like impressive 20-bar water resistance and a robust resin case.

    Design Changes

Sources indicate that the new version won’t significantly change the internal features – it will still maintain the same tide-tracking interface and probably stick to the GBX-100TT-2JF foundation. Instead, it will replace the traditional solid colors with a transparent case and strap, a style G-Shock usually reserves for special summer editions like the recently unveiled GA-2100BM collection. This design is likely to catch the eye of seasonal buyers looking for something sleek, relaxed, and a bit different from the usual solid two-tone styles that the series is known for.

    Pricing and Availability

For similar models, the current cost in Japan is approximately ¥27,500 (~$190), and although there are no confirmed details about international availability yet, G-Shock often launches these models in broader markets within weeks of their debut in Japan. Currently, the expected release timeframe is June.
