  • Hydro-Modified Casio Watch: Surviving Deep-Sea Pressure Under $20

Hydro-Modified Casio Watch: Surviving Deep-Sea Pressure Under $20

The Casio F91W is a digital timepiece that has not changed much since it was first launched in 1989. Known for its low price, dependability, and minimalistic look, this watch has gained a reputation over the years. Yet, various experiments and modifications have taken it far beyond what it was originally designed for, especially with the hydro-modification technique.

    Hydro-Mod Process Explained

The hydro-modification involves injecting the watch case with mineral oil. This process removes any air pockets that may exist inside the case. As a result, the watch’s resistance to pressure is significantly enhanced as it counteracts the external water pressure—something typically found in high-end diving watches. Unlike regular watches, which depend on specialized casings and seals to withstand pressure at depth, the hydro-mod allows a simple watch like the Casio F91W to endure extreme underwater conditions.

    Testing the Limits

In a 2023 experiment, a hydro-modded Casio F91W was attached to the manipulator arm of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that was then sent underwater. The aim was to test the limits of the watch’s durability, as the ROV went down to an astonishing depth of 4,950 meters (16,240 feet). Normally, an unmodified F91W would probably fail due to case deformation caused by pressure, but thanks to the hydro-mod method, the watch functioned perfectly during the descent.

    Impressive Results

At a depth of nearly 5,000 meters, the pressure on the watch reached over 7,200 pounds per square inch, which is far more than any unmodified Casio can handle. The hydro-mod is attractive because it’s simple to do. By filling the watch with oil, it stops moisture from getting in, balances pressure, and improves visibility underwater by minimizing internal reflections. The process is also quite affordable, needing just some basic tools and a steady hand. You can find out more about this method here, or check out the video below.

Keep in mind that this modification doesn’t transform the F91W into a genuine dive watch. It still doesn’t have an ISO dive certification, luminous indicators, or a depth gauge. Nevertheless, it proves the remarkable durability of Casio’s design when used with straightforward engineering techniques. Such experiments showcase how an ordinary digital watch like the Casio F91W can exceed expectations.

Amazfit Active 2 Premium Smartwatch Launch Delayed News

Amazfit has postponed the launch of its new Active 2 Premium smartwatch in the United States. This model, along with two other standard Active 2 versions, was introduced back in January. These smartwatches are successors to the original Active model, which debuted at the end of 2023.

  • Casio AE-1600H Series Watch Launches in Europe with Long Battery Life

Casio AE-1600H Series Watch Launches in Europe with Long Battery Life

The Casio AE-1600H-1AV and AE-1600H-8BV timepieces are now up for grabs in Europe. Earlier this year, these models made their debut in the US, where they go by the names AE1600H-1AV and AE1600H-8BV. These watches are now being showcased at Casio stores across several countries, including the Netherlands, France, and Italy.

    Practical and Robust Design

The AE-1600H series is a new lineup that Casio labels as “practical” and “strong”. The AE-1600H-1AV features a standard display, showcasing dark numbers against a light backdrop, all encased in a black resin shell that matches its strap. On the other hand, the AE-1600H-8BV sports an inverted display, presenting light numbers on a dark surface, complemented by a gray resin casing.

    Impressive Features

Among the key attributes is an LED backlight that can be activated via a centrally placed button, which some users might find more convenient compared to the usual side button. This watch is water-resistant up to 10 meters, and Casio claims the timepiece can last for up to ten years on a single CR2032 battery. Additional functions include dual time zone displays, a stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second, a countdown timer, and five alarms. • Casio MTS-S100 Series: Tough Solar Analog Metal Watches with Sapphire Crystal

Casio MTS-S100 Series: Tough Solar Analog Metal Watches with Sapphire Crystal

We recently talked about the upcoming ‘Master of G’ series watches from Casio, which will be launching on February 1. In addition to that, it looks like Casio is getting ready to introduce a new collection of standard models. New pictures and product pages have shown the forthcoming MTS-S100 series. Although the company hasn’t provided a specific release date for these models, only mentioning January 2025, the images and related details hint at a range of solar-powered watches made with high-quality materials and a pretty simple design.

    Model Details

The series includes the MTS-S100D-1AV, MTS-S100L-1AV, MTS-S100D-5A, MTS-S100D-2AV, and MTS-S100D-3AV. From what we can see, all these models come with Tough Solar technology, a sapphire crystal that has an anti-glare coating to resist scratches, and a seconds hand—features that are usually found in more expensive watches. The case sizes are 47 x 41.7 x 9.5 mm, making them quite compact and ideal for everyday wear.

    Design and Features

These watches showcase a vapor deposition gradient dial, which includes colors like green, blue, gray, and reddish-brown. Vapor deposition is a process where materials are vaporized and then deposited onto a surface, creating a smooth color transition. The versions with stainless-steel bracelets have a brushed finish, and at least one model—the MTS-S100L-1AV—seems to have a leather strap instead.

Water resistance is rated at 50 meters, so these watches are fine for everyday splashes but shouldn’t be used for heavy water activities. Thanks to the Tough Solar technology, they can recharge using light from the environment.
