  • Sony Xperia 1 VII Beats Xiaomi Poco F7 Ultra in Benchmark Tests

Sony Xperia 1 VII Beats Xiaomi Poco F7 Ultra in Benchmark Tests

    Key Takeaways

    1. No official announcement from Sony about the Xperia 1 VI replacement, but leaks suggest a new model, the Xperia 1 VII, is coming.
    2. The Xperia 1 VII has been spotted in Geekbench tests, identified as model XQ-FS54, running on Android 15.
    3. It features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, providing a significant performance boost over its predecessor.
    4. The device retains 12 GB of RAM, but still outperforms many recent models in benchmark tests, although it lags behind top flagship smartphones.
    5. The Xperia 1 VII is expected to be a strong competitor, but it must improve further to match current high-end devices.

There is still no official announcement from Sony regarding the upcoming replacement for the Xperia 1 VI (currently priced at $1,039 on Amazon). However, there are growing signs that a new model is on the way. Recently, leaked images of the rumored Xperia 1 VII have surfaced, and it seems to have appeared at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States.

    Early Benchmarks

The newly rumored device has now made its first appearance in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests. Identified by the model number XQ-FS54, it operates on Android 15, which Sony has been actively rolling out to its devices over the past few months. The benchmark results also suggest that it features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, confirmed by the CPU identifiers and the clusters displayed.

    RAM and Performance

Sadly, it appears that Sony has decided to stick with 12 GB of RAM for this flagship model for yet another generation. However, the upgrade from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to the Snapdragon 8 Elite alone allows the Xperia 1 VII to surpass its predecessor by approximately 30% in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core benchmarks. With scores of 2,967 and 9,017, the Xperia 1 VII also outperforms several recent models such as the Poco F7 Ultra, Find N5, and Realme GT7 Pro. That said, it still falls behind other leading flagship models like the OnePlus 13, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Xiaomi 15 Ultra at this early stage.

    Conclusion

In short, while the Xperia 1 VII is shaping up to be a strong contender in the market, it will need to make significant strides to compete with the current high-end smartphones. The excitement surrounding its release continues to grow, as tech enthusiasts eagerly await more details and the official launch.

    5. The Find X8s+, recently launched by Oppo, showcases the potential for slim designs with high-end specs, including a 6,000mAh battery in an 8mm body.

Samsung is set to reveal the Galaxy S25 Edge on May 13 worldwide, featuring an impressively slim design of just 5.84mm. This launch is believed to be a strategic effort to outpace Apple’s soon-to-be-released iPhone 17 Air, which is rumored to have a similarly sleek appearance. In reaction, various Chinese smartphone manufacturers are gearing up to step into the ultra-thin phone market to compete not only with the Galaxy S25 Edge but also the iPhone 17 Air. Oppo, for example, is already marketing its Reno and Find X series as Android options in place of the iPhone. A recent Weibo post by leaker Digital Chat Station suggests that Oppo is developing a direct rival to the iPhone 17 Air and S25 Edge.

    Oppo’s Potential New Phone

Oppo might be working on a flagship phone that is ultra-thin to challenge the iPhone 17 Air. Comments on the Weibo post show users sharing their hopes for the new device, like a large battery, a periscope camera, and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor—all contained within a slim, lightweight frame that fits the “Air” name.

    Challenges of Design

It may be tough to fit all high-end features, including a large battery, into a device measuring just 6mm to 7mm thick, but Oppo could still make it work. The recently launched Find X8s+ provides a compelling example of achieving a slim profile while maintaining a robust battery and top-tier hardware.

The Find X8s+, available only in China, flaunts a 6.59-inch OLED 1.5K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, alongside a 6,000mAh battery that supports 80W charging, all within a body weighing 198 grams and measuring a mere 8mm thick. 2. Performance Specs: The Xperia 1 VII features a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 12GB of RAM, and runs on Android 15, scoring 2,967 in single-core and 9,017 in multi-core Geekbench tests.

    3. Design Features: The phone maintains Sony’s tall design style, measuring 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.5mm, with a flat frame and buttons positioned on the right side.

    4. Unique Hardware Elements: It includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD/SIM card slot, dual front-facing speakers, and a vertical rear camera setup with a 48MP main sensor and two 12MP lenses.

    5. Anticipation for Launch: An official launch date for the Xperia 1 VII is not yet announced, but the circulation of images and benchmark scores suggests an announcement is imminent.

Sony’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VII, has recently surfaced on Geekbench, shortly after its actual photos were leaked. The Geekbench entry corresponds to a device with the model number XQ-FS54.

    Model Identification

While the listing does not mention the phone’s name directly, the model number fits Sony’s naming conventions for European models. Therefore, it is likely that this is a European version of the Xperia 1 VII.

    Performance Specs

The device is seen to be operating on a new Qualcomm processor, which is not explicitly named, but it includes an Adreno 830 GPU and a CPU that can reach speeds of 4.32GHz. This combination suggests that it is Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite, which was speculated to be in the Xperia 1 VII.

The benchmark results indicate that the device has 12GB of RAM and runs on Android 15. It scored 2,967 points in the single-core tests and achieved 9,017 in the multi-core tests. These numbers align with expectations for the latest Snapdragon chipset, though they mostly confirm that the hardware is currently being tested.

    Design Features

Images that were leaked and hands-on photos of the phone reveal that Sony is sticking closely to its familiar design style. The Xperia 1 VII maintains its characteristic tall shape, reportedly measuring 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.5mm, with a thickness of 11mm at its thickest point, which is due to the camera bump.

The design includes a flat frame, with all the buttons—power, volume, and a dedicated shutter button—located on the right side, while the left side remains empty.

    Unique Hardware Elements

The Xperia 1 VII keeps some hardware features that many flagship phones have phased out, such as a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD/SIM card slot located at the bottom. It also includes dual front-facing speakers, a USB-C port, and a vertical rear camera arrangement featuring three sensors.

The main camera is rumored to be a 48MP sensor with optical image stabilization, accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens that provides variable zoom ranging from 70mm to 200mm.

    Anticipation for Launch

At this time, Sony has yet to announce a launch date for its next flagship device. However, with real-world images and benchmark scores now circulating, an official announcement is likely on the horizon.

  • LG Display Unveils Blue Phosphorescent OLED Prototypes for Smartphones

LG Display Unveils Blue Phosphorescent OLED Prototypes for Smartphones

    Key Takeaways

    1. LG Display has developed OLED panels with phosphorescent blue pixels that are stable and consume less power.
    2. Current blue pixel technology is less effective, requiring larger pixels and having a shorter lifespan compared to red and green pixels.
    3. The new design uses a hybrid approach, combining a fluorescent layer with a phosphorescent layer to reduce power usage by 15%.
    4. This innovation could extend smartphone battery life without increasing battery size, despite some longevity trade-offs.
    5. LG plans to present this technology at Display Week 2025, scheduled for May 11 to 16 in San Jose.

LG Display has shown it can produce OLED panels featuring phosphorescent blue pixels on standard manufacturing equipment that are just as stable as the OLED panels we commonly use today, all while consuming less power. This breakthrough could allow smartphone manufacturers to extend usage times without needing to enlarge battery sizes.

    Blue Pixel Challenges

At present, blue pixel technology is not very effective. It requires a bigger pixel to emit the same light as smaller red and green pixels. Additionally, blue pixels have a shorter lifespan compared to their red and green counterparts. The larger size of the blue pixel can also lead to strange text artifacts that can be seen even with clever pixel arrangements.

    A New Approach

Switching to phosphorescent blue instead of the traditional fluorescent blue in current OLED displays can lower power usage by about 25% while enhancing light output, though it does compromise longevity. LG has cleverly merged a longer-lasting fluorescent layer, which has a low emissive efficiency at 25%, with a brighter phosphorescent layer that achieves a high emissive efficiency of 100%. This results in a hybrid OLED panel that consumes 15% less power.

    Future Prospects

Even if the power savings aren’t as significant as those of a panel made solely with phosphorescent materials, this hybrid tandem OLED panel could still provide extra hours of battery life for smartphones without needing to expand battery size. LG intends to showcase this new technology at Display Week 2025, set to take place from May 11 to 16 in San Jose.

  • Oppo and OnePlus Set to Release Ultra-Slim iPhone 17 Rival

Oppo and OnePlus Set to Release Ultra-Slim iPhone 17 Rival

    Key Takeaways

    1. Apple plans to release the first-generation 17 Air as a high-end option alongside the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in 2025.
    2. The 17 Air is expected to be very slim, with special buttons and no SIM-card slot.
    3. Other companies, like Oppo, may soon enter the ultra-thin smartphone market, potentially diminishing the 17 Air’s uniqueness.
    4. Oppo may introduce a non-foldable flagship to compete with the 17 Air, building on their experience with ultra-thin designs.
    5. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could also compete with the 17 Air and Oppo’s alternatives in the near future.

Apple is said to be planning to release the first-generation 17 Air as a high-end choice alongside the regular iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in 2025. It is expected to be incredibly slim, requiring special buttons and lacking a SIM-card slot.

    Predictions on Competition

If these forecasts turn out to be correct, the 17 Air may not have a unique spot in the market for long, as other companies could follow suit. Notably, the well-informed leaker Digital Chat Station has suggested that the Android maker Oppo could also jump into this trend soon.

    Oppo’s Moves

One might argue that Oppo already has an “ultra-thin flagship” with the Find N5, which is now sold in Europe through TradingShenzhen. However, according to the source, Oppo is likely to introduce a non-foldable version to compete directly with Apple’s innovative iPhone.

Oppo has a track record in this field and could potentially design a larger battery for their alternative to the 17 Air, as shown by the successful release of the 13T from their well-known brand OnePlus.

    Future Competition

The Oppo ‘Air-killer’ might encounter increased competition from the supposedly similar Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which is expected to launch soon.
