On the desktop front, the GeForce RTX 5080 doesn’t show a significant speed increase compared to its previous model, mainly because their specifications are quite similar. However, on the laptop front, we can look forward to impressive advancements, particularly for high-end versions. A leaked 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark on Bilibili confirms this.

Laptop Performance Boost

The GeForce RTX 5080 laptop achieves a score of 21,948 points in the graphics category. This marks a 24% boost compared to the GeForce RTX 4080 laptop, which has an average score of 17,601 points based on our benchmark data. That’s a neat 24% rise. This aligns with a previous Geekbench score that indicated a 20% increase.

Almost on Par with RTX 4090

Essentially, it delivers near-RTX 4090 laptop performance within an xx80 tier SKU. Unfortunately, we can’t make the same claim for the desktop versions this time around. Even though the GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 4080 laptop models have an equal number of CUDA cores (7,680), the former comes with 16 GB of GDDR7, while the latter has 12 GB of GDDR6X. However, laptop variants will be limited by power constraints, as is usually the case.

Valve Addresses AMD RDNA 4 Rumors and SteamOS Gaming Project

It’s widely known that Valve is making strides in enhancing the AMD Mesa drivers for Linux. However, some news reports from earlier this week suggested that the latest driver updates could indicate that Valve might be developing a competitor to the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5 (currently priced at $449 on Amazon).

Rumors vs. Reality

As we talked about back then, these speculations seem to be misinterpreting Valve’s real goals in improving Linux drivers for AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture. Even though Valve collaborated with AMD for the Steam Deck, Pierre-Loup Griffais, a prominent developer for the Steam Deck, provided some clarity regarding the recent enhancements to the RDNA 4 drivers:

…we’ve [Valve] done pre-release Mesa Vulkan work on every AMD architecture since Vega because they have kindly lent us hardware, so there’s not much to read into that.

What’s Next?

To put it simply, the rumors surrounding AMD RDNA 4-based devices can be placed in the same category as last month’s assertion that AMD had verified a Ryzen Z2 update for the Steam Deck. At this moment, there’s no solid proof of new hardware from Valve that would operate on SteamOS. Instead, there have been some suggestions about a device with the codename ‘Fremont’, along with potential images showing designs for a Deckard controller and a Steam Controller 2.

Lenovo has announced that the Steam OS version of the Legion Go S won’t be available for a while. In contrast, the Windows version has been available for pre-order worldwide for nearly a month now, featuring the same hardware as the SteamOS version. Bazzite, a well-known alternative to SteamOS, supports Lenovo’s newest gaming handheld. YouTuber ETA Prime recently tested it in a new video, showcasing its capabilities.

Performance and Pricing

According to Bazzite’s installation page, the Legion Go S operates on the same version of Bazzite as the current Legion Go (priced at $549.99 on Amazon). This means it already offers full TDP control and RGB settings. ETA Prime noticed significant performance improvements when using Bazzite on the Legion Go S compared to the standard Windows 11 setup.

Moreover, the Legion Go S is reported to deliver a more seamless gaming experience than the Steam Deck OLED, thanks to its advanced AMD Ryzen Z2 APU and the option for 32 GB of RAM. Although the packaging clearly stated it was the right graphics card, Nvidia had labeled the housing as an RTX 5090. Unfortunately, tests later revealed that the GPU inside was indeed an RTX 5080.

When EssDee3D shared a photo of the incorrectly labeled GPU in the LinusTechTips subreddit, it was met with some doubt. Previously, fans eagerly anticipated the next generation of graphics cards, but their excitement has significantly waned following the disappointing releases of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. Although we can’t influence the stock situation surrounding the RTX 50 series or enhance the performance of the RTX 5080, there is still hope for the RX 9070/XT, which seem to be promising options.

Upcoming AMD Cards

AMD has confirmed that the new RDNA 4 graphics cards, likely the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, will hit the shelves in early March. Nonetheless, no specific date was provided during this announcement. However, thanks to Uniko’s Hardware, we now have some leaked information regarding the release date.

Release Date Leaks

The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT are expected to arrive on March 6. Notably, Nvidia plans to release the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti on February 20, which means Team Red is set to launch their RX 9070/XT approximately 15 days later. This is the extent of the information available from Uniko’s Hardware. We still don’t know when AMD will present the RX 9000 series or the specifics of the review embargo.
