    5. Both devices feature a 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display, with different processors and battery capacities.

Ever since the unveiling of the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds, chatter about their costs and pre-order info has been spreading on the internet. Microsoft and Asus have announced that both devices are set to release on October 16, but up until now, there was no news about when pre-orders would start. It appears that the wait is almost over.

    Pre-Order Tease

Asus has hinted on Facebook that pre-orders for the ROG Xbox Ally will be “dropping soon.” A countdown is set to finish at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT today (September 25). So, in just a few hours, fans eager for the new handhelds can secure their units, and the price details will be revealed. The post specifically talks about the white ROG Xbox Ally but doesn’t mention the ROG Xbox Ally X, suggesting that pre-orders for the more advanced model might begin a day or two later.

    Facebook Update

This Facebook update was noticed by The Verge, but it appears that it’s not shown on Asus ROG’s US account. The Singapore account does feature the post, but only as a story.

    Pricing Speculations

Speculation and leaks have suggested what the prices for the two handhelds might be. Last month, it was indicated that the ROG Xbox Ally could be priced between $500 and $600. Best Buy, at one point, mistakenly listed a price of $550 for the standard model and $900 for the Xbox ROG Ally X. Recently, a UK retailer’s leaked ad showed the non-X model priced at £500 (about $667 USD).

    Awaiting Official Confirmation

The ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2A processor and a 60Wh battery, while the ROG Xbox Ally X has the Ryzen Z2 Extreme with an 80Wh battery. • Xiaomi 17 Pro & Pro Max: Retro Gaming Handheld Console Cases

Xiaomi 17 Pro & Pro Max: Retro Gaming Handheld Console Cases

    Key Takeaways

    1. Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max to replace the Xiaomi 15 series, aiming to compete with Apple and Google.
    2. The Xiaomi 17 features a standard design, while the Pro models include unique secondary displays for notifications and camera use.
    3. A special Retro Handheld Console Case allows the Pro models to be used as retro gaming devices, featuring dedicated gaming buttons.
    4. The Retro Handheld Console Case has a built-in 200 mAh battery, lasting up to 40 days, but it disables wireless charging for the phones.
    5. The Retro Handheld Console Case is priced at CNY 299 (about $42) in China, with no confirmation on availability in other markets.

Earlier today, Xiaomi unveiled not only the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Pro but also the bigger Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. To sum it up, all three smartphones take the place of the Xiaomi 15 Pro and Xiaomi 15 (which is currently priced at $890 on Amazon), as Xiaomi aims to position its top-tier lineup to compete with Apple and Google.

    Design and Features

The Xiaomi 17 is a standard candybar-style smartphone, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max come packed with unique features. As discussed in earlier coverage, both of these models showcase small secondary displays that surround their rear camera setups. Xiaomi primarily promotes these secondary displays for showing incoming notifications or serving as camera viewfinders.

    Retro Gaming Experience

In an interesting twist, Xiaomi has designed a special case that allows the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max to function as retro gaming handhelds. Known as the Retro Handheld Console Case, this protective accessory includes ABXY buttons, a circular d-pad, along with start and select buttons. Xiaomi also added a dedicated power button that acts as a game launcher shortcut without the need to activate the main display of the Xiaomi 17 Pro or Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

    Battery Life and Pricing

Additionally, the Retro Handheld Console Case is equipped with a 200 mAh built-in battery, which Xiaomi claims can last up to 40 days on a single charge. However, it’s important to mention that this case prevents the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max from being charged wirelessly. The Retro Handheld Console Case is priced at CNY 299 (approximately $42) in China. Unfortunately, it remains uncertain whether Xiaomi intends to sell the Retro Handheld Console Case in other markets.

  • Sony Reports PS5 Sales Make It Most Successful PlayStation Yet

Sony Reports PS5 Sales Make It Most Successful PlayStation Yet

    Key Takeaways

    1. Hideaki Nishino claims the PS5 era has surpassed the PS4 and all previous PlayStation consoles in success.
    2. Sony reported $136 billion in sales since launching the PS5, with $13 billion in profits compared to $9 billion from PS4 products.
    3. Concerns about future PS5 sales arise after recent price hikes, but past interest in hardware remains strong.
    4. Hardware revenue increased by 4.7%, software sales by 11%, and network services income by 8.3% over a recent three-month period.
    5. The PlayStation Store is a dominant marketplace despite competition, but consumers are feeling the financial strain from high game and accessory prices.

At the Tokyo Game Show, Sony’s Hideaki Nishino made a strong statement regarding the present PlayStation generation. He claimed that the PS5 era has outshined the PS4 and all previous PlayStation consoles. Notably, Geoff Keighley shared on social media that Sony reported $136 billion in sales since launching its latest gaming systems.

    Sales or Profits?

There seems to be some misunderstanding about whether Nishino was referring to operating profits or sales figures. Nevertheless, the numbers match the revenue from hardware, software, and subscriptions that Sony and Push Square reported in June. In terms of profits, Sony managed to earn $13 billion during the PS5 era, as opposed to $9 billion from PS4 products. Over the years, revenue and operating profits have increased, except for the PS3, which unfortunately faced a $4 billion loss.

    Concerns Over Future Sales

After the recent price hikes for the PS5, some gamers are doubtful about future console sales. However, prior to the latest news, Sony succeeded in keeping consumers interested in their hardware.

An analysis conducted by GamesIndustry.biz looked at a three-month span ending June 30th, comparing it to the previous year’s results. Hardware revenue, which includes PS5 sales, went up by 4.7%, software sales increased by 11%, and income from network services rose by 8.3%. Even revenue from physical games recorded growth. Digital software has become much more favored than in prior PlayStation console generations.

    Dominance in the Marketplace

Despite accusations of monopolization, the PlayStation Store has established itself as a leading marketplace. Additionally, some controversial live-service PS5 games have shown to be steady earners for the company.

As the adoption of pricier Xbox consoles slows down, PlayStation doesn’t face much competition outside of the handheld market. Still, consumers are feeling the financial strain, with expensive AAA games and accessories compounding the impact of PS5 price increases.

  • Nintendo Shadow Drops Fire Emblem Shadows Mobile Game with Social Deduction

Nintendo Shadow Drops Fire Emblem Shadows Mobile Game with Social Deduction

    Key Takeaways

    1. New Gameplay Focus: Fire Emblem Shadows shifts from traditional tactical RPG gameplay to social deduction mechanics, where players must identify a traitor within their team.

    2. Downloadable for Free: The game is available for free on both Android and iOS, with optional microtransactions.

    3. Simplified Mechanics: Gameplay involves automatic character movement and combat, allowing players to select weapons and targets for magic spells.

    4. Future Mobile Gaming Plans: Nintendo is committed to expanding its mobile gaming presence, as stated by President Shuntaro Furukawa, with previous titles like Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

    5. Upcoming Switch Title: A new Switch 2 game, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, is set to release in 2026, continuing the legacy of the series with traditional turn-based gameplay.

Fire Emblem enthusiasts were taken by surprise when Nintendo unexpectedly revealed a mobile game. While many games in the series focus on tactical RPG gameplay, Fire Emblem Shadows shifts its focus to social deduction. The game can be downloaded for free on both Android and iOS, with optional microtransactions available.

    Press Release and Trailer

The announcement of Fire Emblem Shadows came through a press release that lacked detailed information. However, a two-minute trailer is now available in the Nintendo Today! app, which outlines the game’s concept. Players join teams of three and choose to be either a disciple of light or a disciple of shadow. The objective is to vote and identify the traitor within the team. Whether players guess correctly or not will affect the outcomes of future battles.

    Gameplay Mechanics

Early reviews suggest that the gameplay is simplified, as characters engage in combat and movement automatically without needing player commands. Users can, however, select weapons and choose targets for magic spells. The unique social deduction elements seem to draw inspiration from games such as Among Us, providing a fresh twist on the familiar Fire Emblem formula.

    Future Plans for Mobile Gaming

Despite the low-key launch of Fire Emblem Shadows, Nintendo has vowed to increase its efforts in mobile gaming. Earlier this year, President Shuntaro Furukawa expressed an eagerness to broaden the company’s presence beyond consoles like the Switch 2. Some notable previous releases include Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete from 2024 and Fire Emblem Heroes from 2017. With platforms like Nintendo Today!, the company has made its news and content more reachable for smartphone users.

For fans of the classic Fire Emblem style, there’s good news on the horizon. A new title for Switch 2, named Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, is set to launch in 2026. This game will continue the legacy of Three Houses, bringing back combat arts to enhance the traditional turn-based gameplay.

  • PlayStation State of Play Misses Bungie’s Marathon Announcement

PlayStation State of Play Misses Bungie’s Marathon Announcement

    Key Takeaways

    1. Omission of Marathon: The recent PlayStation State of Play did not include any updates on the highly anticipated game Marathon, disappointing fans expecting new information.

    2. Development Challenges: Marathon has faced significant issues during closed alpha tests, with mixed reviews from playtesters highlighting a lack of excitement and challenges in solo gameplay.

    3. Indefinite Delay: Bungie has announced an indefinite delay for Marathon to better integrate player feedback after a period of silence following unsatisfactory alpha test results.

    4. Plagiarism Controversy: Bungie encountered a backlash over a plagiarism accusation regarding the use of digital artist ANTIREAL’s designs, complicating their situation with community trust and artist compensation.

    5. Future Updates Expected: Despite current challenges, Marathon aims for a release on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC, with a possible March 2026 launch and a promised update on development in November.

Sony recently revealed its PlayStation State of Play, which promised over 35 minutes of direct announcements and updates about various games and franchises from PlayStation Studios. Yet, it surprisingly omitted a highly anticipated title: Marathon, which was absent from the September showcase.

    Bungie’s Extraction Shooter Misses Showcase

Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, was expected to provide insights into its development status during the event on September 24, 2025. However, according to reports from Forbes, sources close to the game’s development indicated there would be no new footage, trailers, or even a release date shared during this showcase.

    Development Challenges and Delays

Earlier this year, Marathon entered a lengthy period of silence after facing several issues during closed alpha tests, which received mixed reviews from playtesters. The initial rounds in April and May were described as rather unimpressive, with players expressing that there was a lack of excitement compared to other extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov.

Some testers found the solo gameplay far too challenging without teammates, and the unfinished alpha version failed to deliver the sci-fi excitement Bungie had promised. Even more crucially, in June 2025, Bungie announced that the game would be delayed indefinitely to better integrate player feedback, after a noticeable six months of silence from the studio.

    Controversies and Ongoing Testing

In May, a plagiarism controversy arose when digital artist ANTIREAL accused Bungie of using elements from her original designs as textures in Marathon’s alpha build. Bungie claimed that the misuse of her intellectual property was due to a former employee, but they faced backlash from the community over previous disputes concerning artist compensation, leaving the full situation regarding asset use unresolved.

Currently, Bungie is conducting closed alpha sessions under NDA for Marathon, allowing the studio to improve the game without the public’s critical eye that affected earlier tests. Insiders report that Bungie regrets showcasing unfinished aspects of the game too early.

    Future Expectations

Despite these challenges, the game is still aimed for release on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC with complete cross-play support, with rumors hinting at a March 2026 release. Additionally, fans can expect an update on Marathon’s development in November, as the studio mentioned in its June “Marathon Development Update”:

“We’ll reach out to you again later this Fall when we can share the progress we’ve made, along with the new release date. Your ongoing feedback will be invaluable in helping us create the amazing gaming experience we envision for Marathon.”
