Samsung Display has commenced mass production of the industry’s first laptop OLED panels to earn certification under VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard. The company confirms that Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and MSI are preparing notebooks featuring the new display technology. The certification targets roughly 40 percent higher brightness than the previous tier, requiring approximately 1,400 nits in a 10-percent window while sustaining true black levels. Samsung states its panels can achieve peak brightness up to 1,600 nits when measured in a smaller window.

Tandem architecture drives the brightness gains

The performance leap is credited to a tandem OLED structure that stacks two light-emitting layers on top of each other instead of relying on a single emissive layer. This arrangement boosts luminance and improves power efficiency without compromising picture quality. Samsung adds that the dual-layer design also contributes to richer high dynamic range, better color accuracy, and extended panel lifespan compared to earlier single-stack implementations.

First laptop arrives as competitors prepare their response

Lenovo has already brought the technology to market with its Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition, making it the first certified device to ship with the new display. Asus, Dell, and MSI are expected to announce their own models later this year. The advance is being closely watched across the supply chain; LG Display is reportedly developing comparable tandem OLED panels for notebooks, signaling that multi-layer emissive architectures are becoming the next competitive battleground in premium laptop displays.
