Samsung has officially lifted the curtain on the Galaxy Watch9, introducing the new wearable in 40mm and 44mm case sizes. The larger 44mm variant is offered in Graphite and Silver finishes, while the 40mm edition is available in Graphite and Cream. Both models retain the lightweight aluminum construction and physical dimensions of the previous generation, though the overall experience has been refined with a redesigned strap system.
A Lighter, Redesigned Band and Durable Display
The new silicone band introduces an air pocket structure that makes it 17% lighter and softer than the 40mm band that shipped with the Galaxy Watch8. On the wrist, the 44mm watch measures 46 x 43.7 x 8.6mm and weighs 34g; the slimmer 40mm version comes in at 42.7 x 40.4 x 8.6mm and weighs 31.5g. Both sizes are built around a sapphire crystal Super AMOLED display—44mm or 40mm depending on case choice—capable of reaching up to 3,000 nits of brightness for clear outdoor visibility, with an Always On mode supported. A fresh selection of first-party bands accompanies the launch: the thin everyday Sport Band, the two-tone Misty Band designed for a polished all-day look, and a breathable Fabric Band that Samsung says is comfortable enough for sleep tracking.
Familiar Silicon with Enhanced Battery Life
Under the hood, the Galaxy Watch9 runs on the same Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset found in the Watch Ultra2, paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Battery capacity sees a notable uplift: the 44mm model houses a 445 mAh cell, while the 40mm variant carries a 390 mAh cell, representing a 20% increase over the Watch8 40mm’s battery. Samsung rates the device for up to 40 hours of use with the Always On Display switched off. Charging is handled by standard fast wireless charging, and the watch is built to endure harsh conditions with 5ATM and IP68 water resistance ratings alongside MIL-STD-810H certification. Connectivity spans Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, NFC, and dual-band GPS, with optional LTE available. The watch runs Wear OS 7 with the One UI 9 Watch interface and requires a smartphone running Android 13 or later.
Proactive Health Alerts and a New Fitness Index
On the health front, Samsung is introducing Vitals, an early-warning system that monitors heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, blood oxygen, and respiratory rate during sleep. After establishing a personal baseline over a minimum of seven nights of sleep data, the feature issues proactive alerts when readings deviate significantly. Samsung stresses that Vitals is not a diagnostic or treatment tool. The functionality requires Android 11 or later, Samsung Health version 7.0 or higher, and a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring worn during sleep. Vitals will also roll out to the Watch Ultra2.
A new Fitness Index feature, also shared with the Watch Ultra2, scores users across the categories of body composition, cardio, strength, flexibility, and endurance. Drawing on metrics such as VO2 max, bioelectrical impedance analysis, heart rate, step count, and activity duration, it plots current and target scores on a radar chart and can be set to a specific training focus—like running—with weekly workout recommendations generated automatically.
Hands-Free Gemini and Ecosystem Integration
Samsung is adding a hands-free “Raise to Talk” capability that lets users check messages, manage schedules, and control music through Google Gemini without pressing a button. The feature is exclusive to the Watch9 series and Watch Ultra2 and requires Gemini to be selected as the wake-enabled assistant instead of Bixby. The watch is positioned as a central hub within the broader Galaxy ecosystem: data syncs through the Samsung Health app across phones, watches, and Galaxy Buds, enabling experiences such as sleep-based bedtime guidance relayed directly to the earbuds.
The Galaxy Watch9 is available for preorder starting today, July 22, in select markets, with general availability following on August 7, 2026. In the EU, Bluetooth‑only pricing is set at €409 for the 40mm model and €439 for the 44mm model; adding LTE raises those prices to €459 and €489 respectively. Samsung is offering a €100 discount during the preorder period.
