In a move that blends physical payment hardware with a playful digital experience, Revolut has introduced a contactless debit card featuring embedded LED lights for its customers in Germany.

An illuminated payment experience

The card contains two LED panels that activate automatically at EMV contactless terminals. When a transaction is processed, the eyes of a small dog figure printed on the card glow visibly. The light is powered entirely by the energy harvested from the contactless reader via the standard EMV protocol, which normally supplies only the chip and its antenna. Reserve electrical capacity within that specification is sufficient to drive the LEDs, a technique long demonstrated by NFC test cards and niche transit accessories.

Crypto-first positioning and pricing

Revolut integrates the card into its app as a Mastercard debit card, but markets it primarily as a crypto-linked payment tool. At the ordering stage, customers must tie the card to one supported cryptocurrency or to a selection of all available crypto balances. The app also provides an option to connect the card to the cash account, though the setup requires a clear choice between cash or crypto funding. The physical card is priced around €30, with possible additional shipping fees.

A spotlight on special-edition hardware

The illuminated dog card extends Revolut’s strategy of launching limited-edition payment hardware, which has previously included heavy metal cards costing up to $92. The company has not yet confirmed whether additional LED-equipped card designs will follow. This approach reflects a small but established hardware experiment within the industry; Metro Taipei, for instance, has offered fare keychains shaped like subway carriages that blink and emit a sound when tapped at ticket gates. A few years ago, an OLED-lit credit card also surfaced on the market, though it employed an OLED lighting panel rather than a conventional display, functioning purely as a decorative illuminator without screen capabilities.
