Rumors surrounding a high-profile remake of a Nintendo 64 classic continue to swirl, but they increasingly point to a premium accessory rather than a bespoke piece of hardware. While speculation about a limited-edition console tied to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remains unconfirmed, fresh claims suggest the company may instead release a themed Switch 2 Pro controller to mark the title’s return.
Mixed Signals on a Zelda-Themed Console
The idea of a special controller was first floated by Mike Odyssey on social media, and the report was soon corroborated by Brazilian journalist Necro Felipe, who stated that he had already viewed the design. According to Felipe, the gamepad features green and gold handle grips, with the iconic Triforce emblem positioned near the center of the device. Both sources have uneven track records when it comes to hardware predictions, though the move would fit naturally within Nintendo’s established pattern of releasing franchise-specific gear. Most recently, the launch of Tears of the Kingdom was accompanied by a customized Switch Pro controller for the previous-generation console.
Renewed Console Hopes and Holiday Timing
Some consumers may be disappointed if a handheld hardware refresh fails to materialize. Back in March, industry insider Shpeshal Nick indicated that a Limited Edition Switch 2 bundle would launch alongside the updated Zelda title, although he could not confirm whether the game itself would be packaged with the system. The possibility of a special console has not been completely dismissed. While Mike Odyssey leans toward a more pessimistic outlook, Necro Felipe has not ruled out its eventual existence. Should the development team successfully modernize the beloved N64 adventure, the game has the potential to become a significant system seller. Leaker NateTheHate has separately pointed to the remake as the Mario maker’s major holiday attraction for the year.
Market Pressures and a Likely Premium Accessory
Broader manufacturing constraints have added complexity to Nintendo’s plans. A memory shortage has already driven up costs in Japan, and consumers in other regions are set to face a Switch 2 price increase on September 1st. There is industry speculation that, in an effort to sustain momentum before that adjustment, Nintendo could open pre-orders for the Ocarina of Time remake ahead of the September deadline. While a Zelda-themed Switch 2 Pro controller is likely to command a premium price, it would remain a far more accessible purchase than a special-edition console. It would also join an already expansive collection of officially licensed Joy-Cons, gamepads, and accessories celebrating the adventures of Link and Princess Zelda.
