The gaming community’s backlash against PlayStation’s move away from physical media shows no sign of cooling, but the company has remained silent since its July 1st blog post. According to former God of War writer and prominent content creator Alanah Pearce, that silence is a deliberate corporate strategy, with Sony instructing employees not to engage with the mounting criticism.
Internal directives to stay silent
Pearce, who worked at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, revealed in a recent video that the company had fully anticipated the wave of protests triggered by the announcement. Her role on the upcoming God of War title came with strict limitations on what she could publicly discuss. Those same restrictions, she noted, are now preventing staff from responding to concerns raised by game preservation advocates. First-party studio employees described the current rules to Pearce as “the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing that they've ever seen issued.”
A calculated gamble on fading outrage
It remains uncertain whether this strategy will succeed. Weeks after the details about PS5 discs became public, PlayStation’s marketing efforts continue to be overshadowed by criticism, and some partners have privately questioned the effectiveness of paid promotional campaigns during the uproar. However, Pearce argues that the outcry will eventually subside. As long as consumers keep gravitating toward digital purchases, supporters of physical media will gradually adjust to a marketplace dominated by the PlayStation Store. Circana sales data appears to support that forecast, showing that physical game sales are struggling despite the vocal backlash.
Contrasting approaches to public pressure
Sony’s reluctance to directly address fan concerns on social platforms is not new, but the contrast with Microsoft has sharpened. Since Xbox CEO Asha Sharma took over, Microsoft has adopted a more proactive stance, even when navigating its own controversial decisions. The company recently responded to criticism about its exclusive games lineup and commented on a wave of hacked accounts—an issue PlayStation has largely avoided addressing. While Microsoft’s approach carries its own risk of mixed messaging, PlayStation seems to be betting that issuing replies would only prolong protests over a decision it considers irreversible.
