Xbox is addressing a longstanding frustration for gamers who have seen inconsistent download speeds on both consoles and PC. An update now rolling out to testers changes how the platform selects content delivery servers, moving from a static assignment to a dynamic, performance-based approach.

Optimized Server Selection in Testing

The refresh was detailed on July 22 in release notes for Xbox Update Preview, aimed at Alpha Skip-Ahead members in the Insider program. The build, carrying OS version XB_FLT_2608GE\26100.9400.260719-2200, introduces periodic server scanning designed to locate and maintain the fastest available connection for each download.

The updated behavior is described as follows:

  • Shortly after a game download begins, the client will check which content servers are available for the install or update. It will then test the connection speed to each server pool and select the fastest available connection for that install. The speed test will rerun periodically during the install or update to ensure that the client continues using the fastest available connection.

Early Signs Point to a Broader Rollout

Although the feature is framed primarily for Xbox consoles, early feedback suggests the improvement extends to Xbox PC devices as well. Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported experiencing a noticeable uplift on an Asus ROG Ally handheld, a device running the Xbox app on Windows. This aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing effort to unify the experience across its hardware and PC storefronts.

The timing of a wider public release remains unconfirmed. The last update landed on July 15 carrying OS version 10.0.26100.8866 (xb_flt_2607ge.260630-2200), which places the new server optimization logic close to the front of the line. As Xbox works to refine its delivery infrastructure, this network-aware approach marks a concrete technical step toward a more reliable download experience.
