Magnetic sensor technology could offer a permanent fix for joystick drift in a future-generation PlayStation controller, newly published Sony documentation suggests. The patent filing, titled “Operating Stick and Assembly and Input Device,” outlines a design that detects stick movement without physical contact between the components most prone to wear.
How the contactless design works
The filing, dated July 2, describes a mechanism that “senses tilting of the operating stick in a noncontact manner,” helping it maintain accuracy across extended use. Small “engaging protrusions” lock into corresponding grooves to prevent the kind of unintended rotational play that accelerates degradation in conventional potentiometer-based sticks. When a player moves the assembly, the structure ensures that force is not wasted through rotation, which the patent states results in improved operability.
Consistent centring is addressed through a spring-based return system, while a cylindrical biasing structure stabilizes the magnetic field around the sensor to further refine reading precision.
A possible answer to persistent drift complaints
The concept draws on TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) principles already deployed by smaller peripheral makers, who have brought Hall effect and TMR-equipped gamepads to market at accessible price points. Although stick drift is more widely reported on competing Xbox hardware, PS5 DualSense controllers are not immune—potentiometers in any modern thumbstick can gradually wear down, introducing phantom inputs. Even the premium DualSense Edge has not entirely escaped reliability questions.
Reluctance among the three major platform holders to broadly adopt magnetic sensors has fuelled consumer skepticism, with critics arguing that frequent accessory replacement cycles suit the manufacturers’ bottom line. The growing aftermarket shift toward drift-resistant sticks, however, may push the next console generation toward native TMR or Hall effect hardware.
From patent to production—no guarantees
Sony’s filing makes clear the described technology could be intended for what the market would naturally call a PS6 controller, though it remains unclear whether such a device would be included with the console or sold as a high-end upgrade. As with many PlayStation controller patents, the idea may never reach store shelves. A separate recent submission, for instance, proposed a modular gamepad featuring a built-in touchscreen display, underscoring the company’s habit of exploring concepts that do not always advance to commercial products.
