Onyx has officially teased a new, ultra-compact e-reader line that signals a shift toward even smaller devices. The forthcoming Boox Tile series introduces a form factor markedly more diminutive than the company’s previous smartphone-sized offerings.
A pocket-sized shift in design
The first confirmed model in the range is called the Boox Picco. Early promotional images depict a minimalist white device that resembles a basic smartphone, complete with a flat surrounding bezel and a slightly thicker chin beneath the display. At 3.97 inches diagonally, its screen makes it significantly more compact than the smallest mainstream handsets available today. For context, the Xteink X4 Pro is among the most compact e-readers at 4.3 inches, while Onyx until now has concentrated on phone-proportioned models.
Grayscale display with night reading support
The Picco will feature an E-Ink panel limited to grayscale output, but Onyx has included front lighting, ensuring that users can read in dark environments without discomfort. The presence of a microSD card slot will allow owners to store entire libraries directly on the device. Based on similar technical approaches taken by rivals, the Picco’s operating system is expected to be a streamlined, reading-focused environment rather than a fully open Android platform, though the company has yet to confirm the software specifics.
