Huawei Mate X6 Upgrades Explained: Features and Improvements

Huawei has just unveiled the Mate X6 along with the Mate 70 series in China. This smartphone marks the company’s second foldable model in 2024, following the Mate XT Ultimate Design.

    A Successor to Mate X5

As implied by its name, the Mate X6 is the next version of the Mate X5 released in 2023. This phone features a book-style design, with its display folding horizontally. In contrast, the Mate XT Ultimate is unique as it is a trifold smartphone, showcasing a different approach in foldable design.

    Key Upgrades

The Mate X6 introduces several enhancements compared to the Mate X5. These improvements not only elevate its performance but also position it as a formidable player against other foldable smartphones in the market. Let’s delve into the main features of the Huawei Mate X6.

    Design and Durability

When unfolded, the Huawei Mate X6 boasts a mere thickness of 4.6mm, making it one of the slimmest book-style foldable devices available. Even in its folded state, it retains a thickness of just 9.9mm. The device weighs approximately 239 grams, which is quite lightweight for a foldable smartphone.

The back of the phone is offered in two types of finishes: leather and nylon fiber. These materials contribute to its durability, lowering the risk of damage from accidental drops. Additionally, the Mate X6 is rated IPX8 for water resistance and incorporates self-developed second-generation Kunlun Glass to protect its external display.

  • Huawei Mate X6 Collector Edition: Bigger Display, Tougher Build

Huawei Mate X6 Collector Edition: Bigger Display, Tougher Build

Despite many reports indicating that some companies could drop their foldable smartphone plans, Huawei is still committed to the foldable market. The company has just launched the Mate X6, the newest version in its series of folding phones.

    Enhanced Features

The X6 keeps the essential folding design but comes with significant upgrades, including bigger displays, a unique rear camera layout, and AI enhancements aimed at improving user interaction. These changes make the device not only visually appealing but also more functional for daily tasks.

    Larger and Brighter Screens

One of the most noticeable updates is the increase in size for both the internal and external screens. When unfolded, the X6 showcases a 7.93-inch LTPO 2.0 display that features a 120Hz refresh rate and can reach a peak brightness of 1800 nits. This should provide a more engaging experience for watching videos, gaming, or completing work tasks.

The outer display has also grown, now measuring 6.45 inches while maintaining the same 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO 2.0 technology. Both screens offer impressive brightness, with the outer display hitting 2500 nits and the inner display peaking at 1800 nits, making outdoor visibility much better. Moreover, the 1440Hz PWM dimming on both screens is designed to lessen eye fatigue, particularly during long periods of use in dim lighting.

  • Huawei Mate X6: Sleek Foldable Smartphone with No Camera Compromises

Huawei Mate X6: Sleek Foldable Smartphone with No Camera Compromises

Huawei has unveiled its second foldable phone of the year, following the Mate XT which was launched at the end of summer. This time, the brand has opted for a traditional book-style foldable design with the Mate X6, which takes the place of the Mate X5 that debuted over a year ago.

    Specifications Comparison

In terms of slimness and weight, the Magic V3 still holds the title of the thinnest and lightest foldable smartphone. Nevertheless, the Mate X6 outshines competitors like the Galaxy Z Fold6, OnePlus Open, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold (currently priced at $1,499 on Amazon) with its thickness of 4.6 mm when opened, 9.85~9.9 mm when folded, and a weight of 239 g. Additionally, Huawei has integrated a 5,110 mAh battery that allows for 50 W wireless and 66 W wired charging.

    Display Features

Huawei has also equipped the Mate X6 with a 6.45-inch LTPO AMOLED cover display, which features a 1080p resolution along with a refresh rate ranging from 1-120 Hz. It boasts an impressive peak brightness of 2,500 nits. In contrast, the internal display of the Mate X6 measures 7.93 inches while maintaining the same refresh rate, though it offers a native resolution of 2,440 x 2,240 pixels and has a lower peak brightness of 1,800 nits.

    Camera Capabilities

On the camera front, Huawei has incorporated a 50 MP main camera with an f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture, mirroring the setup of the Mate 70 series. The Mate X6 also features a 48 MP telephoto camera, a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and 8 MP front cameras on both displays. Like the Mate 70 series, there is no information available yet on international release. For context, the starting price of the Mate X6 in China is CNY 12,999 (approximately $1,793), which includes 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, while the model with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage costs CNY 15,999 (around $2,207).

  • Galaxy Z Flip FE: Samsung’s Affordable Flip Phone Preview

Galaxy Z Flip FE: Samsung’s Affordable Flip Phone Preview

Rumors have suggested that Samsung is developing a budget-friendly foldable smartphone. This new model is expected to have a flip phone style and might be called the Galaxy Z Flip FE. Even though there hasn’t been any official announcement about this economical foldable device, we’ve seen numerous leaks and speculations about the Galaxy Z Flip FE. Here’s what you might be able to look forward to.

    Design and Dimensions

Up to now, there haven’t been any images or renders of the Galaxy Z Flip FE released. However, a report from April 2024 has confirmed its size. The renowned South Korean tech company’s Galaxy Z Flip FE is likely to be 84.9 x 71.9 x 15.9–171.mm when folded and 165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9mm when opened. Since Samsung has recently launched the Galaxy Z Flip 6, we can anticipate that the Z Flip FE will have a similar design aesthetic and display features.

    Display Specifications

To provide a reminder, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 boasts a tall 6.7-inch primary LTPO AMOLED screen that supports a 120Hz refresh rate, while its cover display measures 3.4 inches with a Super AMOLED panel and a 60Hz refresh rate. Given that the Galaxy Z Flip FE is intended to be a more cost-effective alternative, it’s possible that the company could adjust some of the design aspects and display specifications to meet a lower price point.

  • Galaxy Z Flip FE Expected to Launch in 2025

Galaxy Z Flip FE Expected to Launch in 2025

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which comes with a sleeker look and a higher cost compared to the Z Fold 6. However, there are now whispers that the company is planning to create a more budget-friendly device for those interested in a foldable with a hinge. Industry insider Ross Young has indicated that the Galaxy Z Flip FE, a more affordable foldable phone, is likely to be released in 2025.

A Budget-Friendly Flip Phone on the Horizon?

After much talk about a cheaper foldable smartphone, it appears Samsung is finally taking steps to make this a reality. The anticipated device is said to share the same display as the forthcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7, but it might save money by incorporating a lower-end camera and an older processor. Unlike the Galaxy Z Flip FE, Samsung is reportedly not considering creating a budget variant of its larger Galaxy Z Fold series, focusing instead on reducing costs only within its compact foldable range.

    Speculation on Hardware and Chipsets

There is growing curiosity about the chipset for the Galaxy Z Flip FE. A report from Sammobile indicates that Samsung might use either the Exynos 2400 or Exynos 2400e (both of which are found in the S24 FE) to power the phone. These chips could be considered outdated by the time it launches. However, there’s a chance that the device could arrive with the Exynos 2500, assuming Samsung Foundry overcomes current yield rate issues with its 3nm process node.

The Exynos 2500 is thought to be a high-performance processor that was initially meant for the Galaxy S25 series. Due to current production hurdles, its inclusion in the S25 lineup is uncertain, making it a viable option for the Z Flip FE.

    A Potential Breakthrough for Foldables

Should the Galaxy Z Flip FE indeed come to fruition, it could represent a significant advancement for foldable phones, making them accessible to a wider range of consumers. Although specific pricing and specifications are not yet clear, the phone is anticipated to offer a mix of affordability and Samsung’s trusted brand quality.

Interestingly, Motorola has quietly launched an affordable flip phone named the Motorola Razr 50s in Japan this September. This phone features the Dimensity 7300X chip and is priced at approximately JPY 115,200 (~$800).

  • Oppo Find N5 and OnePlus Open 2 Launch Timeline Revealed

Oppo Find N5 and OnePlus Open 2 Launch Timeline Revealed

After taking a year off, Oppo is set to release its new foldable device, the Find N5, in China in 2025. The global launch will be under the name OnePlus Open 2. Although there wasn’t much information available earlier, fresh leaks are starting to shed light on the device.

    Expected Launch Date and Specs

Recently, a tipster on Weibo, known as Smart Pikachu, shared some specifications of the phone, along with when we might expect it to launch. Reports from insiders suggest that Oppo aims to unveil the Find N5 sometime in the first half of 2025, specifically between January and June. The device is anticipated to come with a 50MP triple rear camera setup and will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

    Design and Features

The foldable is rumored to be sleek and lightweight, featuring a metal frame and offering support for wireless magnetic charging. Oppo teased this wireless charging feature in a subtle video for the Find X8 back in September. Interestingly, the tipster claims that the foldable will work well with Apple’s ecosystem. This probably refers to the “Share with iPhone” function that Oppo and OnePlus included in their Android 15 skin, allowing easy sharing of photos, videos, and files between Android and iPhone devices, but it does need an app installed on the iPhone.

    Battery and Camera Capabilities

A previous report indicated that the Find N5 will use a dual-cell battery setup (2,460mAh + 3,105mAh), giving it a total rated capacity of 5,565mAh, and a typical capacity close to 5,700mAh. The camera configuration is expected to consist of a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, all within a slim 9mm body.

The Oppo Find N3, also known as the OnePlus Open, was highly praised for both its hardware and software quality. The brands are anticipated to maintain this standard of excellence with their upcoming foldable, especially after taking a year-long hiatus. It will be exciting to see the innovations they introduce next.
