DJI Air 3S Drone Launch: Upgraded Cameras & Enhanced Obstacle Detection

DJI has officially unveiled its new drone during the ‘Chase the View’ launch event held today. The highly anticipated Air 3S has been announced, although DJI has yet to release any formal details. Interestingly, The Verge has jumped the gun and shared its coverage on the launch ahead of time.

    Upgrades in Camera Technology

The Air 3S sets itself apart from last year’s Air 3, which is currently priced at $1,549 on Amazon, with a range of camera enhancements. For instance, DJI has upgraded the primary camera from the Air 3, swapping out the 48 MP and 1/1.3-inch sensor for a much larger and more detailed 1-inch type sensor that shoots at 50 MP.

    Enhanced Features for Better Performance

While the Air 3S keeps the 48 MP telephoto camera from its predecessor (with a 1/1.3-inch sensor offering 3x optical zoom), both cameras boast 14 f-stops of dynamic range. This enhancement is expected to help the Air 3S perform better in bright sunlight or during sunset shots. Additionally, the drone can record 4K videos at a smooth 60 FPS with HDR or 120 FPS for slow-motion captures.

    Storage and Battery Life Improvements

Allegedly, new compression techniques are said to reduce file sizes by up to 30%, coinciding with DJI’s expansion of internal storage from 8 GB to a whopping 42 GB, while still allowing for microSD card additions. The Air 3S is also equipped with six cameras, a LiDAR scanner, and an infrared ToF sensor, which greatly improves its obstacle avoidance capabilities and ensures reliable ‘return to home’ functionality in low-light situations. The drone is claimed to offer up to 45 minutes of flight time between battery changes, although this is likely only achievable under perfect conditions with minimal wind and obstacles.

The Air 3S will be available for order starting later today, with prices set at £959, €1,099, and $1,099, which includes an RC-N3 remote controller. DJI will also provide various combo packages with different controllers and accessories. However, it appears that the anticipated RC Track’s release has been postponed, as it was not mentioned at all in The Verge’s pre-launch coverage.

  • DJI Announces Official Release Date for New Consumer Drone

DJI Announces Official Release Date for New Consumer Drone

DJI has taken its time this year to launch a new product for consumers. But it isn’t wasting time after the recent release of the Osmo Action 5 Pro and Neo. While the details about the upcoming device are not fully confirmed, the company has shared when it will reveal it.

    Upcoming Event Announcement

As hinted by a last-minute leak, DJI is set to unveil a new product on October 15, moving up from the previously suggested date of October 23. The teaser from the company indicates that the ‘Chase the View’ event will kick off at 13:00 UTC. This timing will likely also mark the start of global pre-orders. However, it’s still unclear when these pre-orders will actually start shipping out.

    Anticipated New Product

At this moment, DJI is expected to announce the Air 3S instead of the flagship Mavic 4. Though this is not yet confirmed, the Air 3S has received more leaks in recent weeks compared to the Mavic 4. Additionally, DJI’s teaser suggests that the new product launching on October 15 will come with two cameras, aligning with what we anticipate for an Air 3 (curr. $1,239 on Amazon) successor, rather than a replacement for the Mavic 3.

DJI Air 3S Leak: Specs of New Dual-Camera Drone Revealed

At this stage, we’ve had the chance to view DJI’s upcoming Air 3S drone from several perspectives. We’ve also seen some in-flight videos of the drone, along with price leaks. Although many specifications were not clear until now, a well-known tipster with a solid track record of DJI leaks has revealed almost all the details about the Air 3S. Some of these details match earlier leaks, making the rumors even more credible. Weighing in at 724 grams, the Air 3S is anticipated to come with a dual-camera setup, which includes a wide-angle and a medium telephoto lens.

    Camera Specifications

The wide-angle camera is expected to have a 1-inch CMOS sensor, as previously thought, with a digital zoom ranging from 1 to 2.9x, a 24 mm focal length, an f/1.8 aperture, and a resolution of 50 megapixels. This represents a significant upgrade from the DJI Air 2S (currently priced at $894 on Amazon), which had a 20MP sensor. The telephoto lens is said to feature a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, with a digital zoom of 3x to 9x, a 70 mm focal length, an f/2.8 aperture, and a resolution of 48 MP. Both cameras will provide a dynamic range of up to 14 stops.

    Video and Flight Features

According to the latest leak, the video capabilities will include 4K shooting at up to 60fps and slow-motion video at 4K/120fps. The drone will support recording in 10-bit D-log-M and HLG formats, ensuring high-quality footage. Video stabilization is handled by a 3-axis ball anti-shake system.

The Air 3S is expected to have a maximum flight time of 45 minutes, powered by a 4,276 mAh battery, taking previous leaks into consideration. It will also come with 42 GB of internal storage, with MicroSD support for cards up to 512 GB. For obstacle avoidance, the drone is equipped with a LiDAR-based sensor barrier detection system, which is a first for DJI’s non-commercial drones. Previously, DJI included LiDAR sensors in its much pricier Zenmuse L1 and L2 drones, making this a significant advancement for the brand.

    Intelligent Flight Modes

The Air 3S will offer various intelligent flight modes, such as Waypoint, QuickShots, MasterShots, FocusTrack, Spotlight 2.0, ActiveTrack 5.0, and Point of Interest 3.0. Additional features will include APAS 5.0, night mode, hyperlapse, slow-motion, SmartPhoto 3.0, and QuickTransfer. Furthermore, it will have a next-gen Return to Home (RTH) system for automated flight return, according to reports.

With all these leaked specifications, the DJI Air 3S is shaping up to be a notable improvement over the DJI Air 2S, with a price point of $1,492, based on earlier reports (this price includes the RC 2 remote controller, in addition to the new RC-N3 remote controller option that comes with the DJI Neo). Now, we just need an official confirmation from DJI, which should be coming soon.

  • DJI Air 3S Leaked Photos Reveal New Drone Launch Date and Price Drop

DJI Air 3S Leaked Photos Reveal New Drone Launch Date and Price Drop

DJI has launched a couple of new products during the summer. They brought out the Osmo Action 5 Pro and Neo (currently priced at $199 on Amazon) soon after competitors like GoPro and HOVERAir made their own announcements. However, it appears DJI still has more drones to release this year.

    Upcoming Drone Release

New leaks indicate that the company is preparing to introduce the Air 3S, a successor to both the Air 2S and Air 3. As previously rumored, the Air 3S will reportedly come with a variety of Fly More Combo accessory packs. It seems that DJI will include not only the new RC-N3 remote controller that was introduced with the Neo but also the RC 2, which can already be set up with several other DJI drones like the Mini 4 Pro.

    Pricing and Specifications

According to reports, the launch price for the Air 3S Fly More Combo with an RC 2 remote controller is set at €1,359 (around $1,492). If this is true, it would be €30 (approximately $33) cheaper than the current Air 3. In addition, various insiders have released numerous official device photos, many of which you can see below. While the complete camera specs are still unknown, these images hint at an f/2.4 aperture for the drone’s bottom camera. The last image suggests that the launch date might be October 15, but this has not been confirmed yet.

  • DJI Air 3S Leak: Larger Battery and Features Revealed Before Launch

DJI Air 3S Leak: Larger Battery and Features Revealed Before Launch

DJI’s upcoming Air series drone is nearly confirmed, even though the company hasn’t officially mentioned plans to replace the Air 2S or Air 3. The drone has been identified in the public database of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). While getting FCC certification doesn’t guarantee a product launch, it has frequently indicated future releases for DJI in recent times.

    New Drone Details

Recently, DJI launched a lightweight 135 g drone named the Neo, currently priced at $199 on Amazon. There are indications that DJI might also be working on an update related to first-person view (FPV) for this new compact drone, with further details available in a separate article. In contrast, the FCC certification has focused on the Air 3S, and notably, it mentions the drone by name even before its official announcement.

    Battery and Features

The FCC has also disclosed that the Air 3S will come equipped with a new battery that has a capacity of 4,276 mAh (62.5 Wh). This means that the Air 3S will have a larger battery compared to the Air 3. However, a 25 mAh increase in capacity is not likely to significantly enhance battery life between these two models. According to recent speculation, DJI may introduce some camera upgrades with the Air 3S, including a new 1-inch type camera sensor. The company is anticipated to unveil the Air 3S sometime in late September or early October.
