In just a few days, Huawei is set to reveal its second tri-foldable device, the Mate XTs. Early videos in a chic purple and white color scheme have already been released as teasers. Similar to the Mate XT, Huawei is maintaining the established design of a display that folds both inwards and outwards, creating a Z-pattern.
Durability Concerns
This design leaves part of the fragile AMOLED screen exposed when folded, which could affect its durability during daily usage, thus necessitating a protective case. In contrast, Samsung has opted for a different approach with its first tri-foldable device. Based on earlier reports, this device will feature two sections that fold inward. While this design adds an extra cover display that makes the case thicker, it does provide better protection for the flexible panel inside.
New Folding Mechanism Revealed
Until now, the folding mechanism of the first dual-folding Galaxy tablet was uncertain. Observers based on display prototypes showcased at trade shows had generally believed that both sides would fold over each other, first from the left and then the right, or the other way around. However, a fresh animation found in the One UI 8 code from Samsung indicates a different folding pattern.
The video displays where the wireless charging coil is located, which is concealed in the right section of the 10-inch tablet when viewed from the front. Towards the end of the video, it becomes clear that Samsung is likely planning a strict left-to-right folding design. Initially, the left third of the display folds onto the middle section, followed by folding these two parts onto the right third of the display. Whether this design will be the final version for the “Galaxy G Fold” is still unknown, but it appears probable.
NFC and Charging Features
Leaker @TechHighest also posted two videos on X, indicating that the Samsung TriFold will support contactless NFC payments and reverse wireless charging. The reverse wireless charging module can be found on the right side of the case when looking from the front, positioned opposite the cameras on the back. The cover display, featuring a punch-hole camera, is situated right in the center of the double-foldable pocket tablet, which is expected to be launched at the end of September.
