Red Magic has recently unveiled its latest gaming smartphones, the Red Magic 9 Pro series, in China. The series includes two models, namely the Red Magic 9 Pro and Red Magic 9 Pro+. Let's take a closer look at the specifications and features of these smartphones.
Design & Display
The Red Magic 9 Pro series is being touted as the ultimate candy bar phone. It boasts a sleek and flat back design, eliminating any camera bump on the rear and front camera cutout on the display. The camera setup on these devices is protected by a custom-made glass layer that does not interfere with the light entering the sensors.
With a thickness of 8.9mm, the series offers three color options: Dark Knight, Deuterium Front Transparent Dark Night, and Deuterium Front Transparent Silver Wings.
On the front, the devices feature a 6.8-inch full-screen AMOLED display with a resolution of 2480 x 1116 pixels. The screen-to-body ratio is an impressive 93.7%. The display offers a 120Hz refresh rate, 2160Hz ultra-high frequency PWM dimming + DC dimming, a 960Hz multi-finger touch sampling rate, and a peak brightness of 1600nit. It also provides full coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut and supports HDR10+. Notably, these phones come with an under-display camera that is covered with BOE's under-screen Q9+ luminescent material to seamlessly blend with the display.
Performance & Specs
Under the hood, both the Red Magic 9 Pro and 9 Pro+ are powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, coupled with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS4.0 storage. They feature a 10,182mm² vapor chamber, a new alloy fan + waterfall air duct, and the CUBE energy engine, which claims to reduce the heat generated by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip by up to 25°C. Thanks to this efficient cooling system, the phones achieve impressive AnTuTu scores of 2,291,328 points at room temperature and 2,321,054 points in lab conditions. Red Magic claims that the phones can easily sustain 60FPS in Genshin Impact for 60 minutes.
The devices are also rumored to include Red Magic's in-house game chip, the Red Core R2 Pro, which enhances gaming features such as haptic feedback, audio, and touch-sampling rate.
On the software front, the Red Magic 9 Pro series comes equipped with REDMAGIC OS 9.0, based on Android 14. A notable feature of the new OS is X Gravity 2.0 software, which enables seamless mapping of external devices like controllers, keyboards, and mice to on-screen controls.
Battery & Other Features
The Red Magic 9 Pro houses a 6500mAh battery with 80W fast charging support, capable of fully charging the device in just 35 minutes. On the other hand, the Red Magic 9 Pro+ comes with a slightly smaller 5500mAh battery but compensates with 165W ultra-fast flash charging, providing a full charge in just 16 minutes. Both models support the USB 3.2 gen2 protocol and full-featured TYPE-C.
Other notable features onboard include 520Hz touch shoulder buttons for gaming, Magic Sound stereo dual speakers, three built-in microphones, Wi-Fi 7, an IR remote control, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and NFC.
Camera
In terms of cameras, the Red Magic 9 Pro series features a primary 50-megapixel Samsung GN5 camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). Unlike the previous model, the series now includes a 50-megapixel JN1 ultra-wide sensor instead of an 8-megapixel wide sensor. Additionally, there is a 2-megapixel macro lens included for some reason.
