Apple's iPhone lineup may be headed for a big design change with the upcoming iPhone 17 series. A recent leak indicates that Apple could introduce a central camera bump, which would be a big shift from the usual corner-aligned rear camera setup.
New Features in the iPhone 17 Series
The change, uncovered through images shared by the YouTube channel AppleTrack, suggests other essential updates for the iPhone 17 series, including improved camera features.
A Fresh Look for the iPhone 17 Air/Slim
The iPhone 17 Air is said to be the highlight of this design makeover. It was earlier thought to have a single rear camera, reflecting the simple style of the iPhone SE or the iPhone 8. However, the latest images from the source showcase a dual-camera setup that is centered and laid out horizontally, moving away from the vertical design seen in recent models. In contrast, other variations of the iPhone 17 are likely to keep their current camera setup.
In one way, this design for the Air model doesn’t seem to fit with the other models, yet it strikingly resembles the much cheaper Nothing Phone (2a). Moreover, the current iPhone 16 also bears some resemblance to Apple's old designs and Samsung's latest offerings. Interestingly, reports suggest that Apple might price this model between $1,299 and $1,499.
Upgrades in the iPhone 17 Pro Models
The iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to feature some major updates, with the Pro Max variant possibly including a 48MP periscope telephoto lens, making it a tougher rival to Android flagship phones in long-range zoom photography.
Obstacles with the ‘Slim’ Design
The iPhone 17 Air, also known as the “Slim,” was initially thought to prioritize thinner and lighter designs by utilizing a high-density battery. However, leaks from Naver user yeux1122 suggest that Apple has encountered challenges in using this technology, leading the company to reduce its ultra-slim design goals. Consequently, the iPhone 17 Air might not achieve a significant decrease in thickness, even with its new design.
Combining nostalgic and modern features, the iPhone 17 series looks set to be an important launch for Apple. While the central camera bump and pricing might be divisive, the introduction of enhanced zoom features in the Pro models indicates that Apple is focused on keeping its competitive position in the market.
