In a significant incident, sensitive details and important documents from the Indian Army were exposed. Prior to this major leak, Army officials had been using WhatsApp to share information. As a result, during discussions with China regarding border issues, the Indian Army opted to utilize Sambhav (Secure Army Mobile Bharat Version) smartphones for more secure communications. Now, we finally get a glimpse of this device, which closely resembles a Google Pixel.
Similarities to Google Pixel 6a
The images circulating on the internet display a smartphone featuring a camera module akin to the Visor design of the Google Pixel. This module includes a dual-camera arrangement along with an LED flash. On the right side of the device, you can find the volume controls and power button, while the back panel is green. Judging by the pictures, the Sambhav phone certainly shares a design language with the Pixel 6a.
Features of the Sambhav Device
For those who might not know, the Indian Army distributed approximately 30,000 Sambhav phones to its officers. These smartphones came equipped with the M-Sigma app, which allows users to send messages, share documents, videos, and photos. Though it serves a similar purpose as WhatsApp, it promises enhanced security for communications. Additionally, the Sambhav smartphone comes with several key features, such as the ability to avoid saving contacts, a secure end-to-end mobile ecosystem, and compatibility with Jio and Airtel networks.
According to the Indian Army’s official statement, “Mobile networks are inherently vulnerable to eavesdropping, putting sensitive information at risk. To counter this, we have developed an end-to-end secure mobile ecosystem that is network-agnostic and offers secure communication on the move.” It remains uncertain whether the design was truly inspired by the Google Pixel 6a or if it is merely a coincidence.
