Huawei Develops Custom Image Sensors for Pura 80 Ultra

Huawei continues to lead the smartphone market in China, showing no signs of letting up. The company has outpaced Apple and local rivals like Xiaomi to take the number one position in the country’s smartphone sector. Additionally, it holds the title of the top foldable brand in China.

Strategic Self-Reliance

This success can be linked to Huawei’s focus on self-sufficiency in both hardware and software, which has helped cushion the blow from the U.S. ban affecting its business operations. The next flagship model on the horizon is the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, and it’s poised to make a significant splash in the market.

Innovative Camera Features

As per Weibo leaker Smart Pikachu, the phone will boast a “self-developed” triple-camera setup on its back. This will include a large 1-inch sensor for the primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a “super-large” periscope zoom lens that has a 1/1.3-inch sensor. For comparison, the Pura 70 series utilizes OmniVision sensors.

Powerful New Chip

Moreover, it is believed that Huawei is developing a new Kirin 5G processor for the Pura 80 series, tentatively named Kirin 9020, which is expected to deliver enhanced power and performance, especially for photography. The brand is likely to improve its AI capabilities with the upcoming Pura lineup, possibly leading to advancements in image processing.

The Huawei Pura 80 series is anticipated to debut in the second quarter of 2025, likely around April, aligning with the launch schedule of the Pura 70 series. However, Huawei has not yet confirmed these specifics. The official specifications and features for the upcoming flagship smartphones may be disclosed during the formal launch event.
