DJI Osmo Action 6 Upgrades: Variable Aperture & More Revealed

Key Takeaways

1. DJI was expected to launch the Osmo Action 6 on October 24, but this information was inaccurate.
2. A promotional image of the Osmo Action 6 has been leaked, showing design updates from earlier FCC images.
3. The new design features ‘Action’ branding and possibly a microphone aperture and a small LED fill light or subject tracking sensor.
4. The Osmo Action 6 is rumored to have a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor, a upgrade from the previous model’s 1/1.3-inch sensor.
5. The camera is expected to have a 135° field of view with a variable aperture of f/2.0 or f/4.0, but further confirmation is needed.

Earlier this month, there were whispers that DJI was set to unveil its next action camera before November. In short, The New Camera claimed that the company aimed to hold a launch event for the Osmo Action 6 on October 24. Sadly, it appears these whispers were not accurate.

First Look at the Camera

Nevertheless, Igor Bogdanov has shared what seems to be the first promotional image revealing the Osmo Action 6 in more detail. To give some background, many images popped up on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website back in June. However, Bogdanov’s recent leak indicates that those FCC images were of a prototype version.

Design Changes

For example, the wide black strip found in the FCC’s images has been replaced by ‘Action’ branding along with two additional components next to it. At this point, we think the aperture beside the branding might be for a microphone. Meanwhile, the component next to it could possibly be a small LED fill light or some kind of subject tracking sensor.

Hardware Insights

Bogdanov’s leaked photo might have disclosed some camera hardware specifics that haven’t been revealed before. For instance, one can deduce from the text around the camera that the Osmo Action 6 is equipped with a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor, which would represent a significant upgrade from the 1/1.3-inch sensor found in the Osmo Action 5 Pro (currently priced at $349 on Amazon). Additionally, it seems the Osmo Action 6 will feature a 135° field of view (FoV) but with a f/2.0 or f/4.0 variable aperture. In the end, we suggest waiting for more information before forming an opinion on these specifications.
