Development Kit Delays
Although the Nintendo Switch 2 was released on June 5, Digital Extremes still hasn’t got their hands on a devkit due to a backlog of requests. This information came out during a Q&A session with Eurogamer, where CEO Steve Sinclair expressed the team’s excitement regarding the potential for a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Warframe. Sinclair mentioned, “Our tech team is so excited to take advantage of the cool high-speed cores and the other really cool features of it (Switch 2). There’s just such a backlog of dev kits. So, if you know anyone… just one, that’s all it would take.”
Exciting Features Await
Digital Extremes could introduce several quality-of-life improvements with the enhanced Warframe experience for the Nintendo Switch 2. Players might look forward to improved graphics, Joy-Con mouse support, and quicker loading times, surpassing the technical specifications of the original Switch version.
Players can still access Warframe on the Nintendo Switch 2 through backwards compatibility with the Switch 1 version. However, many users are encountering numerous crashes and glitches when launching the game. This issue is something that Digital Extremes is currently looking into.
Other Developers in the Same Boat
Digital Extremes isn’t the only company waiting for a Switch 2 devkit, as other studios are also on the waiting list. Notable among them are Ant Workshop and Fellow Traveller Games, likely due to production limitations on devkits.
While some developers are anxiously waiting, larger studios have already received early access. For instance, CD Projekt Red launched Cyberpunk 2077 as a day-one third-party title, and FromSoftware plans to release Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition in 2025.
A Bright Future for Warframe
Despite the delays, the developers of Warframe remain dedicated to delivering a Switch 2 port at the earliest opportunity. Sinclair assured fans, “Oh, I can’t wait. We definitely have plans. When we get a dev kit, we’ll be doing a custom build for Warframe. Absolutely.”
Warframe is available on all major platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series S|X, PC, iOS, and there’s an Android version expected in fall 2025. Additionally, Warframe will introduce a new story chapter titled “The Old Peace,” which will further advance the game’s Void narrative toward the “Tau” update, scheduled for 2026. Until then, Switch 2 players will have to be patient for a native port as Digital Extremes navigates through the devkit delays.
