Reviews for the RTX 5090 are expected to be released on January 24, while the RTX 5080 reviews will arrive on the same day as its launch. Despite the absence of official reviews, we have gathered insights about the RTX 5090 through leaks and various gaming performance data.

    Impressive Performance Metrics

    A gaming test from PC Centric highlights how the RTX 5090 performs in Cyberpunk 2077, both with and without DLSS Frame Generation. The results show that the RTX 5090 excels with 4x Frame Generation enabled and DLSS set to “Performance” mode. In this setup, the GPU runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K/ultra settings with maximum ray tracing, achieving an impressive 290 FPS, although it experiences a latency of 35 to 40+ milliseconds.

    Frame Generation Effects

    When switching to DLSS “Quality,” the average FPS drops to around 200, along with a small latency increase. Interestingly, adjusting the Frame Generation from 2x to 4x or back again does not significantly impact latency as one might have thought. The testing by PC Centric shows a stark contrast in FPS averages with and without Frame Generation. While the RTX 5090 reaches 200 FPS with DLSS “Quality” and 4x Frame Generation, it only achieves about 65 FPS when Frame Generation is disabled. For comparison, zWORMz Gaming on YouTube reports that the RTX 4090 gets roughly 40-47 FPS under similar conditions.

    Need for DLSS in Heavy Games

    Ultimately, when both DLSS and Frame Generation are turned off, the RTX 5090 struggles to handle Cyberpunk 2077 with full Path Tracing at 4K/ultra settings, as its FPS falls below 30. To summarize, if you plan to play Cyberpunk 2077 at maximum graphics settings, you will need DLSS for smooth gameplay. The RTX 5090 comes at a hefty price of $2,000, so if you’re aiming for a high refresh rate experience, Nvidia’s new Multi Frame Generation feature will be very helpful.

    Sony has not confirmed if there will be any job cuts but stated that it has no plans to close down the studios. They mentioned they are “working closely with Bend and Bluepoint to determine what are the next projects.” The company aims to “ensure there is minimal business impact.”

    Changes in Live-Service Game Plans

    In 2023, Sony revealed it was developing at least twelve live-service games (via The Verge) based on its well-known franchises. However, by the end of that same year, Video Games Chronicle reported that this number had been reduced to six.

    Starting off 2024, Sony achieved a successful launch with Helldivers 2. Although the game faced various controversies, it effectively resolved them and sold over 12 million copies. Although the Switch 2 has been announced, Nintendo plans to keep fans waiting until April for a complete unveiling of the console. There’s still uncertainty regarding its price, shipping dates, and launch titles.

    Sales Expectations

    Despite the uncertainty, Bloomberg has reported that Nintendo is expecting the Switch 2 to become its best-selling console in the first year. To put things in perspective, Nintendo had aimed to sell 10.5 million Wii U consoles during its first year, which was a significant decline of 43% compared to the Wii’s sales in fiscal year 2008.

    A Cautious Approach

    Following the Wii U’s commercial struggles, Nintendo took a conservative stance on how many Switch consoles they would sell in the initial month, which coincidentally marked the end of their fiscal year. Surprisingly, the Switch exceeded expectations by about 760,000 units, eventually shipping 15 million units by 2018, with sales peaking at over 28 million in fiscal year 2021.

    Ambitious Targets

    In contrast, Nintendo seems to be gearing up for Switch 2 sales to surpass 20 million units in its first year. It’s important to note that this projection comes from Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Robin Zhu via Bloomberg, not directly from Nintendo.

    Should the Switch 2 reach these sales figures, it would outshine not only the Wii and original Switch in their first years but also eclipse the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Nevertheless, Zhu emphasizes that Nintendo has already adjusted its supply chain to prepare for a significant surge in Switch 2 sales throughout 2025 and into early 2026.

    The MSI Claw stands out as a unique entry in the premium gaming handheld market. It first launched as a 7-inch device, heavily inspired by the Asus ROG Ally (currently priced at $399.99 – refurbished on Amazon). However, instead of using AMD’s reliable Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000, or Ryzen Z1 platforms, MSI chose to implement Intel’s Core Ultra 5 135H and Core Ultra 7 155H processors.

    Performance Issues

    Intel’s Meteor Lake architecture led to underwhelming GPU performance and power efficiency, which hindered the Claw 7 AV1M’s success. After receiving a slew of negative reviews, MSI quickly introduced the Claw 8 AI+, featuring the newer Intel Lunar Lake processors, and hinted at an updated 7-inch model based on the same technology.

    Specifications Update

    MSI officially markets the Claw 7 AI+ AV2M and Claw 8 AI+ AV2M with the Core Ultra 7 258V exclusively. Consequently, both models come equipped with 32 GB of RAM and Intel’s relatively powerful Arc 140V integrated GPU. An intriguing post on Reddit mentioned that MSI might have had extra plans for the Claw refresh that were potentially scrapped at the last moment.

    Prototype Discovery

    Interestingly, a Reddit user named u/sozuoka claimed to have discovered a ‘Claw 8 prototype’ that features Intel’s Core Ultra 5 228V. This option is less common and includes 32 GB of RAM but has lower CPU clock speeds and a third less L3 cache compared to the Core Ultra 7 258V. While the two processors share the same CPU cores, the Core Ultra 5 228V comes with a somewhat weaker Arc 130V integrated GPU compared to the Core Ultra 7 258V.

    Reports suggest that the Core Ultra 5 228V may outperform the Core Ultra 7 155H by approximately 20%, even in its prototype form. The prototype is said to be fully functional, raising questions about its absence from retail markets as a more affordable alternative. It’s possible that the performance difference between the Arc 130V and Arc 140V was too minimal to warrant two separate product launches. The high price of the Claw 8 AI+ AV2M in both the UK and the US certainly leaves room for a lower-cost model to be introduced.
