Sonos Announces Layoffs of 200 Employees During Restructuring

Founded in 2002, Sonos employed over 1,700 people by the year 2024. Unfortunately, the past few years have been filled with numerous challenges due to the global economic downturn, alongside various controversies related to software and product support. As a result, the company is reorganizing its Product division into distinct teams focusing on hardware, software, design, quality, and operations. Regrettably, this restructuring will also lead to job cuts.

    Job Cuts and Severance Packages

In a public letter from interim CEO Thomas Conrad, it was noted that “about 200 positions” will be eliminated, with impacted employees receiving a severance package that reflects their time with Sonos. Moreover, their RSUs will keep vesting until the vest date on February 15, and those on the quarterly bonus scheme will get a Q1 bonus if it is achieved. US workers facing layoffs will maintain their healthcare coverage throughout the severance period.

    Improving Project Prioritization

According to the letter, Sonos is striving to enhance project prioritization. Thomas Conrad feels that the company’s recent tendency to commit to too many projects requires adjustment. Meanwhile, for those keen on Sonos products, they can check out Amazon to snag the Era 100 Alexa-enabled smart speaker at $199, reduced from its original price of $249 due to a limited-time 20% discount. This speaker comes in both black and white, with both options currently on sale.

Audio-Technica Launches AT-LP5X Turntable in India for Audiophiles

Audio-Technica has introduced the AT-LP5X direct-drive turntable in India, refreshing the original AT-LP5 model. While it keeps the classic aesthetic, it includes several new features such as a direct-drive motor with three speed settings (33-1/3, 45, and 78 RPM), a built-in MM/MC phono pre-amp, and USB connectivity for easy digitizing of vinyl records.

Note that to use the 78 RPM setting, you’ll need the AT-VM95SP stylus, which is sold separately. The turntable comes equipped with the AT-VM95E Dual Moving Magnet stereo cartridge, which is already mounted on an AT-HS6 headshell, making it easy to upgrade styluses within the VM95 range.

    Design and Performance

It features a metal gimbal suspension system that promotes accurate tracking. The adjustable dynamic anti-skate control improves playback quality, and the precision-machined aluminum platter reduces vibrations, resulting in clearer audio.

A built-in switchable Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) phono/line pre-amplifier means you can connect it directly to your home stereo systems, powered speakers, and computers without the need for an external phono stage. The USB output makes it simple to digitize vinyl records, and it comes with a PC connection cable and Audacity software.

    Pricing and Availability

The AT-LP5X is available at a price of ₹66,340 (MRP) and ₹65,990 (MOP) in India. You can find it online on Amazon and through the distribution network of Audio-Technica.

    Advanced Technology

  • Future Galaxy Buds with UWB: Enhanced Location Tracking & Audio

Future Galaxy Buds with UWB: Enhanced Location Tracking & Audio

Samsung is looking into adding UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology to its earbuds, as shown by a patent application it filed in November 2023.

    What is UWB?

Ultra-Wideband is a short-range wireless communication technology that functions at very high frequencies, ranging from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. This tech allows for accurate location tracking and fast data transfer over brief distances while using minimal power. Unlike Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, UWB can pinpoint objects with centimeter-level accuracy.

    Benefits for Future Galaxy Buds

The Galaxy S and Z series smartphones already feature this technology, which could improve the location tracking of the upcoming Galaxy Buds when paired with those devices.

Pre-order Samsung Galaxy phones now & get up to $1,250 off + a chance to win $5,000 credit (US only) – https://howl.link/erlejlgnge89i

    Enhanced Audio Quality

UWB offers greater bandwidth than Bluetooth, potentially leading to better audio transmission. Sammobile thinks this could result in higher-fidelity sound in the Galaxy Buds. The patent mentions a new way of connecting the earbuds to the phone using both Bluetooth and UWB. However, the phone or any device must also support UWB, which could make it a premium feature initially available to a limited audience.

    Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro

What makes this development intriguing is the chance that other brands might adopt this technology and create a seamless connection within their ecosystems. Eventually, most devices from different brands could include UWB, allowing them to work together much like Bluetooth does today.

    Patent Application Insights

The patent abstract states: “A method for controlling a set of wireless earphones, including: establishing a first Bluetooth (BT) connection between a first earphone of the set of wireless earphones and a source apparatus; based on the source apparatus supporting Ultra Wide Band (UWB) connections: establishing a first UWB connection between the first earphone and the source apparatus, and a second UWB connection between a second earphone of the set of wireless earphones and the source apparatus; and receiving, by the first earphone, audio data from the source apparatus using the first UWB connection, wherein the audio data is received from the source apparatus by the second earphone using the second UWB connection.”
