  • Radeon RX 9070, RX 9070 XT Review Date Leak: AMD vs RTX 50 Series

Radeon RX 9070, RX 9070 XT Review Date Leak: AMD vs RTX 50 Series

AMD caught many off guard by not showcasing the upcoming RDNA 4 desktop GPUs during CES 2025. Enthusiasts are now left guessing about the specifications, performance, and pricing of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. Fortunately, it seems that the complete announcement for RDNA 4 is nearing, and we won’t have to wait long to see these graphics cards perform.

    Upcoming Announcement

A source from Moore’s Law Is Dead claims to have been contacted by AMD about the full reveal of the RX 9070 and 9070 XT, which is supposedly set for “on or around January 15th.” Furthermore, a rumor on Chiphell indicates that the review embargo for the RX 9070/XT is expected to lift on January 22. If this information is accurate, there would be a one-week gap between the official reveal and the reviews, leading to potential sales starting before the end of the month.

    Strategic Timing

It’s possible that AMD chose not to unveil the RX 9070 cards at CES 2025 to assess the RTX 50 series from Nvidia. With knowledge of Nvidia’s strategy, AMD could be planning to launch the RX 9070 XT just before Nvidia’s February release at a reportedly lower price, which could diminish Nvidia’s impact.

    Performance Expectations

Recent leaks suggest that the RX 9070’s performance is similar to that of the RX 7900 XT, while the RX 9070 XT is said to sit between the RTX 4080 Super and RX 7900 XTX. The anticipated price for the RX 9070 XT is between $479 and $550, positioning it as a potential price/performance leader, especially since AMD appears to have enhanced ray tracing capabilities as well.

On top of that, since the RX 9070 is expected to be cheaper than the RX 9070 XT, there’s a chance we could see an impressive sub-$500 GPU featuring 16 GB of RAM.

    Competitive Landscape

Regardless of the final specs, it’s evident that if the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT deliver the reported performance, Nvidia’s mid-range RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti are likely to face tough competition. This situation excites many, as a significant number of gamers tend to look for mid-range GPUs. Thus, intense competition between AMD and Nvidia in this area could lead to better options for gamers.

  • Tesla Model Y Juniper Price and Specs Confirmed for March Release

Tesla Model Y Juniper Price and Specs Confirmed for March Release

The Tesla Model Y Juniper refresh has finally been revealed this week, confirming the earlier speculations surrounding its release date. This marks the first significant update for Tesla’s best-selling vehicle.

    Pricing and Specifications

The Juniper refresh comes at a slightly higher price than the previous version, with minimal changes to charging speed and range. It features a more modern design compared to the aging Model Y. The starting price for the RWD Juniper refresh is set at $35,900, which is over 5% more than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the dual-motor AWD Model Y Juniper is priced at $41,400 in China, reflecting a similar increase.

The Model Y Juniper is slated for release in March across China and other Asia Pacific areas like Australia, and customers can place orders now. The US launch is anticipated to occur in Q1, contingent on regulatory approvals.

    Range and Efficiency

There were hopes that the Juniper refresh would include a larger battery, but that has not been the case. The revamped Model Y offers a range of 719 km (446 miles), which is a slight improvement over the previous model’s 688 km (427 miles). This modest gain of just 20 miles is attributed to better efficiency in the drivetrain rather than a new battery. Tesla claims the Model Y Juniper is designed for economical power use, emphasizing “using every kilowatt-hour more effectively.” However, it’s worth noting that this range figure comes from China’s generous CLTC cycle, which is typically at least a third higher than the US standard.

The EPA range for the dual-motor AWD Model Y Juniper in the US is likely to be around 311 miles, similar to the current model, possibly with a slight increase.

    Charging Capabilities

One area that may disappoint potential buyers is the charging speed. The Juniper refresh can charge at 250 kW, which is unchanged from the previous iteration. The RWD model, with an LFP battery, charges even slower at a peak of 170 kW. It remains uncertain if these charging rates will apply to the US models, especially since Tesla is introducing V4 Superchargers capable of charging at up to 500 kW, suggesting that the powertrain could differ from the Chinese version.

The Juniper refresh’s exterior has been redesigned for a more aggressive look, featuring a lower drag coefficient. There is a rear light bar described as “an integrated diffuse reflection through-type taillight.” The front light strip, reminiscent of the Cybertruck’s, is now a continuous feature alongside the updated headlights.

    Enhanced Features

As anticipated, the Model Y Juniper includes upgraded suspension, wheels, and tires, aiming for a “smoother, quieter ride.” The 19-inch and 20-inch wheel options come with improved handling and grip. A die-cast rear underbody simplifies the design by reducing the number of parts from 70 to just one, enhancing overall structural integrity and ride quality.

The facelift also introduces vented seats and ambient lighting, features that were previously seen in the Model 3 Highland refresh. Interestingly, the Juniper refresh features an indicator stalk by the steering wheel, moving away from the stalkless design, although it’s unclear if this will be available in the US. Tesla explains that this new indicator stalk is crafted for effortless control, incorporating feedback from users.

    Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside, the Model Y Juniper boasts a 15.4-inch central display with improved resolution and pixel density, along with an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers. For added convenience, the rear bench seats can fold electrically, providing a trunk space of over 2,130 liters. The rear trunk door unlocks and lifts automatically, simplifying the process of loading heavy items.

Additionally, the Model Y Juniper is equipped with Tesla’s latest Hardware 4.0 cameras and autonomous driving computer. This setup includes a front bumper camera similar to that of the Cybertruck, which enhances the vehicle’s field of view for advanced driver assistance features.

As a bonus, the Model Y Juniper refresh will launch alongside the latest FSD v13 update for the first lucky buyers in the US.

However, it’s important to note that by the time the Model Y Juniper arrives in March, it may no longer qualify for the federal EV tax credit, which is reportedly under review by the current administration, along with other electric vehicle incentives.

  • BYD Challenges Tesla Roadster 2 with High-Speed Supercar Jump

BYD Challenges Tesla Roadster 2 with High-Speed Supercar Jump

As a way to ease the concerns of early Roadster 2 fans who have been waiting for their orders for years, Elon Musk hinted that Tesla’s next-generation supercar will be launched in 2025.

    Exciting Developments for Tesla

When BYD introduced its first electric hypercar about a year ago, Musk quickly pointed out that the Tesla Roadster 2 would undergo a major redesign, developed in partnership with SpaceX. This new model is expected to feature an astonishing sub-second acceleration, transforming it into what Musk described as an “exciting flying machine with the SpaceX package.”

    SpaceX Technology Integration

This package could likely include cold air thrusters, as noted by the CEO of Rimac, an electric hypercar brand, with Musk confirming this idea back in 2019. “Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra-high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats,” Musk had stated previously, which is considered a crucial element for the Roadster 2 to achieve its sub-second speed.

    Challenges and Delays

Then, delays in the Cybertruck production arose, along with the urgent demand for more affordable vehicles like the Model 2 and Cybercab, pushing the Roadster 2 project down the priority list. Musk even promised a “mind-blowing demo” for the previous year, which never happened. Fans are hopeful that the “flying” Roadster will finally make its appearance in 2025.

    BYD’s Advancements

In contrast, BYD is already on the market with a 1300 HP hypercar that can actually take to the air, albeit briefly. Recently, the largest EV manufacturer showcased the active suspension system of the Yangwang U9, demonstrating its capability by jumping over a pothole with a 20-foot leap.

    Advanced Suspension Features

The active suspension system from BYD comprises three unique sections – DiSus-C, DiSus-A, and DiSus-P – which manage variable damping, air suspension, and hydraulic functions, respectively. When working together, these systems can individually modify each wheel’s height, allowing the car to perform vertical jumps when necessary—just don’t mention this feature to law enforcement during a chase.

    Conclusion

A remarkable jump to avoid a pothole can be seen in the video below, and it will be intriguing to see how Elon Musk reacts to this flying hypercar demonstration.

  • Nitecore EDC31: Compact 3.5 oz Flashlight with USB-C Charging

Nitecore EDC31: Compact 3.5 oz Flashlight with USB-C Charging

Nitecore has unveiled its latest flashlight, the EDC31. Weighing in at just 100 grams or 3.5 oz, it stands as the lightest option in the EDC series to date. When compared to the EDC33, it is approximately 2.5 oz lighter. The EDC23 Saber is a bit heavier at 3.6 oz but has a different design.

    Classic Shape and Bright Modes

The EDC31 features a traditional flashlight design. Like other models in the EDC3x series, it presents two powerful modes for temporary use. The first is a 3,500-lumen floodlight mode called “Lumin Shield,” and the second is a spotlight mode providing 1,500 lumens. Activating the spotlight requires a half-press of the button, while the floodlight mode needs a full press.

    Practicality in Low Battery

These modes are beneficial as they remain usable even when the battery is running low. This trait sets Nitecore’s flashlight apart from its rivals, including the already available EDC33/35. As seen in past models, we expect the flashlight to heat up considerably, even if it doesn’t shine as brightly as other lamps. However, its form factor is much more compact.

    Battery Life Specs

The manufacturer only provides details about battery life for its standard continuous light modes. On the “high” setting of 1,100 lumens, a full charge can last up to four hours. Battery life improves with lower settings: at 300 lumens, it lasts 5 hours; at 70 lumens, it goes for 24 hours; and at a mere 5 lumens, it can reach an impressive 57 hours.

    Limitations of the EDC31

In spotlight mode, the regular modes also display a focused beam, with the extra LEDs for the floodlight mode turned off in that setting. Unfortunately, the EDC31 has a well-known drawback found in Nitecore’s EDC series: the battery is not replaceable. Although it uses a standard 18650 battery, Nitecore hasn’t specified the voltage, complicating the ability to gauge its capacity. Our estimation puts it at around 13.7 to 14 Wh, roughly 3,800 mAh. Nitecore does offer batteries with 4,000 mAh at 3.6 volts, which translates to about 14.4 Wh.

    Charging and Durability

The Nitecore flashlight includes a USB-C charging port, which is protected by a cover. However, the EDC31 lacks the rotating mechanism found in the EDC33 and EDC35 models. It does, however, have a lockout switch to prevent unintentional activation while in a backpack, for instance. True to its nature, the EDC31 is quite sturdy and can endure brief submersion in up to 6.5 ft of water.

    Pricing Expectations

As is typical for Nitecore, the MSRP for the EDC31 has yet to be announced. The previously reviewed Nitecore EDC33, which was compared to the EDC35, carries a price tag of $69.95. Thus, it’s likely that the new Nitecore EDC31 will be priced slightly lower.
