  • Steam Deck Unofficial Lossless Scaling Plugin Promises 3x FPS Boost

Steam Deck Unofficial Lossless Scaling Plugin Promises 3x FPS Boost

    Key Takeaways

    1. A new plug-in for the Steam Deck enables real-time frame generation, potentially doubling or tripling frame rates in various games, including significant improvements in titles like Elden Ring and Shadow of the Colossus.

    2. The plug-in is based on LSFG-VK, a Linux compatibility layer, but its creator, PancakeTAS, has distanced themselves from the Decky version, highlighting concerns about visual glitches and default settings.

    3. User reactions are mixed; while many praise the plug-in for its performance and ease of use, some report issues like input lag and amplified frame drops.

    4. The plug-in supports multiple graphics APIs (DirectX and Vulkan) and does not require changes to game files, making it accessible for users willing to purchase the Lossless Scaling app.

    5. The community has a history of friction over open-source collaborations, raising questions about proper acknowledgment and sharing practices within the gaming development space.

A recent plug-in created by the community is said to be enabling real-time frame generation on the Steam Deck, causing some quiet debates in the gaming community. This plug-in, made for Decky Loader, adds Lossless Scaling Frame Generation (LSFG) directly into the SteamOS Gaming Mode. This means players could possibly double or even triple their frame rates in a wide range of games, from modern AAA releases to emulating PS2 classics. Early tests show that Elden Ring can jump from 30–40 FPS to about 80–90 FPS, while Shadow of the Colossus, when emulated, seems to exceed 100 FPS.

    Development Background

This plug-in is built on LSFG-VK, a Linux compatibility layer created by PancakeTAS, who has since distanced themselves from the Decky version. In a message on Discord, they mentioned, “I was not involved in this Decky plugin… Please don’t judge LSFG‑VK based on this.” They criticized the standard 30% flow scale for leading to visual glitches and pointed out that performance mode is turned off by default, which they believe isn’t ideal for the Steam Deck’s hardware.

    User Reactions

Despite these concerns, excitement is buzzing on Reddit, although many users are cautious about potential issues. One user, TheBLKMN, praised the plug-in’s straightforwardness and its performance, stating: “10/10, it just works. Don’t notice much visually, there is some slight lag felt, but that’s to be expected… Make the harder to run games look smoother, which is all I wanted!” Another user, soft‑tack, called LSFG “freaking amazing,” referring to it as “magic launch commands” that allow the Deck to achieve a DLSS-level of smoothness.

    A Word of Caution

Nonetheless, some users have voiced concerns about its drawbacks. Fast_Trigger commented: “Input lag and artefacts are what killed it for me.” Similarly, Snowmobile2004 pointed out, “Lossless scaling can’t remove frame drops; if anything, it’ll amplify existing ones 2×.”

Even with these critiques, the plug-in seems to be popular due to its ease of usage. It supports DirectX 9–12, Vulkan, and OpenGL, works with non-Steam games, and requires no changes to game files. To get started, users only need to purchase the Lossless Scaling app from Steam ($6.99), install the plug-in via Decky Loader, and set launch options for each game.

    Community Dynamics

This situation isn’t the first instance of open-source collaborations causing friction. The community has faced similar issues before, such as Proton-GE being repackaged without acknowledgment, or GOverlay overlapping with MangoHUD without proper syncing. The ongoing question remains: when does sharing cross into the territory of stepping on others’ toes?

Members of r/SteamDeck and the Decky Loader Discord recommend adjusting a few settings, like setting Flow Scale to 85–100%, turning on Performance Mode, and using a 2× FPS multiplier to find the right mix of responsiveness and visual clarity. For a detailed guide, check out the walkthrough video below—it’s definitely worth watching.

  • Donkey Kong Bananza Devs Discuss Switch 2 Specs & Game Screenshot

Donkey Kong Bananza Devs Discuss Switch 2 Specs & Game Screenshot

    Key Takeaways

    1. Development Shift: Donkey Kong Bananza started on the original Switch, but development shifted to the new Switch 2 in 2021.
    2. Enhanced Visuals: The Switch 2 allows for improved graphics, enabling more objects in the environment and enhanced interaction, including destructible elements.
    3. Voxel Graphics: The game uses voxel technology for graphics, which requires the increased memory capacity of the Switch 2 to manage complex objects effectively.
    4. Performance Goals: The new console aims for 60fps, supported by its powerful Nvidia chip, despite potential frame rate drops noted by the team.
    5. Release Date: Donkey Kong Bananza is set to be released on July 17th, with players set to evaluate its overall performance upon launch.

Recently, it was revealed to gamers that the creation of Donkey Kong Bananza started on the original Switch. A new interview from Nintendo titled “Ask the Developer” indicates that the shift to the new console began in 2021. Kenta Motokura, Daisuke Watanabe, and Wataru Tanaka also explained how the specs of the Switch 2 enhance the 3D platforming experience.

    Screenshots and Visuals

With the release date of Donkey Kong Bananza set for July 17th, the team has shared the first screenshot showing what the game will look like on the Switch. The small comparison images make it hard to see differences in visual quality. However, many improvements become evident when players interact with the game world.

Art Director Watanabe stated, “One of the most noticeable enhancements was that we could add many more objects in the environment than we could before.” A key attraction of the Switch 2 version is the ability for players to destroy nearly everything around and beneath Donkey Kong.

    Technical Details

The graphics in Donkey Kong Bananza utilize voxels, which are like 3D pixels. As objects grow in size and complexity, they can quickly drain a console’s resources. Only the improved specs of the Switch 2, which feature extra memory capacity, make it possible for these objects to be destroyed in a believable way.

In the interview, Game Director Tanaka highlighted that the processing power of the new handheld was also crucial. There’s no proof that the Switch 2 game employs DLSS, but the Nvidia chip in the system has shown to be capable. This allows developers to aim for 60fps even with intricate maps and realistic explosions.

    Performance Considerations

Although the team has praised the Switch 2, Kazuya Takahashi earlier acknowledged some frame rate drops. He assures, however, that the retail version will provide a smooth gaming experience overall. Players will ultimately assess how serious these performance issues are following the release of Donkey Kong Bananza.

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Tops Honor Magic V5, Oppo Find N5, Vivo X Fold5

    Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Tops Honor Magic V5, Oppo Find N5, Vivo X Fold5

    Key Takeaways

    1. Smartphone makers are in a fierce competition to produce slimmer and lighter foldable devices, with brands like Samsung, Honor, and Vivo emphasizing these features in their marketing.

    2. Recent models like the Galaxy Z Fold6, Magic V3, and X Fold3 Pro are lighter than previous versions, but companies have adjusted weight claims, leading to discrepancies between stated and actual weights.

    3. Manufacturers do not include the weight of inner screen protectors in their official weight figures, which can contribute to the differences observed in independent tests.

    4. Google’s Pixel Fold is noted for accounting for the weight of the inner screen protector, while other brands, including Samsung, show minor discrepancies in their weight claims.

    5. The Galaxy Z Fold7 currently leads in actual weight among foldables, priced at $1,999, while variations in weight exist among other models like the Magic V5 and Find N5.

Smartphone makers have been in a competition to create foldable smartphones that are thinner and lighter for several years now. Companies like Samsung, Honor, and Vivo highlight in their marketing that their latest foldables are the slimmest or lightest in their class, showing just how important these features are to them.

    Weight Claims and Reality

All the latest models, including the Galaxy Z Fold, Magic V, and X Fold, are lighter than their predecessors. However, it seems that Samsung, Honor, and Vivo have adjusted their weight figures in the past to make their official claims look better. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold6 is listed at 239 g, but independent tests reveal it actually weighs 244 g, which is 5 g more. The Magic V3, X Fold3 Pro, and the Find N5 also tend to be a bit heavier than what the manufacturers state.

    Transparency in Weight Measurements

None of these companies are misleading about the weights of their foldable devices. They simply do not include the weight of the inner screen protectors in their official numbers, similar to what is done with regular smartphones. It’s important to note that all manufacturers of foldables caution users against removing the inner screen protectors, as doing so can lead to damage of the displays.

Interestingly, only Google has considered the weight of the inner screen protector with its Pixel Fold. According to data from Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold7 does not meet Samsung’s stated weight of 215 g, falling short by just 3 g. This is better than the discrepancies seen with the Find N5, Magic V5, or X Fold5.

    Comparative Weights

Ice Universe also indicates that the lightest version of the Magic V5 actually weighs 224 g when everything is taken into account. On the other hand, the white models of the Find N5 and X Fold5 are both at 236 g. Notably, the Titanium version of the X Fold5 drops to about 226 g due to using a fiber glass back instead of a full glass one. Nevertheless, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is still leading the pack in terms of actual weight, priced at $1,999 on Amazon, making it the standout in this category of foldable smartphones.
