A Shifting Flagship Landscape

Inflation, supply chain disruptions, and a volatile memory market have collectively driven the cost of premium smartphones to unprecedented heights in recent years. Vivo’s own X300 Ultra now carries an official price tag approaching US$2,000, though some online retailers have already begun listing it below that threshold. Against this backdrop, the arrival of the Vivo X300 FE—frequently available for well under US$1,000—marks a striking shift in what consumers can expect for their money.

Where the Savings Become Visible

A price point that once sat just beneath true flagship territory now represents less than half the cost of a top-tier device. The compromises required to reach that figure are remarkably modest. The X300 FE is equipped with a USB 2.0 port, meaning wired data transfers are slow and video output to an external monitor is unsupported. However, its robust set of wireless connectivity options makes these limitations easy to circumvent in daily use.

Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 system-on-chip delivers slightly less raw power than the silicon found in absolute top-end competitors. In practice, the performance gap is perceptible only under extremely demanding workloads. The phone otherwise presents a premium glass-and-metal construction with a reassuringly rigid feel, backed by IP68 and IP69 certifications for comprehensive dust and water resistance.

Unexpected Camera Strength and Lingering Weaknesses

The imaging system, developed in partnership with Zeiss, delivers surprisingly capable results that hold their own against cameras on significantly more expensive handsets. The overall package is not without flaws, however. Under sustained heavy load, the device exhibits noticeable overheating, and the built-in speakers lack substantial volume.

A Self-Cannibalizing Proposition

With its compact 6.3-inch display, the X300 FE poses an intriguing strategic dilemma for Vivo. It raises an uncomfortable question: why would a buyer spend twice as much on the X300 Ultra when this device delivers a comparably high-quality experience with so few meaningful trade-offs? A genuine need for a much larger screen or specialized capabilities like multifocal video recording remains a valid reason to choose the flagship. For nearly everyone else, the X300 FE closes the gap so effectively that it risks overshadowing its pricier sibling entirely.
