Shanling has introduced a new flagship portable CD player designed for listeners who demand both physical media playback and high-resolution audio performance. The EC Zero T Max builds directly on the architecture of the existing EC Zero T but adds substantially more amplifier headroom to drive a wider range of demanding headphones.
Dual-Mode Amplification and Converted Power
At the core of the update is a 24-bit R2R DAC paired with a redesigned output stage that supports both transistor and vacuum tube operating modes. Through its 4.4 mm balanced connection, the transistor mode delivers up to 1,300 mW into a 32-ohm load, while the tube circuit provides as much as 1,162 mW at the same impedance. Shanling says the revised design also expands the soundstage and lifts overall transparency compared with the earlier model, allowing the player to comfortably drive power-hungry planar magnetic designs such as the Audeze LCD-5.

The EC Zero T Max covers a frequency range of 20 Hz to 40 kHz (-0.5 dB) when playing digital files, narrowing to a standard 20 Hz to 20 kHz for CD playback. Signal-to-noise ratio is rated at 117 dB, and total harmonic distortion plus noise is specified at 0.02% in transistor mode and 1% when using the tube circuit. A 5,500 mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 7.5 hours of playback via balanced headphones, 8 hours through an unbalanced output, and as much as 20 hours when streaming over Bluetooth using aptX Adaptive, aptX, or SBC codecs. For home integration, the unit offers digital and analog line outputs and can be powered continuously from a 5V, 2A USB-C supply.
Stabilized Playback and Physical Design
A magnetic disc clamp and an electronic stabilization system are designed to maintain smooth playback in any orientation, including while the listener is walking, while also reducing mechanical noise and vibration. Users can archive CD tracks directly to a USB flash drive as uncompressed WAV files. The chassis combines a metal body with a tempered-glass lid, measures 158 x 150 x 28 mm (6.2 x 5.9 x 1.1 inches), and weighs 669 grams (1.47 lbs). Physical controls include a dedicated volume slider alongside traditional push buttons.
