Samsung is reportedly preparing to commercialize its long-rumored rollable smartphone, and a fresh report suggests the device has now been assigned a clearer launch window.
A 2028 debut for the rollable form factor
A Korean publication, citing a Samsung Electronics official, reports that the company is developing a rollable phone with a launch timeline set for the first half of 2028. The device will use a panel produced by Samsung Display, enabling the group to stake an early claim in a category that has so far remained experimental. Samsung Display has already begun supply discussions with Samsung Electronics regarding the rollable panels.
First specifications and branding surface
According to the report, the handset will be marketed as the Galaxy Z Slide, indicating it will join the existing foldable lineup rather than launching an entirely new series. Research firm Omdia is cited as anticipating a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 440.6 ppi. The same forecast points to a successor arriving as soon as 2030, suggesting Samsung views this form factor as a multi-generation bet.
Packaging a 10-inch screen in a retractable body raises significant engineering questions. By comparison, Samsung’s bi-fold Galaxy Z Fold series currently tops out around 8 inches, while only the Huawei Mate XT tri-fold has crossed the 10-inch mark with a 10.2-inch panel. Recent Samsung patents have explored placing the camera module on the extending side, an arrangement that could free up internal space for the rolled display mechanism and help preserve a manageable in-hand feel.
Patents and practical hurdles
Samsung has filed multiple patents for rollable-screen devices over the years, but none have yet reached store shelves. One newly uncovered design shows a smartphone with a rollable display and a camera module positioned on the sliding edge. Whether the Galaxy Z Slide adopts this exact layout or a different configuration remains unconfirmed, though the concept reinforces the technical work already under way to balance screen size with portability.
