Samsung’s next-generation smartwatch lineup is expected to break cover soon, with industry rumors pointing to a launch on Wednesday, July 22. The event is anticipated to introduce successors to both the Galaxy Watch8, currently priced at $304, and the premium Galaxy Watch Ultra. While design refinements are likely, the most notable upgrade may lie inside the devices: a new chipset reportedly dubbed the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite.

Under the hood: a faster core configuration

The Snapdragon Wear Elite is said to employ a hybrid CPU architecture similar to the Exynos W1000, combining one ARM Cortex-A78 performance core with four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. The key difference, however, is clock speed: Qualcomm’s new platform is rumored to push frequencies up to 2.1 GHz. That raw uplift is paired with a graphics processor Qualcomm claims is seven times faster than the one found in the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, alongside an integrated Hexagon AI accelerator. Quick charging could also see a significant leap, with the chip reportedly enabling a 0 to 50 percent charge in just 10 minutes.

Early benchmarks and a dose of caution

An initial Geekbench listing offers an early glimpse of the performance on tap. According to the entry, the Snapdragon Wear Elite delivers up to 56 percent better CPU performance and nearly 47 percent higher GPU performance compared to the Exynos W1000. These figures position the chip as a clear step forward in the smartwatch segment, though standard caveats apply: pre-launch benchmark leaks rarely tell the whole story of real-world responsiveness or efficiency.

Keeping expectations grounded

Despite the impressive generational gains, the Galaxy Watch9 series will naturally remain in a different performance class than modern smartphones. As a point of reference, even Qualcomm’s entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 mobile platform from 2023 achieves roughly double the multi-threaded performance, underscoring the thermal and power constraints inherent to wearable devices. Still, for users upgrading from older smartwatch models, the Snapdragon Wear Elite could represent one of the most meaningful speed and efficiency jumps in recent Samsung wearables.
