Samsung has officially extended the software support window for its newly announced Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2, positioning the wearables ahead of key rivals in long-term update commitments.

Extended OS and Security Support Confirmed

Unveiled on Wednesday, the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 bring notable hardware upgrades, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, larger batteries, and new AI-driven features. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 further distinguishes itself with a 5,000-nit display and formal certification as a diving watch. Beyond these hardware advances, Samsung confirmed to Sammobile that both models will now receive five major Wear OS updates, up from the four OS updates promised for the previous generation Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. Security patches will remain on offer for five years, consistent with prior policy. This trajectory suggests the new watches will see updates through Wear OS 12 and receive security maintenance until 2031.

With this extension, Samsung widens its advantage in software longevity over Apple and Google. Google’s Pixel Watch 4, for comparison, receives operating system and security updates for three years. Apple’s recent shift in approach also reshapes the competitive landscape; the introduction of watchOS 27 saw the company shorten update support for select Apple Watch models to only three years. Moreover, Apple typically does not outline the support lifespan of its devices in advance, making it difficult to gauge how long current models such as the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 will continue receiving full software upgrades. By contrast, Samsung’s explicit five-year OS update guarantee provides greater clarity for consumers evaluating long-term value.
