Samsung’s software-based Privacy Display, introduced with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, has drawn some criticism over perceived compromises in screen clarity, yet the feature has quickly gained traction in global markets. That momentum is now driving a broader wave of development across the smartphone industry.

Samsung’s privacy screen technology gains global traction

The feature works by using a specialized panel that enables users to narrow the viewing angle on demand. When activated through a settings toggle, the screen remains fully legible only to the person directly in front of it, while onlookers from the side see either a black image or a heavily dimmed display, depending on the chosen intensity. Despite mixed feedback on overall display quality, the reception has been strong enough to capture the attention of major Chinese manufacturers.

Expanding to the full Galaxy S27 lineup

A new report out of South Korea, citing industry sources, indicates Samsung plans to equip every model in the 2027 Galaxy S27 series with Flex Magic Pixel AMOLED panels. These panels form the hardware foundation that makes the software-driven Privacy Display possible, allowing the viewing angle to be restricted electronically without a physical screen protector. The expansion across the entire S27 range signals Samsung’s confidence in the feature as a differentiating selling point.

Rival approaches from Huawei and Xiaomi

According to the same report, Chinese brands are forging their own paths rather than simply replicating Samsung’s implementation. Huawei is said to be developing a hardware-based alternative that follows a different technical route than Samsung’s technology. Xiaomi, meanwhile, is reportedly working on a purely software-level method, designed to integrate directly with the operating system to achieve a comparable privacy effect without relying on a custom panel.

Earlier leaks had already hinted at a privacy viewing mode being prepared for the Xiaomi 18 series, a flagship line expected to launch alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 toward the end of September. As the competitive landscape shifts, privacy-centric display features are shaping up to become a standard battleground in premium smartphones over the next two years.
