A minimalist Android handset built in Germany with a strong emphasis on data protection has finally begun shipping. The Punkt. MC03, first unveiled in January, now comes with a significant change to its launch terms: the originally mandated subscription requirement has been eliminated entirely, giving users unrestricted access to every feature at no extra lifetime cost.

Revised Market Approach and Physical Design

At first glance, the MC03 could pass for a conventional mid-range device, featuring a flat bezel, punch-hole front camera, and a square rear camera housing. It is, however, noticeably substantial, measuring 11 millimeters thick and weighing 240 grams. The chassis carries an IP68 certification for full water and dust resistance. Repairability is a stated design goal, with straightforward access to the 5,200 mAh battery, which supports 30-watt USB-C wired charging and 15-watt wireless charging. Spare parts availability remains more limited than on industry leaders like the Fairphone 6.

Privacy-Centric Software Architecture

The smartphone’s software foundation anchors its market distinction. It runs AphyOS, a Swiss-developed operating system built on the privacy-hardened GrapheneOS base. The system guards against tracking and unauthorized data access by confining every third-party application within a dedicated “privacy bubble.” A minimalist home screen interface minimizes visual noise, while a built-in VPN service offers network-level protection. The manufacturer commits to three years of feature updates and five years of security patches for the platform.

Core Hardware and Component Sourcing

While final assembly takes place in Germany, the internal components follow common global supply chains. Processing is handled by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, supported by 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal flash storage, and a microSD slot for expansion. The front panel is a 6.67-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,436 x 1,080 pixels, a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 550 nits; an in-display fingerprint sensor provides biometric security. The camera array consists of a 32-megapixel selfie shooter on a 1/3-inch sensor, backed by a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2-megapixel macro unit.

Pricing and Availability

The Punkt. MC03 is available to order directly through the manufacturer’s online store for €745, with global shipping included. Pricing in the United States is set at $849. The AphyOS subscription is permanently included in the purchase price, reversing the earlier plan to charge a recurring fee for the device’s full functionality.
